 They've got that iconic black color with the white grill inside that Beyerdynamic is known for. When you're wearing these people are gonna know. The earcups themselves are oval in shape and have that sexy silver velour padding which are very comfortable and surprisingly they don't get that hot during extended gaming sessions which is what we're all looking for at the end of the day when we're gaming. The headband has a nice clamping force on it so you won't be snatching these off your head or when you're just moving around from monitor to monitor or during like an intense battle these are gonna stay put

 They aren't super wide when it comes to soundstage but they are wide enough to get the job done and then some. I had no problems placing my enemies in game and destroying them. So are these just a hype train fad or are they actually good gaming headphones? And I have to say these are very good headphones sprinkled with a little bit of hype but that doesn't change the fact that these are still really good headphones. You're getting that great bare dynamic build construction with comfortable velour pads that don't get hot over time

 Ohms is the power needed to power the headphones and most computers can't produce 250 ohms of power to these headphones which is why you need an amp to boost the signal. I'll be dropping some cheap amp options down below for you guys as well as always. I'm personally using the LocksJoy P20 which is around $80 and it can power these with no problem. Music wise though these are balanced studio headphones with a slight emphasis on treble which gives them that airiness that translate to being a good stereo gaming headset

 All in all the DT 990's are very good cans; they just aren't for me. Still I debated for quite a while as to whether or not I would keep them. But, in the end I decided I would send them back.  UPDATE: I didn't want to give up on Beyerdynamics, so the day after I returned these 990s I ordered a set of DT-880 Premiums

 With so many variables affecting peoples like or dislike of any pair of phones it is my goal to help those with similar musical tastes and similar gear to determine whether or not these headphones will be a good investment for them personally.  To that end; I listen to music in practically every genre. I tend to go through different phases, but I enjoy Mozart as much as Metallica, 80's one hit wonders and New Orleans Jazz, Lady Antebellum or Lady Gaga, Eminem to Zedd. Music has so much to offer in all genres that one could spend a lifetime discovering new things they like

 The 880 Premiums clamp A LOT lighter than the 990 Pros as well (super comfortable, though I could probably sneeze them off). In the end, I was glad I auditioned both sets, and even though the 880s are almost double what I got the 990's for I will be keeping them. I can see the appeal of the 990s, but still, for me they were just okay (and I'm talking sound wise only). Beyerdynamics makes some really nice cans, but a person needs to do their research to figure out which model will suit them best

 They are made very well and being able to replace any broken or worn part is a big benefit. I like the coiled cable and the plug with the screw-on ¼" adapter (though I wish it was detachable), and I think the phones are nicely styled. I wish the midrange had a bit more presence and that the phones had better dynamics (difficult with the subdued middle). The soundstage is very good, though it doesn't feel quite as wide as my HD 598s or 600's (at least to my ears)

They Just Didn't Do It For Me.

 Tuning-wise, it leans in the direction of the DT990, but it's just not as harsh. The treble spikes are nowhere near as big, and the bass, while it does still get a bit boomy, is tolerable. One thing this headphone does exceptionally well is directional imaging. You can hear exactly where sounds are coming from, but it has a bit more detail than things like the PC38X, so if you really already have a desktop microphone and don't want a gaming headset, well, there you go, Tiger 300R gaming headphones that also double as being pretty good for music

 It's easier to turn up to higher volumes, and it doesn't image quite as well as the other headphones on our list, but what it does do really well is detail, and it's just an easy headphone to use day to day. A lot of that detail is in the mid-range, and this headphone responds strongly to things like tube amplifiers, giving people an extremely enjoyable sound. I've had a 6XX for, I can't even tell you how long, but if I'm playing games, I would probably use the 560S instead. Do me a favor, gamers have been through a lot over the last few years, especially with the prices of graphics cards

 Well, this essentially gets up into that range and then goes off into space. This makes the headphones sound harsh. It makes it sound sibilant. It makes it sound sharp, but in a bad way

Yesterday I posted how I gave my friend from work my unused SHP9500. Here’s his response having never heard an open back before.

 Even so, they were still comfortable. When I noticed how flat they'd gotten, I purchased HM5 Velour memory foam pads (http://www.amazon.com/Brainwavz-Velor-Memory-Replacements-Earpads/dp/B00MFDX4YO/ref=pd_sim_23_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41RSWch-OBL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=14EJG9CAW7PPG9Z4H7WQ) and they fit fine (after some stretching) and feel great

Without an amp, these headphones actually worked alright for me using them on my computer as well as my phone, but I usually don't listen to things very loudly. With the SMSL SD793-II, these headphones absolutely sing

 There's definitely an emphasis on the bass/sub bass in these. For open headphones, these pull off an impressive amount of lows. It makes them great for electronic music like house, drum and bass, dubstep, etc as well as genres like rock and metal as the music feels full. Compared to Philips SHP9500's, which I believe have a pretty neutral and balanced sound, the DT990's sacrifice accuracy and detail for warmth and voluminous bass/sub bass

Fantastic headphones for pleasure listening and gaming

 You will need a separate amp for these, but I've found that if you have something like this college solo or the headamp 4, it will be more than enough and it will give you decent audio levels. Moreover, I've been using this headamp with my other budget headset and I can completely recommend it. Personally though, I think the sound from my AI is much crisper and sounds a lot better than the headamp. Other amps like the GoXLR which other streamers might have is more than enough to drive these

 They're studio grade open back headsets and I've had my eye on this for a while. Since they're open back headphones, these were specifically made for music production. And they didn't really have gaming in mind, but they give off a really great experience while you game. With the open back, you get a more broad and spatial sound in general

 Personally though, I think the sound from my AI is much crisper and sounds a lot better than the headamp. Other amps like the GoXLR which other streamers might have is more than enough to drive these. However, they are quite pricey, so if you're looking into this headset, find something more that is within your budget. But keep in mind that you might spend $80 to $150 on the amp

 There's great bass and treble balancing, which means that the bass isn't really overwhelming. There's a great tone between the bass and the treble. With the open back features, sound will be escaping from this headset. This means that while you're busy gaming or listening to music, anyone around you at a distance of around 1 meter will hear what's going on

 Most reviews describe this headset as very "technical" or "sterile" in that it does not add its own flavor or texture to the sound. That is exactly what I wanted, for jazz, classical, opera. And that is what these delivered. The clarity and soundstage are great

A neophyte's review

 I've EQ'd them with oratory1990's suggested settings. That in my opinion made them much more listenable for long periods, and also better suited for most of the games I play.
