Have the Asus ZenWiFi AX mesh in our 2000 sq.ft., 2-story house, and no problems with 2 iPhones and 2 iPad Pro's. They're always connected, and the reliablity and wireless coverage of the mesh is great

I've spent the last couple hours looking for a mid-tier mesh system for my home. My 10+ year old netgear router seem to have died (no longer powers on). This means no WiFi at home. In our current house, coverage has always been bad, because the router is in one corner or our home, which is basically a square footprint with rooms divided by interior walls, about 2000sqft of needed coverage. I have a CAT cable run to the living room, so I can do an access point or hardwired mesh node. 

Long story short, I starting looking at the Deco X60 kit, the Nest kit, and Eero kit, and basically all of them have recent reviews about how connections frequently drop for iOS devices. There's lots of reference to turning off 5ghz and turning off a Private Address setting on the iOS devices. Bottom line is that this seems like a pain in the ass, regardless of whether it is Apple's fault or an issue with new WiFi 6 hardware. 

I'm paying for half-gig service from my ISP, so would avoiding WiFi 6 and sticking with previous generation mesh kits be a decent option? 

My other option is to get into Ubiquiti. My brother has an ACPRO access point he can give me. So maybe I should get a UniFi Dream Machine and put the access point in the living room?

Looking for a mesh system, but they all seem to suffer from similar issues regarding iOS devices frequently disconnecting?

 I sent a message to Asus tech support with no response but hopefully they will address this in a software or firmware update. Asus provides Free security while most other manufacturers doNot. Unfortunately the browser interface allows for a easier setup and to fix vulnerabilities compared to the IOS app. If you follow the above rules you will be very happy with this router

4ghz only it’s best to assign them to a separate network ID. Same for 5ghz devices. If you go for the default option of one network ID your just asking for problems. Another thing I noticed is the web browser interface allows for more advanced setting but seems to be getting quirky to log in and when changing to different tabs

 The regular 2.4ghz network works correctly it’s just the Guest Network that has this issue. I sent a message to Asus tech support with no response but hopefully they will address this in a software or firmware update. Asus provides Free security while most other manufacturers doNot

Asus Mesh Solves Problems like “All” Mesh has some quirks

ISP-provided router connects to the internet (Orange Livebox 5, if it matters). Asus Zenwifi mesh connects by ethernet to the ISP router and everything then connects via wifi or ethernet to this mesh. I haven't touched the default security settings on the Livebox (I assume none) and haven't messed with the Zenwifi either but I believe it has some basic default protections. I don't think I have a firewall enabled in the Livebox or the Zenwifi

 I have only 1 user on the NAS (strong password and 2FA enabled), all the other containers run with that user's PUID. I only configured one user in jellyfin too (strong, different password, no 2FA). I forwarded all the http ports for the above apps on my Livebox, as well as 5000/5001 for DSM. Going through Synology's DDNS, I have remote access to all containers and to DSM (and assorted apps - DS file etc

 I haven't touched the default security settings on the Livebox (I assume none) and haven't messed with the Zenwifi either but I believe it has some basic default protections. I don't think I have a firewall enabled in the Livebox or the Zenwifi.

I've finally got my NAS in a place I like, so now I'd like to patch up any security holes I left behind me while I was fiddling with everything. Not just vulnerabilities to malicious action but just accidents too. I'm looking for quick wins and low-hanging fruit, it's not like I'm likely to be targeted by (or, let's be honest, able to defend against) a determined hacker. 

Smartphone required for setup :(  and I'm grumpy!

 Some of them work fine 99% of the time, but 3 plugs and 4 bulbs are giving me issues still). These devices work fine in their mobile app and in the Google Home app, but not HomeKit. I've read this is an mDNS issue, but I don't know what else to try to improve the mDNS on my network. 

 And the secondary node didn't realize its IP is useless until the main node gets its own, signalling "all Good" while network was down.  When that was over, it assigned clients to the wrong node, and there was no direct button to move them, we had to poke around. On the app, it's hard to tell which node you're configuring, since it names them the same and doesn't give any other hint.  As usual, no way of continuously monitoring bandwidth between nodes/client-node bandwidth, so we had to guess the optimal positions and assignments

Poor UI made it hard to optimize speed.  Entering WiFi credentials was easy, so was reaching the admin page. But it wasn't smooth.  First, it never mentioned we need to turn both nodes on before starting the setup process, or that it would help to start in the same room until the functionality is established (to watch the LEDs, because that's all you get for a while)

 The "optimize" button may or may not do anything, it's hard to even tell when it's done "optimizing".  Now, our speed for a 2000sqft, airy home swings between 450Mbps and 20Mbps (yes!) where it used to be 150Mbps with a $50 non-mesh router. Overall, it's better than before, but, frankly, the online reviews and marketing claims are much stronger than what we got.  We'll try getting support and fixing this later

Setup not intuitive, works somewhat

Returning this $600 garbage. Not sure how people deal with routers these days. Never had any trouble with Nest wifi. If only it was in 6ghz.
