1. It depends, if the data on this drive is important for you or you can lose it without regrets. As second drive alternative, cloud backup may be used (approx. 5-6$ monthly for 1TB)

So Ive been lurking in this subbreddit for a while now, and would really like to start hoarding myself. However since I'm a noob I have a few questions regarding the whole data hoarding.

So currently I have around 1TB worth of Movies TV Shows and personal documents, which is stored in many different flash drives lying around. The flash drives are all around 5 years old so I am looking to move all my Data onto a  2TB WD external hard drive. This also would allow me to increase my hoard. My questions are

1. Should I buy two WD external hard drive and use one as back up? Because currently I have no back ups at all.
2. Are  WD My Passport reliable enough to use?
3.  Outside of cost, is there any difference to store data on a disk hard drive versus solid state?  
4. Should I look into investing in a NAS since my collection is bound to get bigger, or is it not worth it at this point in time (I am currently in college)?

  Other than that it is a great product - super fast transfer speeds and it comes in an amazing size. Overall, I'd still recommend this product.

I love this little beast, but sometimes it can be very frustrating to use. I use this drive with a 2015 MacBook Pro that usually works fine unless either (1) the computer dies with the hard drive still plgged in, or (2) the drive is not safely ejected. In either case, the drive is no longer recognized when I plug it in again and I need to run a disk repair using the Disk Utility app. Sometimes the repair fails and I need to either restart my computer or unplug/replug the drive several times for the repair to work

Amazing size, okay performance

 Read and write times run in the 400 Mb/s range with no hiccups noted. One thing I did notice is the case does heat up under heavy use, but it is just warm to the touch. Not hot at all. The unit itself feels well built but I do recommend getting the case for it as it is so small and light I do worry about it getting lost!  In conclusion, if you are needing a portable external storage solution with fast read and write times, it is well worth investing in the WD My Passport SSD

1 Gen 2 ready and does include the type-c cord which has type-c connectors on both ends. But it also includes and adaptor for the standard USB 3.0 connector, which is what the Surface Pro 4 has. The read and write times are about 4X as fast as our previous HDD and it is able to keep up with Lightroom to the point where I cannot tell a real difference between using the internal or external (WD) SSD

 Not hot at all. The unit itself feels well built but I do recommend getting the case for it as it is so small and light I do worry about it getting lost!  In conclusion, if you are needing a portable external storage solution with fast read and write times, it is well worth investing in the WD My Passport SSD.

Got this as an "addon" drive for my MacBook Pro, I used some Velcro to stick it to the top of the lid and it's working great. I'm impressed with the speed, real world numbers I'm seeing are around 500MB / sec read and 475 MB/s writes, which means moving 10 GB in a little over 20 seconds! As an old timer in computers I'm blown away at that, even though I know the newer drives are even much faster. For ebooks, music and movie storage it's plenty fast and the same speed as the internal SSD in my last MacBook.  My only big complaint is the cable that comes with it, it's very stiff and when I attached it to the drive I think it damaged one of my USB ports, even though I pre-bent it into shape
