 However, I did find a possible reason for the difficulty other purchasers have reported.  The water supply lines were not cut cleanly nor completely straight. That is not particularly important for the standard compression fittings, but the filter unit has push-on fittings that require that the tubing is inserted completely. Because the supply line tubing cuts had small burrs and were not straight it was not possible to insert the tubing fully into the tubing connections on the filter unit

  For Aquasana: Please tighten your quality control on the supply line tubing cutter. It will avoid a lot of grief.

Read the installation instructions, got out the tools and cleaned out the under-sink cabinet. Step 1, "Attach the threaded ends of SUPPLIED brass tee..

Gaskets may need adjusting out of box

 The filter had a slow leak around the filter cartridge, causing a drip. A trip to the hardware store for new rubber O rings solved the problem for a dollar. An easy fix, but one I shouldn't have had to make. Plus, if I hadn't been paying attention that little drip could have destroyed my kitchen cabinet, flooring, etc

. Bigger problem was with the O rings in the filter unit. The filter had a slow leak around the filter cartridge, causing a drip. A trip to the hardware store for new rubber O rings solved the problem for a dollar

Good Unit with a few issues.

We have been using the system for two years - it was ok, but it cracked and was leaking badly when water pressure went up - better to keep the water pressure low - otherwise, it is fine. Better to replace the filters and the system altogether to avoid problems.

 I'm used to my old 2-stage filter, it filled the bottle quickly (it had 3/8 inch supply tubing but I had to replace it after 20 years, the sump cracked and the replacement part is no longer available). Oh well, I will just have to learn patience.

The water filter was fairly straight forward to install, however; I thought it was 3/8" supply tubing but it turned out it has only a 1/4" supply tubing. I have 50PSI water pressure (which is over the minimum inlet pressure of 40 PSI), it still takes about three minutes to fill a half gallon bottle. I'm used to my old 2-stage filter, it filled the bottle quickly (it had 3/8 inch supply tubing but I had to replace it after 20 years, the sump cracked and the replacement part is no longer available). Oh well, I will just have to learn patience

 I briefly considered giving Friend 2 the stove so that they could complete our loop but as the minutes progressed Friend 1 lost more of the shreds of alterness and orientation they had and it because clear we needed to descend immediately before they passed out or worse. At this moment Friend 2 appeared just under saddle of the pass. Luckily they were still in shouting distance and I was able to convey that Things Were Bad and they needed to come back; however, they insisted on making it to the top of the pass before turning around. Nothing I could do about that - my focus was now on starting Friend 1 down the mountain

In my years of summer Sierra jaunts, this was the first one to go modest garbage fire, where a series of small errors indirectly set the stage for a bigger event: one friend in our group of three got HACE at around 11K ft on the morning of Day 2, rapidly shifting the goal from completing a brawny-to-us loop to getting them home safely. Like all new converts, I had been heavily proselytizing the UL way pre-trip, and I think getting their pack weights down some enabled us to more safely and effectively handle the emergency that came up. 

I'm a full on UL minded hiker- my tent has no poles and is supported by my hiking sticks, my sleeping bag is a quilt, every gram is scrutinized, etc.

7. Pepper spray isn't a substitute for bear spray. Get the real thing - *if you need it* - or skip

 Swift Cup coffee is *easily* better than stale-bean, poorly-made backcountry AeroPress, IMHO. Always appreciate a fellow Prismo attachment fan, though!

 If you don't do that, the bag will explode so you better have a backup. I suggest SmartWater bottles as backup.
