While the Orbi router and satellite are large, and their USB ports are not ready for prime time, the system still offers enough to make it our Editors' Choice for home Wi-Fi systems.

Although the Orbi's MU-MIMO performance in testing was good, it isn't quite as fast as what you get from a high-end router like the D-Link DIR-895L/R, or even a midrange router, such as the Linksys EA7500, but at least it supports the technology (the other home Wi-Fi systems we've tested don't). That said, enabled USB ports would be welcome additions.  First I I had to move the router to where the DSL comes in, which is on one end of my home on the ground level. I didn't want to do a lot of rewiring, but with the router plus two satellites, it did leave a dead spot on ground floor on the other end of house. I had to move my home security hub to a new location and I still have a dead spot in the corner at one end of the ground floor. I thought about buying an add-on satellite, but the regular Orbi add on is about 250 and the plug in is around 190 USD

 But the add on satellite should be less than the router/satellite system. Not sure why netgear is doing this to its customers. I almost feel like just selling my current system and going with a different brand.

Okay - I have purchased the router and satellite combo a few months ago due to a lot of good recommendations and reviews by others. I haven't had a chance to set it up due to extremely busy life. ill be honest with you

I bought thisabout 4 months ago to bypass the Verizon router.  Very easy to set up but except for running speed tests, I can't tell a difference.  The satellite doesn't seem to help any.  My phone seems to take longer to load apps than before and we have had some buffering on streaming tv for the first time in years though not a lot

Not as Good as I expected.

The Orbi is very expensive and I do not understand why I need to pay for wifi when I pay monthly for wifi in my home. Except that it did not work in my whole house only in one room. the Orbi is working now but I had to turn off the house wifi in order for it to work.

 Fixes the issue where IPv6 devices on the guest network can access the Orbi router’s web GUI. Includes security fixes for the following security vulnerabilities:PSV-2016-0133, PSV-2017-0607, PSV-2017-0615, PSV-2017-0736, PSV-2017-2190  So an update that supposedly fixes disconnect issues (which I never experienced) does the opposite and starts causing them instead. Thank you Netgear for breaking my perfectly wonderful wifi system. Apparently their engineering team has been spending most of their time introducing new Orbi devices and not spending much time refining their current firmware

 I waited about 10 minutes and it was still stuck, I tried again and the same thing happened, finally I gave up and called Netgear’s support.  Trying to navigate to NetGear’s support was another fun challenge, they seem to hide any way to contact phone support on their main website. They also want you to take a picture of your receipt that you bought the unit to get to support. I wasn’t having any of that, I was already getting fed up that this supposedly super easy Orbi was already giving me problems

Was a great device until they released the 1.12.0.18 update which caused major disconnect issues

 Make it work first, THEN get the users to register. Capiche?  2) The firmware update appears to be broken. The automatic checks come back with "service unreachable" -- really, Netgear, it's your OWN auto-update service! -- and the manual updates REFUSE to recognize their own firmware ZIP files as valid. And yes, I tried to apply the satellite firmware update first, and yes it was the latest, and yes the file was good, and yes I followed the steps in your release notes, and yes I tried multiple times

 Deadzones? Gone. Amazing quality and bandwidth? It brings it in spades. This thing just rocks. Stop suffering with crummy wifi routers and just do it, you'll be kicking yourself for not having done it sooner

 Do yourself a favor and just skip the registration step, go to 192.168.1.1, login as admin, and set it up yourself

The Orbi absolutely CRUSHES every router I've ever owned. Period. (But the firmware update process appears to be broken.)

 In response to this, I added a web site blacklist to my previous router, which blocked most ads from appearing on our devices. The Orbi RBK50 running software version 2.3.5

 Depending on the day and how heavily our household's wifi users access the internet, Pi-hole blocks 3.5% to 6% of RBK50's queries. A quarter to a third of all DNS queries are cached, which reduces DNS lookup times anywhere from 30ms to 220ms down to 2ms or less. The time it took me to configure Pi-hole will be probably be saved in faster internet experiences by our household users in a couple of months

 I continue to use a Web browser to check log files and change configurations. I do not know if there is a later version of the Orbi app that fixes the problems I mentioned in my 2019 review, and do not find the app necessary. I continue to use pi-hole as the DNS server for the Orbi, which blocks ads for all devices connected to my network.

 I will update this review as time passes because some Amazon buyers report premature deaths of the Orbi.  APRIL 2022 UPDATE: The base and satellite continue to operate reliably. I continue to use a Web browser to check log files and change configurations. I do not know if there is a later version of the Orbi app that fixes the problems I mentioned in my 2019 review, and do not find the app necessary

Household client devices are not aware of P-hole, did not require any reconfiguration to use it, and any new devices we connect in the future will have ads blocked automatically

RBK50 so far so good, except for the app

 On the same level as the router, I was averaging 500-600Mbps on 5G bands and 20-40Mbps on 2G band. The wire connection averaged 700-800Mbps. On the lower level, I was 100-200 Mbps on 5G bands and 20-30Mbps on 2G band.  Why did I return it -Slower speeds on lower level

 I tried multiple set ups (large router, mesh router, wifi extenders/repeater, and powerline), but I ultimately ran a wire from the upper level to lower. The main reason for running a wire was that I was only getting a fraction (at the most 200-300Mbps on the download) of my 1gb speed on the lower level.  My current setup (update): 1. TP-Link Wifi 6 AX6000 (main router on upper level)
