 So, as you can see, all of these turntables all try and find a particular niche somewhere they can sell their turntables from and because of that, as the old saying goes, you pays your money and it takes your choice literally in this case, for a 250 pounds. Turntable which compromise appeals mostly to you, do you want a hardcore, audiophile type 10 table as offered by rieger, or do you want a more feature-laden, rather friendly approach to turn table design? Well, if you do want the features - and you want that rather friendlier approach, then my personal choice to fill that particular slot is the audio technica 120 x for the price for 250 pounds. The 120x offers a superb blend of features and sound quality, and i don't hesitate at all in recommending it to you and that's it folks.  It'S lost a couple of kilograms from the previous model, for example, and the included atvm 95e cartridge will die a terrible death if you wanted to use it for scratching. The motor has also been reduced in torque, which may hamper dj related performance, but this is actually a good thing in basic sonic terms: the higher the torque, the more energy a motor will insert into the platter and also the plinth and that energy. Well, it's got to go somewhere and if it's not immediately drained, then it will convert from vibration to high frequency, noise and it'll start veiling, fine detail and that's not a good thing. Hence lowering the torque is on the right lines, at any rate, so the 120x is not really a dj turntable, and what's this the rather bizarre queuing light now, if the 120x is not a dj deck, why go to the trouble of including this little light at All if you're going to include it to enhance the technics aesthetic, then why not include a traditional light design instead of a plug-in job that connects via an rca socket if the cheap and cheerful lenko l3808 can do it, then why can't the 120x and why use That blazingly stark white light, which threatened to give me an instant migraine when activated

 So, let's quickly cut to the chase, shall we and investigate those features in a little bit more depth and let's take a closer look and welcome to the closer look section for the audio technica 120x turntable. Now, as i said, there are some changes afoot on this latest iteration of the 120x, some good, some, i'm not that pleased about. So what i'll do i'll give you a quick overview of the design and my impressions of the same and then i'll give you a more formal parts, rundown just in case i miss anything out. Firstly, the 120x features a new dc servo direct drive motor, the phono amplifier has been quotes improved along with the area around the base of the tone arm

Even at low volume the sound is pretty clear and the speakers feel very dynamic. Before I was using a cheap Sony receiver that was only supplying 20wpc.

Gotta love the Marantz! I've got a 2240 from my childhood I rebuilt. It's my current bedroom stereo, combined with a set of KLH Model 5 speakers and a pioneer PL-530.

Personally, I really like the lower wattage ones. If it wasn't for the sentimental value, I'd prefer a smaller one.

I love my Vandys. You gotta get the stands and get them off the floor though. I’m actually going to sell mine. I was moving them and accidentally bumped the banana plugs coming out the back. The speakers were not active at that moment, so it must’ve broke a connection inside because now that speaker has no midrange.  I can fix it, but working on these is a pain because you gotta bust off the old glue (if you re-glued them last time you messed with it. I don’t think I did thankfully) then pull all these staples to be able to roll up the “sock”. And of course you gotta do all that in reverse when done (but not the glue, fuck it and trust the screws alone). The reasons I’m not in a rush to do that is that I had been borrowing some gear that a friend was looking to sell. He told me I could try it all out and if I could sell any of it he would give me a percentage. I had intended to sell all of it or give it back eventually, but I needed some floor standing speakers to replace the Vandys *temporarily* and luckily I had these B&W DM6 MkIIs that belonged to my buddy. At first I thought they looked ridiculous. That’s why I didn’t consider buying them when he first told me they were for sale. In pictures they did not look visually pleasing at all. *Pregnant Robot Penguins*, I think they are affectionately referred to. No doubt. But put into my system and seeing them like that in person I actually like how they look. They really fit in with the rest of the gear and my console. But maybe I softened my initial opinion because they sound amazing! I will have to A/B them when I get the Vandy fixed, but I think the DM6s are better. It’s close, for sure, they are both very good audiophile speakers and I’m lucky to have experienced both of them for not much money. Your’s look great with your setup and the view. Very sexy. How do you like them? And get the stands! Cheers.    
     
Edit: Oh I just read that yours are the Model 1B. I used to have a pair of the 1C (I think, maybe it was 1B, not sure). I got them in a trade with other stuff that was too good of a deal not to take even though I had the Model 2C already. I probably paid at most $100 for them (it was a bundle so I’m basing this off what the other gear was worth) then I sold them to a buddy 6 months later for $220. They are great speakers, but when you have the 2C and can compare them, they aren’t where it’s at, you dig? Still a very good speaker in their own right, and they do look sexy. Get the stands!

Just moved in with very little, but music goes a long way.

 As far as warped platters go, mine was in perfect shape. No warping at all.  I used the cartridge that came with it and still use it to this day. It works great for the price and I probably won’t upgrade anytime soon because I’m not playing through a $3,000 hi-fi system

They’re great speakers but nothing fancy. I can’t remember how I came to the conclusion, but I decided on using the Löfgren A alignment for the cartridge alignment

Some of the other flaws would also include the cables and wiring on the inside, the fact that there's a filter from the preamp that's installed inside the turntable, and the fact that the cabinet and the plinth as well as the platter are not set up very well for dampening, and there's still sound that rings through. The LP120 really is a decent turntable for the money, but at this stage, it's just not going to work out for us long term, as our LPs need to be considered first. I hope this video was helpful for everyone

 So, unfortunately, that is a flaw with the LP120. Another flaw with the LP120 would be VTA, or vertical tracking angle. This is an issue with the height adjustment along here, as you cannot lower the tonearm any lower than where it currently is set. Vertical tracking angle does critically affect sound, and this is something to be taken seriously when it comes to this turntable

 So let's go ahead and test it right now. The only thing I hear, and I'm all the way down here next to it, the only thing I hear is the central air unit that's going through our apartment. I do not hear anything, and have never heard anything from the LP120 except silence. Some of the other flaws would also include the cables and wiring on the inside, the fact that there's a filter from the preamp that's installed inside the turntable, and the fact that the cabinet and the plinth as well as the platter are not set up very well for dampening, and there's still sound that rings through

The angle of the stylus can significantly affect record playback, and if it is not properly aligned and sitting within the grooves, it has been known to damage records, and this is something that was a serious problem for us, and was one of the biggest deciding factors when it came to upgrading from the LP120 to a Technics SL1200. A temporary solution for this problem was to add another slip mat, and in this case, we added our cork mat to bump the tonearm a little higher and to give it better alignment with the LP

Flaws & Misconceptions of the Audio Technica LP120

They’re the first speakers I’ve actually had to set up with my own speaker wire so it’s been a bit of a learning experience getting them set up, but now that they’re set up I couldn’t be happier with how they sound. I’ve got them hooked up to my Yamaha R-S202 with an old TEAC CD changed, vintage JVC cassette deck, and a fairly new Audio Technica AT-LP120.

These are nice starter speakers. I hope you have a good amp to power them

My first pair of brand new speakers, Klipsch R-41M on the desk for some good music while gaming

The media could not be loaded. I was very surprised at the quality and weight of this device - it was very easy to setup and initially it looked wonderful. But then I noticed that the record was moving up and down as it rotated - at first I thought it was warped except that this was a new record that's been played twice in two years. After removing the record and the turntable mat and getting down at eye-level with the turntable it became apparent that the platter was warped

 THAT is what yielded such great audio quality results that rivaled,and in some cases,surpassed those of a better or higher quality name brand.The reason for the four star review is because this is an area where AT could still make some improvements with the AT LP-120.

I have purchased audio equipment in the past in which the manufacturer may not have used esoteric,exotic, or even super grade materials like the more refined and high end competitors. However, it was in the execution and accuracy of the design and production on how those less expensive materials were best used. If  the Technics' 1200 is the "Wheel of Steel", does that make the Audio Technica AT LP-120 the "Tin to Spin"?!

 This is a bigger, heavier, more expensive unit. Sound quality wise, are you going to notice a big difference? I would say not. Now, you can upgrade this to the cartridge to a super high end one, and that's one of the upgrades you can do and really notice a difference if you're so inclined versus the LP-60 where you're locked in with that AT3600L cartridge, which is a beginner cartridge, but not bad. And sort of a good middle ground is the LP-3 that we've, you know, been showing a lot of that white turntable because it has some of the features of this in terms of the adjustable counterbalance, anti-skate, you know, replaceable head shell, and still has that full automatic capability

Pricing back in the day vs now, manual, semi auto or full auto, and other features. Build quality, sound quality. Mk1/Mk2...
