Bose QuietControl 30 Review

Generally, I’d say they’re good, but your mileage WILL vary. Overall, I prefer my QuietControl 30s, but obviously the open ear concept is huge for some use cases.

I have a mixed opinion of them in general. I love the concept and overall sound quality (considering what they are), but you really need to try them for your specific use and habits. You can get them reasonably loud for somewhat noisy environments - I’d expect that type of wind noise would be fine based on how I use mine. 

Battery life isn’t great, but should last for a few hours. The buds also don’t support multipoint connections, so they can only connect to one device at a time (probably ok when cycling). 

Fit seems pretty good normally, but how your glasses sit on your ear is critical.  I normally have no problems, but if my glasses are a bit askew, then the buds can get uncomfortable. The buds seem pretty secure unless you rub your ear - then it’s very easy to pop them off accidentally. 

I'm looking for some open ear headphones to use while cycling.  Comparing the Aeropex bone conduction headphones to the Bose Open Earbuds.  

Does anyone have any feedback on these specific points?

* How secure are they while wearing a helmet and glasses, any concerns of them falling off during sprints or shoulder checks?
* How easy are they to hear in heavy wind?  Are they loud enough to hear podcasts at \~40 km/hr (25 mph) while not sacrificing awareness of your surroundings?

Does anyone use Open Earbuds for Cycling?

 They're just too uncomfortable to wear for long stretches like I hoped they would.  So..

 I've tried half a dozen at least at every price point and I feel like goldilocks but I haven't found my "just right" yet.  sigh..

 When I wear them, the noise cancelling feature is pretty much negated and they slip out.  The large plugs seem too big and while it creates a nice seal around the ear and helps the noise-cancelling feature provide the best results, they leave my ears sore and fatigued after just a little while.  This might be another one of those "me" things. The description talked about how the buds are not meant to go "in" the ear like other buds but rather they sit on/just outside the ear while that little wing holds them in place

I suffer from very intense tinnitus and migraines. Even mild ambient noise or cross talk can cause the ringing to spike in volume which triggers my migraines.  I got these because they were so highly rated for their noise-cancelling feature and comfort. Bluetooth was a must-have for me so I went with these as opposed to the model before

Bill Callahan's "Drover," a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better idea of the QC 30's overall sound signature. The drums on this track receive a heavier-than-usual dose of bass presence, but it's never unpleasant. The result is a robust, round bass sound for the drums that's deep and full but not so inflated that it veers into unnatural territory. Callahan's baritone vocals receive some added richness as well, which they don't really need, but the QC 30 does a laudable job of keeping things crisp and clear with high-mid and high frequency presence&mdash;the vocals and the guitar strumming get a solid treble edge

  Long term concerns: - Since the earphones are always dangling, I'd expect with long term use I'm going to loose more than one ear mold getting caught and popping off. - Having owned 3 other Bose over-ear Quietcomfort headsets (which all have had earpad and headpad deterioration of materials after 2 years), I know they have their industrial design honed for 2-3 year material breakdown. I'm concerned that the rubber used will start becoming sticky and intolerable after 1-2 years of use (like my Bose SoundSports have become). - I have right ear hearing damage from using a Bose Bluetooth headset Series 2 for podcast/music listening at too high a volume (trying to use it in too noisy environments), so I am very careful now with volume and single ear use

 - Once Bose went to the in-ear with extra noise baffle, it does a good job at reducing noise in addition to the extra tech that also does noise reduction.  The Bad: - The around the neck is almost equally proportioned in it's design. It's counting on it's rubberized material to be sticky enough not to twist around (which it's constantly doing). Any around the neck needs to have a shape that allows gravity to help keep heavier weighted areas in the lowest position (eg LG Tone Ultra)

 Using the Bose app, what you're adjusting with more/less noise cancellation is the amount of sound that is either relayed from the mic thru the headphones, or how much external noise is cancelled by the headphones. Why I say this, is because if you turn off all noise cancellation thru the app, you can hear everything around you like you didn't have any earphones in. However if you power down the headphones, you get the natural noise reduction of having an in-ear headphone occluding external noise. I think this is a conscious engineering choice, and serves two purposes: 1) It makes the "noise cancelling" feature seem more impressive as you adjust it's level up and down 2) Technically I think they designed the headset to be worn 100% of the time, and adjusting the noise cancellation level using the two dedicated buttons when the situation around you is you're talking with someone, or when you want to block out as much as possible all external noise

Bose quality sound, with engineered problems makes this ultimately not a keeper unless money is not a concern to you

I bought these as a wireless replacement for my much loved and well used QC20s. As I've only had them for a few days, please take this as a "first impression" review for those with similar requirements.  Before buying, I read through the reviews on both Amazon and on Bose.com and was encouraged but a little concerned

 Airplane noise cancelling seems to be every bit as good as the QC20's and I like the variable noise cancelling (as opposed to binary). The app to control volume, noise cancelling and audio playback is great; i find myself using it regularly.  Now, the ergonomics. I thought I'd be okay with the "horse collar" that contains the electronics and batter, but not so much

  After a few flights, several hours of use, and making and receiving a number of phone calls, I like the performance and earpiece comfort every bit as much as my QC20's. In my experience, using them as a phone headset is better than the QC20's and folks with whom I'm speaking report that my voice clarity is very good. Pleasantly surprised by these / HATE the horse collar

 - I am almost unable to make any phone calls using this pair. once I try to make or receive a phone call. noise cancellations gets disrupted and voice quality becomes very poor where you can almost not be Able to complete a short phone call because the voice of the person on the other line is so far away. I didn't expect to use this set for phone calls

 but not laptop. I called customer service and it was kinda not satisfying call , because he was talking to me as if , how come you don't know how to connect your bluetooth devices ? and he says that its basically any bluetooth device should be able to connect to the headset. I have tried everything possible , resetting my laptop bluetooth. resetting the headset connection

 but for some reason it is never found as a bluetooth device by my computer. it connects nicely to iPhones / iPads. but not laptop. I called customer service and it was kinda not satisfying call , because he was talking to me as if , how come you don't know how to connect your bluetooth devices ? and he says that its basically any bluetooth device should be able to connect to the headset

 with iPhone I find it connects smoothly.  negativs : - battery doesn't really last long. a full charge can last you something around 5-6 hours with full continuous use. I have to charge it to full dailyat night even if I didn't continuously use it earlier during the day

Suddenly there were loud, buzzy and sharp sounds that really hurt my ears, plugged in to AC and not, with ANC on, and not. Had to return them. Aside from that, they were way too bulky with being tethered to my phone by the jack - would have kept them had they not had the sound glitch

 I thought I'd try out the bluetooth bose with active noise cancelling, and love them so far (have reviewed them as well).

3rd Update - up from 1 star (and before that, 5 stars) Bose came through this time! I spoke to a supervisor who spent an hour troubleshooting a glitch that could not be fixed. Glitches happen, which is understandable; I explained that what I do not understand is that Bose did not send the last replacement IMMEDIATELY like Amazon had on the 1st replacement -- the supervisor agreed Bose should send this replacement immediately - and NOT wait until they received the defective pair. I was relieved.  Had Bose replaced each pair under warranty immediately, I would give them 5 stars on a great pair of headphones  Update on my review - known issue, 2nd time falling apart Main gripe is Bose makes you wait for your replacement until they've received the old headphones!! Why doesn't Bose do like other amazon returns - if you don't return the item you're charged!! Customer service is not meeting its promises
