Should You Upgrade? NEW Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens Comparison

I am currently using an APS-C Canon DSLR.  I am looking to buy a zoom/telephoto lens since I don't currently own a lense in the longer focal length.  I am happy to buy used and have a max budget of around £600/$825.

I have narrowed it down to the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM and the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS ii USM lens.  

The condition of the lenses being equal if I buy used, the 70-200mm is about £120/$150 more expensive.  I intend to use it for punching into landscapes, wildlife and some sports.  

My main question is... Is the up in image quality and build quality of an L series lens worth the extra money? Or have I got it all wrong and there is a different lens I should be looking at?

Advice needed on Telephoto purchase

3 stars is for the weight and not superior image quality like people think. Ok so let me just say that I used this newer version III lens on my Mark 5d III and I am used to using my 100mm 2.8 IS L Macro fixed Prime Lens for pristine superior sharpness and quality images. I also use my L 24-105mm IS F4 as my zoom lens for everyday which also gives me pristine sharp quality images but my 100mm lens gives me more BANG since it’s a 2

  I was compare shooting with both my 100mm and the 70-200mm at a stadium to see the difference. My 100mm WAY outperformed the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L III in many ways. I have been asking my self Is it really worth the extra 100mm more distance to get to the 200mm zoom? and I wasn’t even getting the same superior images compared to my 100mm, in my opinion NO it’s not worth it, I sent it back and was actually glad to get rid of it

 Sorry I am just spoiled and know the difference. Many casual photographers (who are the majority of reviewing) don’t know the difference or even know how to tell the difference in the quality of images to compare what’s best and what isn’t, but I do. I sell stock photos so it’s important I only get superior very best quality sharp images with not any noise or artifacts at higher speeds and ISO. Now I am not saying you can’t get super great images that are stock photo sellable with this lens I am just saying a fixed lens gives superior images over this zoom lens

Not what I was expecting.. I guess I am spoiled with my Fixed lens

 So with today's sample shots we shot them on the Canon 5d mark 4 with a pre-production version of the 70-200mm f2.8 L mark 3. It's good to know that the quality of the mark 2 is still apparent in the mark 3. The lens produces super sharp photos it has quite a pleasing bokeh quality

8 throughout its whole focal length so you have a high control over depth of field as well as low-light performance. In terms of specs wise it houses a eight rounded blade aperture diaphragm which means that you'll get nice pleasing bokeh and with f2.8 you'll get nice separation and compression blur on top of that as well. In terms of the elements it's got one fluoride element and five low dispersion elements to help with color fringing and chromatic aberrations

 Optically there's nothing to complain about on the lens. From what I can see it boasts identical image quality to the mark 2 and I feel you would benefit from the extra asphere coating during days where the light is not so forgiving so the experience while shooting is a bit smoother. So my final thoughts on the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L mark 3

But IMHO, if the EF versions of these lenses were good enough for top quality professional reproduction a few years ago, they are quite good enough for my use. One more thing I'd mention, unless things have changed, the waiting period for the Canon EF -> RF adapters can be months; I put in a "alert" at B&H in January 2021 and finally was able to buy mine in March 2021.

Just got R6. Now RF or EF?

Good for portraits

 It weighs a lot but if you want that 2.8, that wide aperture, you want to be able to use it in low-light situations I think you got to go with the 2.8. I debated on the F4 but I just thought I'm in low-light situations often and I'm going to need that 2

 The images were sharp, they were clear, colors were great and it really did a great job of helping me capture good images of the kids during their First Holy Communion. Oh the other thing I forgot to mention is with video it helps stabilize your video. The image stabilization in this lens is awesome. It worked in every situation that I used and you can see it just pop in and stabilize that image as you're trying to focus either in video or in photo

 It was nice to be off to the side and this was your classic low-light situation and I've got some images going on the screen here that you'll see some samples and classic low-light situation I was at 3200 ISO on the Canon 5D Mark IV and primarily at 2.8 on this lens and it did a great job. The images were sharp, they were clear, colors were great and it really did a great job of helping me capture good images of the kids during their First Holy Communion. Oh the other thing I forgot to mention is with video it helps stabilize your video

 I needed to be at 3200 ISO in my Canon 5D Mark IV in order to get these shots. This room was kind of small although it looks bigger in the pictures but 70 was wide enough to get almost the whole stage in there and at 200 you could zoom in and get some nice shots of the speakers. So I was really impressed with how well it did. All the images came out sharp, I was primarily shooting at a shutter speed between 320 and 500 and I was really impressed with how well, how clear, how sharp these images came out and just the ability that I had to shoot in this low light situation

Canon 70-200 F/2.8L IS III Real World Review

Hi all, I’m looking for a higher end telephoto for my camera. I’m looking to do sports photography when my university opens back up again. It'd be nice if it had the length or flexibility with extenders to be useful for wildlife and more general photos but it’s not strictly required. I’m planning to start at a grand for the price, and can extend that if I need to. I’ve only looked at first party lenses bar the Tamron 100-400.

IS would be nice but it isn’t a hard need, I’m only looking at EF mount telephotos so I can use it on my current body (EOS M5). And if I need to upgrade it’ll work on a 7D II, or on a newer R body. Size isn’t an issue here, I have enough used stuff I could trade for a 50-200 or a 55-250 if I felt it was too big. I’m looking at several lenses (and have yet to get into third party offerings), and I’m aiming to knock it down to two or three to rent and decide from that. Here’s what I’ve looked at so far.

If it’s not long enough I can put it on an extender and still have a fairly bright aperture. Reviews speak highly of it, I’m thinking it’d be a great compliment to my 17-55.

That would be an issue if I go down that route.

Here’s the thing, they’re all 25 years old at the newest and I’d be worried about getting parts for this. I can deal with the weight, but I’d rather not be stuck with a paperweight if something breaks on this or it needs service. There are better options and it’s not advised to use an extender on it either.

I would appreciate some help picking out a tele lens for sports

 Used it tonight to shoot a rock band in a local venue--a fairly tough test--and I loved it. The photos came out looking great, sharp and crisp, despite shooting at ISO 3200 to 6400 (on a Canon 5D Mk IV). The autofocus was dead-on. 

 . but overall, I'm impressed with the new lens and am glad I replaced my aging and battleworn old one.

Subtly better than my old Mark II

5. Either way, the motor is going to work well, the motor is going to be very silent as this is an ultrasonic motor. The paint color on here, the Mark III, apparently it differs from the Mark II, don't know why people mentioned it, who cares? It's a great lens. I don't think anyone would care if it was painted yellow

 During the daytime, normal shooting or even indoor shooting, unless you're pointed directly at a light, in which case you'll probably get less lens flare because of the new coating on this thing, it's still the same great quality as the Mark II. If you can't afford to buy one right now, go to a camera store near you, ask them if they can let you rent one, if so, go out and shoot as much as you can with an indoor, outdoor, go out and create your own examples, just saying I cannot emphasize this lens enough. Now really the only thing that you probably don't want to do with this lens is film a close-up intimate dramatic scene, that just wouldn't make any sense, why you ask? Looks like some bizarre music video from Sprockets, see what I mean? So again, is this lens worth buying? Yes, this is one of the main lenses you should always have on you. If you like this video or if you like the intro, give it a thumbs up, subscribe if you haven't already, be excellent and I'll see y'all in the next one

 Comes with the lens hood, the inside material of this is just very nice. And you've got your tripod mount ring, which I would highly recommend when you attach the lens to your camera, attach this to the tripod, don't attach the camera to the tripod because it'll just get front heavy and you really don't want that, but this will make it perfectly, almost perfectly balanced. Now, examples, because we all want them. One of the best things I like about this lens, one of the main reasons I bought it, is if I'm shooting photos for theater, you got it, and if I'm standing in the very back of the house there, normally I'd be using the kit lens, extending it to 135mm, which would give me the f-stop of f5

 And even outside, a simple hike around a nature trail and just zooming in on something that caught my eye, here's the focal range at 70mm and now at 200mm. So it's a very nice and smooth compression and I think you're going to be really happy with it, you're going to get a lot out of it.
