6 - Lack of improvement gen-on-gen. Every manufacturer has coasted a bit throughout the pandemic, but ThinkPads haven't markedly improved in terms of weight, build quality, battery life, and even performance in the past 3-4 years (my frame of reference is a T480s from 2018 to P14s gen 2 in 2021). If 3 years yields little performance increase then why upgrade at all?.

Excellent CPU with keyboard.

Everything is snappy and fantastic, and the iGPU is a huge step up from Intel GPU territory, meaning it can do a whole lot more than just minecraft at 30fps. I have not tested many games yet but I suspect it will be fine for my light gaming needs. Thermals are also very fine, but I have not pushed it very far yet so we'll see. **Linux support:** Everything I've tested so far works under Linux except the IR camera and the microphone

T14 AMD (P14s AMD) mini-review

I’ll preface all this with the one negative thing that was an annoyance: they put the function key in the bottom left corner instead of the ctrl. This is still a 5 star review because there’s an option in the bios to switch their functionality and the rest of what I have to say is praise.  I had some specific requirements for a laptop and it met them all splendidly.

After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) where available and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. (We also turn Wi-Fi off, putting the laptop into airplane mode.) In this test, we loop a video&mdash;a locally stored 720p file of the Blender Foundation short film Tears of Steel(Opens in a new window)&mdash;with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system quits.

We also run a custom Adobe Photoshop image-editing benchmark. Using an early 2018 release of the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, we apply a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image. We time each operation and add up the total (lower times are better). The Photoshop test stresses the CPU, storage subsystem, and RAM, but it can also take advantage of most GPUs to speed up the process of applying filters

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Review

Disclaimer: this is an opinion piece, and I'm posting to encourage discussion and hopefully improvements from Lenovo in the coming years (assuming they ever listen to their customer feedback). I wrote this because of recent disappointments with my P14s gen 2 coming from a T480s.

**The Good**

1 - Experimentation: Lenovo is still experimenting with new form factors and making interesting, if flawed, devices like the X1 Fold and X1 Nano. These devices are unlikely to receive more than a few generations before being discontinued altogether - some of their features integrating into X-series and T-series laptops. They provide brand new experiences to market for a high premium, but I've never been bored by Lenovo's concept devices that they've brought to market

2 - Screens: selection has improved, and the quality for high end screens is fairly consistent (specially HDR, QHD, UHD, and 16:10 screens)

3 - Build Quality: on the highest-end machines this continues to be industry leading. The X1 Carbon, X-series, and T's series laptops continue to use magnesium shells, carbon fibre, and other premium feel materials. More on this later...

4 - Warranty support is still widely reported to be 'good'... although the "sealed battery warranty 3 years" is now a must-buy since replacement batteries are nearly impossible to find.

5 - Hardware Maintenance Manual and parts lookup - both are still excellent resources, especially for technicians and modders.

6 - Biometrics and security: Lenovo still offers TPM as standard across the ThinkPad line (as far as I know), most ThinkPads have the option for Windows IR cameras and Fingerprint readers with FiDo U2F (although I've never seen it properly implemented to work as a security key)


**The Bad**

1 - Build Quality and Design: The T-series and below have become a bastard forgotten middle child. The build quality on these machines continues a steady but noticeable decline, and the range hasn't really been refreshed since the T470 in 2017. Design-wise the laptops look dated, and not in the "Classic" sort of speaking. T-series and P-series laptops are also given the plastic-only treatment, while X-series and T's continue to enjoy magnesium, aluminium, and carbon fibre shells. Cost-wise there isn't a big leap, and the T-series and P-series used to be considered premium. Now they are barely a step above consumer laptops from the likes of Asus, HP, Dell, and Acer.

2 - Keyboards: I'm not going to rehash the debate on chiclet vs classic keyboards (although we all know which was better). While keyboards remain fairly consistent in terms of depth of key travel and build quality on the T-series, the X-series is getting shallower, flatter, and less comfortable. It seems inevitable that these changes will also make their way into the T-series, as is happening in the Ts-series. I almost put this in the UGLY column because the new keyboards are that bad.

3 - TrackPoints: Every few years Lenovo insists on making an ever-shallower TrackPoint which is not compatible with previous versions. There is also only 1 style of trackpoint now (patterned dome) whereas previously there was a textured 'cats tongue' dome and concave trackpoint (the best one in my opinion) People in the community have had to 3D print better concave trackpoint caps, or cut older trackpoint caps to size and use them with an adapter. This isn't even mentioning the move to ELAN TrackPoints from the superior and more sensitive Synaptics TrackPoints on some models

4 - TrackPads: The far-superior glass-surface trackpads are still an option reserved only for X-series and T's-series laptops (from CTO or BTO). Not even P-series laptops have glass trackpads, and the end users are left to their own devices to try to mod-in a better touchpad. The cost difference of these trackpads is ridiculously small. Glass trackpads cost around $30 whereas plastic trackpads cost about $25. The tracking quality and feel would make them a dead-easy sell as an upgrade at CTO order, but this still isn't the case.

5 - Too many products/variants. Lenovo continues to make slight variations of their T-series (optional NVidia Quadro graphics) and sell them as P-series. For instance, the P14s gen 2 and T14 non S gen 2 are the same laptop if configured without a dGPU, but are priced much differently. Confusingly, the T14s gen 2 is not the same as the P14s gen 2. It feels like you need a degree in Lenovo just to order the product you want, and not only go through the web pages but also the PSRef (which is google-able but not available on the product sales page). The PSRef and website information should be IDENTICAL.

8 - Webcams: still 720P in 2021. Still terrible colour reproduction. There are far better options out there at a similar parts cost.

9 - Batteries: the "sealed battery warranty 3 years" is now a must-buy since genuine replacement batteries are nearly impossible to find. The good news is that battery swaps are still much easier than on most other laptops, and involve a few screws and some prying rather than glue, pull tabs, etc. Battery life is also never as advertised, and hasn't markedly improved for me since the X220 in 2010.


**The Ugly**

1 - The gimping continues. Even though the current 2021 model stack all feature Intel 11th gen CPUs, which natively support PCIe 4.0 on-die, Lenovo continues to reserve this performance for only the X1 Carbon gen 9 and X1 Extreme gen 4. Other laptops, including 'high end' P-series and 'mid range' T-series, have gimped performance which is stuck on PCIe 3.0. This artificially limits the M.2 drive speed to 3500MB/s read max whereas PCIe 4.0 drives with 7000MB/s read have been available for just under 2 years. This practice dates back at least as far as the X61 in 2007 which had its SATA performance gimped to SATA 1.5Gb/s while the port was capable of SATA 3.0Gb/s and eventually patched in by modders.

2 - Screens: Lenovo "base model" LCD panels continue a despicable pattern of 6-bit highly inaccurate color reproduction, poor brightness, and low contrast. Sometimes these panels are sold just to have a screen in the machine, or to force an upsell to a decent panel. For new ThinkPadders, their expectations of receiving a quality machine are instantly dashed when they open up their brand new, high-spec ThinkPad with base model panel. Seasoned ThinkPadders know this, but no one should have to put up with this practice. Are these quality machines or not?

I hope Lenovo can resolve at least some of these issues in time for the big "30th Anniversary" celebration, but as someone who's owned ThinkPads for 20 years (I'm on my 9th personally) I doubt they will. While I would have given Lenovo an A-grade for the 2018 series of ThinkPad, overall I'm downgrading them to B-grade for their glaring deficiencies and anti-consumer practices as outlined above.

Seasoned ThinkPadders know this, but no one should have to put up with this practice. Are these quality machines or not?

3 - To PCIe 4.0 or not: Despite X1C9 (and X1 Extreme gen 4) being the only ThinkPads in the 2021 product stack to actually support PCIe 4.0 M.2 drives, some are still being shipped with PCIe 3.0 M.2 drives, leaving up to half of the performance on the table for no good reason - besides Lenovo penny pinching and screwing the customer.

I hope Lenovo can resolve at least some of these issues in time for the big &quot;30th Anniversary&quot; celebration, but as someone who&#39;s owned ThinkPads for 20 years (I&#39;m on my 9th personally) I doubt they will. While I would have given Lenovo an A-grade for the 2018 series of ThinkPad, overall I&#39;m downgrading them to B-grade for their glaring deficiencies and anti-consumer practices as outlined above.

After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) where available and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. (We also turn Wi-Fi off, putting the laptop into airplane mode.) In this test, we loop a video&mdash;a locally stored 720p file of the Blender Foundation short film Tears of Steel&mdash;with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system quits.
