Uniden’s R7 is a top of the line radar detector with a built-in GPS feature. With the R7, you can mark geographical points where you commonly encounter radar transmissions. These can be school zones, red-light cameras, and places where Police frequently monitor traffic. You can mark these points so the detector will announce “user mark ahead” when you approach them. The Uniden R7 is an advanced radar detector at a very fair mid-high price point. This model balances being highly customizable with clear enough operations to allow for a quick learning curve and simple settings adjustments. This detector is accurate with the best range in the business. We were able to detect a cop over 5 miles away through winding mountainous roads. The built-in GPS technology offers several options to keep false alarms down, blocking alarms caused by radars found on things like automatic doors and train tracks. The manual lockout feature will allow the user to permanently mute any non-threatening, stationary triggers. Additionally, uploaded information like red-light cameras can be stored on the device, with firmware updates bringing confirmation of those locations. Thus the R7 is highly customizable, accurate, and long-range, yet still very easy to use. It includes a large multicolored OLED screen which is automatically brightened or dimmed based on a built-in ambient light sensor. Clear, unique, and crisp audible alerts round out this excellent package.
While the manual GPS lockout feature is an absolute star, it does take a moment to get used to. To lockout a location, you have to double-click the mute button. The first few times we tried using this feature, we just ended up muting the device rather than locking out the location. However, once you figure out the cadence of the double click, it is a non-issue. Compared to some of Uniden's other detectors, the R7 is quite large. This did not bother us as it is very easy to remove from the window mount when not in use, and if placed low on the dash, it does not impede the driver's vision. The biggest complaint we have with the R7 is that the BSM &#40;blind-spot monitoring&#41; filtering leaves much to be desired. Generally speaking, this triggers a K-band alert, so turning the K-sensitivity down a notch helps mitigate the problem. Overall this is a high-end radar at a mid-high price and is an excellent option for anyone looking to keep those pesky speeding tickets off their driving record.

 Now if the front and rear antenna are receiving the same signal strength then the display will show you side arrows. At the top here this is a sensor for laser detection. Here's a look on this side. Over here is a micro USB connector

 Here's a database version. And exit. So I've been using this unit in R7 for a couple of months now and overall I am happy with the performance of this radar detector. The ability to provide alerts for police radar is very good

 So if you're a motorcycle rider you can plug a headset to this. Looking at the front the display you see here is angled towards the driver. Over here is the rear-facing horn antenna. So this radar detector has two antennas

 Before we take a closer look at the R7, I want to give you a comparison look of the size and design of the UNIDEN R3, UNIDEN DFR9, and the R7 right here. As you can see the R7 is a lot bigger than the R3 but is similar in size to the DFR9 except for the angled display here. The button layout between the R3 and the DFR9 are very similar. GPS auto mute is pretty cool but this unit gets tons of false calls on standard settings and unless you have an education on how radar technology works good luck with the custom settings. I personally feel this unit is way over priced. I would research units at half the cost

 It's a bigger improvement and again, closer to the R7. And then on 35.5, it actually traded shots with the R7 going back and forth. And the longest detection of the day on 35

 This weekend, as I mentioned, I plan on going out and doing my red barn testing with the V1 Gen 2, the R7, and a bunch of other comparable detectors. The forecast for this weekend is rain and snow. So fingers crossed that we'll be able to go out and do that test. But again, this is one test and so far things are looking really promising here with the new V1 Gen 2

 And then once we've got all the different testing that we need to do completed and we're all getting pretty comfortable with the detector, then we'll do a full review of the V1 Gen 2. We'll compare it to maybe the original V1. There's a lot more than just a new display and a new case under the hood. It is a much, much better detector

Awesome except for the suction mount

 The additional space may be there for some design reason, but because of its shape, I doubt that is the case. It doesn't take advantage of the extra space with a larger display, nor have buttons on the front which would be more convenient. Because of its size, it is much more prone to shaking and wobbling around than the R3 - again, annoying.  #2 - As just mentioned, the mute and mark buttons are on the left side

  #4 - For the price, give me a damn hard-wire kit. Forget the silly case that will be hardly used and give me a hard-wiring kit which would actually be very useful. If I were to un-mount the detector every time I got out of the vehicle, scrounged around for its case, unplugged it, put it in its case, then somehow find a place to store this case which is 4 times the size it needs to be and doesn't fit in most cars, I would have spent an additional 2-3 minutes each time (and the same on getting back in!), all while some criminally opportunistic person is watching me and wondering what I'm trying to hide.  Overall it seems a good radar detector, but the new bulky design I dislike, the button locations are poor, and as mentioned, for the price give me a hard-wire kit

This R7 radar detector, so far, seems to work well. I have been using an R3 for several years and have been very pleased with it's performance, so opted to try out this new R7.  I like the directional arrows, which is one of the main (if not only) reason for getting this unit. It does add to the value of knowing when you're being painted with a radar frequency

  The price, in my opinion, is high and thus the 4 stars. Operationally the unit seems to work well.  However, coming from the R3, there are some drawbacks that I've found.  #1 - the size of the detector is almost ridiculous
