 They both accept the same microphone attachment capsules but the H5 does not have a color screen. Once again this may be something that you find unnecessary so going with the H5 may save you a couple bucks. I personally wouldn't go for any of the recorders below the H5 because I've heard the quality just isn't as good. The Zoom H5 costs $279 US, the H6 is $329 and the H8 is $399

 With these two you have a very portable and completely wireless setup. No cables, no power plugs, it's very clean setup and easy to take on location, outside, inside, the middle of the mountains, anywhere. For someone just starting out recording audio, you'd be hard-pressed to find one single piece of equipment that can fill so many roles. Add the non-compromising sound quality and portability and it's pretty clear this is a great buy

 The Zoom H6 is a recorder that records high quality audio directly to an SD card and is powered with batteries. For this video I'm recording to the recorder with this Deity D3 Pro Shotgun mic. The Zoom H6 is portable, built well and feels solid without being too large or heavy. It has exceptional preamps with very little self noise when compared to other recorders

 -Gain knobs move too easy (big sub hits have moved my knobs, moving unit during location recording could potentially bump gain) stupid problem until it happens to you and you lost your track because the knob floated a little and your unit distorted -Accessing the menu and navigating in the unit is a head ache when your cables and headphones are attached -Volume adjustment is a small push button under the headphone jack that has a slower response -Fixed dynamic presets to apply on channels (general limiter, concert limiter, studio limiter), user doesn’t dial in threshold, attack, etc.  To finish this up, can you get usable recordings for whatever project your working on. YES! You can, however, I will say the road there will be longer and more bumpy. More time and caution will be needed listening and gain staging while working around the problems at hand

Buying my first digital recorder to record nature sounds - looking at Zoom H4n, H5, or H6

 There are other recorders that come complete with headphones, mics, SD card and USB cord. Hopefully the quality of the recording device will be worth all the hassle of needing to purchase everything else separately.

I just got looked at the footage from an event and realised I was shooting in 720p the whole time. please grief with me.

great for my needs which are 1 mic vocals and 1 acoustic guitar; sound quality is ok, but to be fair i was using playback speaker which is below average, basically was scratch recording for practice; i had about 1 hours worth of recordings and it went dead after the batteries emptied. Im returning it. I may get another or opt for tascam dp008. The dp008 has effects and preamps that are high rated, ultimately for a better finished project
