 The ticker X can act as a heart rate monitor and a cadence sensor. Let's have a look at that Okay, here we have Zwift on Apple TV and we have one connection already taken up via the Kickr bike We'll switch over to heart rate and select the ticker X as a source for heart rate That's happy. Over to cadence. Now the Kickr bike does have cadence But you can see here the ticker X will show up as a cadence source and Once selected and we're pedaling We are not hitting the limits of device connectivity on Apple TV So the Kickr bike is one connection and the ticker X is the other connection But it's giving us heart rate and cadence and you can see that I've just increased my cadence and decrease it That's pretty responsive So it's not perfect cadence, but it is a solution if you want to simplify things and have direct connections via Apple TV So the ticker X may solve a problem there Battery life quoted ticker is up to 500 hours and the ticker X with the accelerometer is working a little harder all the time It's in use so over 200 hours for that A few things of note the ticker run is gone and the ticker fit optical strap is still there for those who don't like straps Price wise remains the same as the original ticker units So US $49

 So when you're clipping it and pressing it to your body It should be more comfortable. Me personally never had any problems with heart rate straps But for a few people that's going to be a welcome change The LED status lights are now on the top of the heart rate monitor rather than the front So when you're clipping your heart rate monitor in if you're looking at the status lights You no longer have to flip it up to see the the status of the unit You can look straight down and it's flashing straight back at you. Connectivity wise there's ANT plus and now three bluetooth connections To the ticker and ticker X. Why three? Well, it solves a problem for Wahoo and their own ecosystem If you had a headwind, a training app such as Zwift or Sufferfest and you're running a head unit all at the same time Three units you can connect to Bluetooth to your heart rate strap

 Now 2014 to 2020 is a long time in technology years So what's changed with generation 2? First up measuring heart rate from a chest strap is a solved problem It was solved many many years ago well before Wahoo came along so nothing changes in that regard The issues around heart rate straps are usually around durability and now the need for more connectivity Straight to the updates for generation 2 and it looks very similar to the older version The pod has been redesigned just a little bit but more so on the back. On the back now the strap integrates a lot Smoother or a lot flatter with the pod itself. So when you're clipping it and pressing it to your body It should be more comfortable.  In my last 3hr 15mn ride over 60 miles and 3k feet of elevation, I have at least 5 flat spots where my wahoo cycling computer recorded a flat 100 - 108 beats per minute. I've never dropped a HRM before like this, including my Wahoo Arm strap that I wear when I ride indoors on Zwift. Returning this and getting a Garmin I guess, this isn't cool.

I really liked the form factor of the new HRM and loved how it disappeared under my jersey. However, I quickly found that I was getting flat spots in my longer rides, seemingly for no reason and it would come back out of the blue.  This Wahoo ticker X also has LED indicator lights that let you know what's going on with the status of the device, is it connected, is it looking for a Bluetooth connection, is it getting a heart rate reading, there's also simultaneous Bluetooth connections that are allowed with this which can be useful. My understanding is if you're working with most Garmin watches you will be able to get all those data metrics. The other thing that's like really unique about this is they've utilized I think they're utilizing the accelerometer in here so you can program a double tap to do something with this heart rate monitor. So one of the things that you could do is if you're running kind of like headless with no watch and no phone and you're running with just the Wahoo Ticker heart rate monitor you could set the double tap to either start and stop your activity

 7.39 miles, 90 minutes, 15 seconds per mile, 136 beats per minute today, at least according to the Wahoo Ticker X. Going for a nice and easy conversational pace with my running buddy. One of many days of testing with this new heart rate monitor

 Now, with that disclosure out of the way, let's talk about why you would want a chest heart rate monitor anyway. If you've got a running GPS watch, whether it's a Wahoo watch, a Polar, Apple Watch, whatever you're using, it's got an optical heart rate sensor on the back. So what do you need another heart rate monitor for? Well, if you're like me and I don't know if it's my skin tone, my bone structure, whatever it is, I just can't get an accurate heart rate reading from an optical sensor on the wrist. No matter what I do, I can crank down the strap as tight as it'll go, I can reposition it, they always say like two fingers down from like your wrist bone, like whatever it is

Wahoo Tickr X Heart Rate Monitor - A Runner's Review

 Readings have occasionally been erratic, but mostly are stable and accurate - much better than the HRM on my elliptical.

This HRM seems to work as advertised, with only minor issues for me. The fit is fine, and I like that the device flashes to show it is working or connecting. I find I have to reconnect the monitor to my phone before each exercise, and it sometimes drops out.  same issues.  If you're looking for an accurate method of keeping track of your calories burned, any HR related metrics or anything else you'd like to get from this device, I'd suggest duct taping a potato to your chest as it will be slightly less effective. I'll be throwing mine away as even the thought of having to spend 20-40 minutes per workout trying to get an accurate reading just isn't worth it.  Two stars because when it did work (for the first month-ish) it was very good

 It is $25 for a replacement from the brand. It actually does some other fancy stuff you get from Gps watches (Elevation, cadence, speed, maps, smoothness of steps, and stores offline workouts) does require both bluetooth and GPS for live feed even when set for indoor exercise. If you dont want to pay for a watch and you dont mind carrying a phone, this is worth the price.

Different from original TickrX

It appears to do a much better job monitoring my heart compared to my Withings Steel HR (fundamental design differences, one goes around chest, the other sits on your wrist). Fairly easy to keep clean (I rinse it in the shower).  The app needs work. English units don't work for the tracking tab (they hadn't since I looked)

 Calibration for fitness equipment is meaningless and a waste of time. Uncalibrated or calibrated, you get the same results for steps/distance which are very much different than the machine you are working on. And when you fix the distance in the app, it will record it, but it messes up your time/mile graphs and the statistics tab doesn't get updated. Nor does Google Fit

It does a pretty good job monitoring your heart

 Both customer service departments made the process straight forward and easy. Both customer service departments get five stars today.  The ticker x heart rate monitor is very good. Sometimes it is clumsy with the Bluetooth connectivity, otherwise I would give it five stars

 Maybe all heart rate monitors have this issue, that is possible. This clumsy connectivity has, so far, not impacted me, it has only been annoying.  I recommend this product.
