The Canon EF-S 50mm f/1.8 STM will work very well and is extremely cheap, and give very nice out of focus backgrounds when needed. If you're shooting against a plain background or with your subject right up against a wall or something, you probably don't need the aperture to be wide anyway - try using a tripod, ISO 100, f/8 or higher, and as long a shutter time as is required to properly expose the shot.

I'm new to video shooting here. Just bought a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens and am blown away by how much cleaner and crisper it is than the 18-45 kit lens. Now when I edit footage I can tell the difference in lighting and video quality from the two lenses.

Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 STM is a great all around prime lens (fixed focal length). Great low light performance.

He even compares it negatively to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. That's a FULL FRAME lens, of COURSE it looks better on your full frame camera!.

I recommend the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. On your camera that will be a 1.6 x 50mm = 80mm full frame equivalent, which is right in line with the traditional 85mm portrait favorite.
