Dell Latitude 7420

For example, I purchased two Dell latitude e5470's a few years ago (one for me, one for the wife). The keyboard can be swapped in less than 5 minutes, so I replaced mine for the backlit keyboard for $20. My wife dropped her machine and broke the bottom casing, which I replaced in 10 minutes for $15. I've replaced the batteries on both twice for $25 each over the course of 4 years.

It's his main work-from-home machine now and handles all the Zoom meetings and everyday computing just fine. The laptop also has a nice metal casing that would work well as a weapon.

A few days back I noticed the case was popping up - thought I was missing a screw. Turns out the whole battery is swelling, since (surprise surprise) the batteries aren't made as they were used to. Typing on it without a battery right now - I like having one in there in case of power outages - but buying a new one will set me back $60-70. Too soon to ditch this, but not happy with the Latitude's as of late.

I have a brand new Latitude 7420 and it has way too many flaws. Have you thought about getting a Thinkpad instead? I have one from 2015 and if it weren't for the reduced RAM and worse screen I would use it even more than my Latitude. I do not recommend the dGPU because the new Iris Xe is really good, I can even play PUBG with it.

Latitude 7420 is a toast - pretty warm and with almost everything soldered to a motherboard. I wouldn't buy it without at least 3Y warranty. Latitude 5420 is better in this case, but it can't take prolonged load - a strong throttling is applied after a minute or two of load (about 30% performance loss). Precision 7560 took prolonged load rather well and have probably the best touchpad in non-Mac devices.

** My Latitude can't go anywhere without its charging brick, which is a hassle. I need at least 8 hours of battery life to make it through a typical day; that's normally with light usage (web browsing, Word, text editors) and at medium brightness.

Recently (late last year) received a Latitude 7420 to replace a 5 year old Latitude e7270 which had a dead motherboard.
