I loved everything about it except for the plastic trackpad, which still felt sturdy/solid and had no 'wobble' (I'm looking at you, XPS 15 9500.) Temperatures are great, performance is fantastic, screen is fantastic, and is reasonably priced (if you can manage to nab it!) Battery life could be a bit better, but it does offer 100w USB-C charging which helps when I don't want to bring along the massive 300W brick!. I whole-heartedly give this machine a 9/10, an absolute 'buy'.

All of this is to say that the 2020 edition is one of our favorite desktop replacements, putting the XPS 15 back in the Editors' Choice seat for this class of laptop. The 2020 Dell XPS 15 is a near-ideal 15.6-inch desktop-replacement laptop

I ordered the XPS 15 9500 a couple days ago and it was literally the base model. i5 10300H. 8 GB Ram.

Is the XPS 15 actually bad?

No, the XPS 15 9500 that you see all the posts about is not actually bad. It had some initial build quality issues that are mostly resolved and people run into problem units here and there, but on the whole it's fine.

Before repasting, running any benchmark(CPU only) would peg the device at 100° and it would stay there the whole time. After repasting i ran the same benchmarks and found a 17% improvement in sustained performance and the max temp the CPU hit was 25° cooler at 85°C after 10 minutes of sustained stress testing. If you have the XPS 15 9500 this is a must and it will literally change the usability of the machine like night and day.
