 A little bit of low B action, handling that admirably, I really like that, surprisingly for a small cabinet. We have done smaller cabinets previously and pushing the volume, sometimes the speakers start to not want to handle those low Bs, this hasn't given way at all yet, brilliant. Okay, as I say far right hand side we've got a master volume here and we are pretty low, we've got a lot to dial up on here so maybe if you're running two of these cabinets or even something much bigger, a Trace Elliott 8x10 for example, you still can have a fair amount of volume available from this amplifier to drive that type of cabinet as well. Headphone socket for quiet practice, there isn't an auxiliary input on this amplifier, maybe that would be cool because it is so small you could use this as like a little practice in your pocket type amp, but not available, let's face it they've crammed enough into this tiny box already

Let's go round the back, we have a mains input of course, a single quarter inch jack socket for your speaker cabinet, there's no speak on on here, and we also have a post EQ DI, what that basically means is you're going to get your EQ settings coming through the DI as well, so out to front of house PA or your recording device, whatever that might be you're going to get the glorious tone and the compression settings from the amp. The whole thing itself is just ridiculous, it weighs nothing, it's less than a kilo, and you know you've probably seen in the advertising campaign there is a picture of this in someone's back pocket and I've tried it out, I did it earlier on actually, stuck it in my pocket and it's not exactly going to pull your trousers down so it's nice and light

 Okay, so let's move on, the amplifier is sat on the Trace Elliott 2x8 speaker cabinet, this is a ported cabinet and there is also 1x10 available in the range as well that you could stack with this and have like a mini super stack as it were. To stop the amp from disappearing, probably not going to see it actually if I tip the amp up, but there is a little tray shape, this amp is actually sat in, so it's got its nice little bed, so it's not going to slide off the top of the cabinet or anything like that considering it is so incredibly light. Cabinet itself, hopefully you can probably see it from the close up, we've got a really nice kind of tough cab type covering on here, it's not Tolex, it's like a painted on rough finish which I think looks really, really tasty, around the back of the cabinet there's a nice handle and honestly you can pick up this cabinet and walk across the room with one hand, weighing in at just 12 kilos, it's not exactly going to be a struggle. The speakers themselves, we're kind of used, I'm used to knowing that Trace Elliott always use Celestion speakers, a little bit of a departure, this one has fatal drivers in them, which I really like actually, I've always been a fan of those, great sounding speakers in this ported cabinet, the 1x10 also features fatal drivers as well, the neodymium, so again nice and light, and the cabinet weighing in at 400 watts, so this will take a 400 watt rating, I don't know if I mentioned actually, the amplifier is a 200 watt head, so a couple of these cabinets is never going to actually have any problems with running the amp

And then wrapping up, finally out of the box, we also have this rather tasty carry bag, looks like a little wash bag, it's so small, this is the bag which comes with the Trace Elliott Alf, so it will protect your investment, pop it in your case and away you go

Trace Elliot ELF Bass Amplifier | Review

All told it cost me $600 used, $250 for the cab, $350 for the amp. A lot of bassists are moving towards these types of rigs, it seems; small setups that fit in the trunk and weigh less than 100lbs. Warwick Gnome, Trace Elliot Elf, Peavey MiniMax and Mega, class D amps that weigh less than 10lbs, some actually will fit in your pocket.

Most affordable and minimalist live bass rig for playing small clubs?

The amp is well made, has great tone and is extremely compact, but the fan is noisy and the noise modulates with input level, not heat generated or output wattage. So even if used with headphones, the fan undulates up and down in noise and frequency as you play, and is easily heard across the room. Personally I found it very annoying for my application which is for a small, high quality practice setup. However, if you're looking for a cheap, efficient amp that you can use when performing with a band, I would expect the fan will be drowned out by everything else going on

Excellent for playing with a band, noisy fan if you're for a practice or studio amp

 Even if you have a really really good amp, just have this as a replacement or like a spare amp in your bass bag and this is how far we have come and how we can use bass amps now. It's incredible. And just one thing that you should be aware of if you are buying this amp, there are ventilation holes on the top and also on the side and you should make sure never to block them because these small amps can get very hot especially if you are using them at a high volume. Yeah, I guess that's all that I can say about this amp

 Also, this preamp was really nice so this is definitely worth a watch, it's a brilliant digital concept and if this amp is only half as good as the Transit B then it's still The Tracer Elliot Elf is an incredibly small bass head that seems to be limited in size only by the controls and by the in-in outputs now. It's really funny to see how far we have come with these things and if this trend continues like this in a couple of years we will have bass amps within the size of a matchbox that will be controlled with the chip in your brain or whatever the future will bring, I don't know. However, the Elf delivers continuous at 200 watts at 4 ohms, at 8 ohms it's still 130 watts and it weighs only 730 grams, yes we are measuring the weight of bass amps in grams now. So, welcome to the future! The controls are of course limited but you still get everything that you really need

 This amp is so small that of course the controls and the functionality is a little bit compromised by this size but I think everything that you really need is in here and I think it's actually cool. It's not just a toy or gadget, I think it's a real bass amp that you can use for all kinds of club gigs, for rehearsals unless of course you are playing in a super-large heavy metal band then this is not for you but otherwise for every normal application I think this is the perfect amp. Even if you have a really really good amp, just have this as a replacement or like a spare amp in your bass bag and this is how far we have come and how we can use bass amps now. It's incredible

For $350 you can get a 200w Trace ELF that's 7x4x2". Fits in the side pocket of a gig bag. Sounds great paired with a good cab. 

I am currently looking for a smaller sized Sam’s, pretty much nothing too large. I saw a used blackstar u120 for $360. Is that a good deal or should I be looking at other brands entirely? Also considering orange and fender but not sure what to get. Looking for something kinda punchy for rock ala Tool-ish. No bigger than 17x17 and under $500 or more.

Looking for a smaller sized amp

  + Nice included included Nylon Carrying Bag - would be Better with a Shoulder Strap - or with Metal D Rings to add one . . . 

5 Star Practice Amp ( the tone is Ok ) - Personally - Recommended as Preferable to an all-in-one / Combo for the Versatility.  + 4.0 Star Backup Amp ( if a Low Power BU / Class D Transistor Head TONE will work - look no further )  SUMMARY:  1. I Prefer a Tube Head Tone

 It is NOT the equal of a SWEET sounding Tube Head - which is my Overall Preference & Recommendation if ultimate TONE is the Priority. If comparing a TUBE HEAD to a TRANSISTOR or Hybrid Head - the TUBE HEAD only requires apx 20 - 25% of the rated RMS ( not the deceptive / BS "peak power" rating - think 10x+ . . 

 Transistor Amps Sound Very NASTY when driven into Clipping - which is why they require 4x - 5x a Tube Amps RATED RMS Power ( 10x+ if using the BS "Peak Power" pseudo-rating.  + Very Efficient Output & Energy Consumption - for the Ultra Compact Size & Price.  Application Ratings:  + 3.0 Star Main Amp ( assuming Miked or Low SPL* gigs / + an Efficient Cabinet )  + 3

 So we can hear that the speaker has a nice bit of colour to it, a nice bit of punch and certainly those lovely mid range frequencies are going to help cut through in the mix. Which when you have a smaller combo, I mean we're fighting physics a little bit, we can't exactly get the sound out of a massive 8x10 cabinet but it's really, really good to know that with this tonal colour we can certainly get a lot of volume out of it. Okay, let's hear some more tones then. Everything we need for our extra connections is right here

 Speaking of the controls and I'm going to just bring up an image so you can see we have input gain, bass, middle and treble and master volume. To the left hand side of course the input jack we know that well and on the right hand side we have a line out and headphone jack so we can plug in earphones and do some silent practice. Whilst we are looking at the controls we can see that we have two LEDs, the one on the right hand side just lets us know that the combo is powered up. And the one near the gain control is a multi-function indicator, when we have signal going in it will flash green

 This is what it sounds like with finger style. You can hear a blend between the DI and the microphone there and it gives us a really, really nice rounded sound. This is what the bass sounds like with just the microphone on its own. And of course with the DI on its own

 I am playing through a Spectre Euro 4 LT bass and I'm going to run both pickups full on, little tiny bit of bass boost and the treble is flat. The controls on the back of the amp, we've got a bit of bass boost, some mid cut and a little treble cut so not far off 12 o'clock. This is what it sounds like with finger style. You can hear a blend between the DI and the microphone there and it gives us a really, really nice rounded sound

Trace Elliot Elf Combo

 * PJB C2 - 200W - $350 - 12.5" x 8" x 11". * PJB BG75 Double Four - 75W - $480 -  11" x 8" x 6.8" - Big fan of the size of this one, and the fact that it could be powered via a battery is appealing

 The way this amp is, it can drive a single ten, all the way to an 810. You'll need an efficient 610 or bigger, if you want it to run well in a band.  This amp is NOT for live play. Perhaps some garage band, small pubs, where your sound is very constricted, or with an electronic drummer, or drummer in a cage

 Works well with unvoiced cabs. Though tone versatility and power doesn't match the Tc Electronics BQ500. I find the BQ500 to be a hair better in tone, and has more volume (enough for live play with a twin 12", or a 410).  My amp has a very loud fan

 My main complaint is the 200W. I wished they would have brought out a bigger (500-600W) amp version of this (and 2 speaker jacks)

Low on power.

 We also have a built in power supply. This means that we can use a regular IEC power cable instead of a wall wart or a lump in the line power supply that's external to the unit. But of course, the best features of the ELF are that first of all, it sounds absolutely amazing, and second, it's so tiny and lightweight. In fact, it's small enough that you could drop it into the pocket of your gig bag and make just one trip from your car at the gig

 It puts out 130 watts into 8 ohms, or a massive 200 watts into 4 ohms. It's a very simple amplifier to operate. We've got input gain, master volume, 3 bands of EQ, a headphone output, and we've also got a built in DI for feeding directly into a console whether you're recording or playing live. Among the cool features in this amplifier, we have a signal present LED and that changes color when you push the input into limiting

 For convenience, the ELF comes with its own carrying bag, and there's an extra slot in here so you have room for your power cable, a speaker cable, as well as the amplifier itself. Again, a very compact, lightweight, easy way to get your tone and carry it into the gig in one trip. I'm absolutely blown away by the new ELF from Trace Elliott. It's amazing that they could fit that powerful of an amplifier with that much tone into this tiny, lightweight enclosure
