 The Denon DP-400 turntable is built upon the popular DP-300F turntable. It comes with a 3-speed DC motor, auto stop function, and an S-shaped tone arm. With the built-in preamp, the DP-400 can be plugged into any aux input. If you want to use your own preamp, this function can be turned off via the equalizer switch located on the back of the turntable

The DP-400 is not a fully automatic turntable like the DP-300F, but it does have an auto stop function, which will lift up the tone arm and turn off the motor once the end of the record is reached.  Insert the head shell into the tip of the tone arm, then secure by turning the lock nut clockwise. Gently screw in the counterweight, the number dial facing the front of the turntable. Move the counterweight back and forth until the tone arm bounces or floats gently on top of the platter. Once you've successfully balanced the tone arm, return it to the tone arm rest, and without moving the counterweight, carefully rotate the number dial until the number 0 is in the 12 o'clock position

 Turn the power slash RPM knob to the desired speed, then raise the stylus cover on the cartridge. Now release the arm rest lock and raise the tone arm using the lifter lever. Then use the finger lift to place the stylus at the start position of the record. If you wish to disengage the auto stop function, locate the switch on the rear panel and make sure that it's in the on position

 Move the counterweight back and forth until the tone arm bounces or floats gently on top of the platter. Once you've successfully balanced the tone arm, return it to the tone arm rest, and without moving the counterweight, carefully rotate the number dial until the number 0 is in the 12 o'clock position. Then, rotate the counterweight to the recommended downforce of the cartridge, which is 2.0 grams

I've been eyeing several of Pro-Ject's turntable lineup and I couldn't decide between the T1 Phono SB, DC and Carbon EVO. My personal preference is a decent turntable (doesn't need to have the absolute best quality) but I would definitely like to upgrade down the line, especially when it comes to the cartridge and stylus. 

My other choices include the Fluance RT85 and Rega Planar 1. 

Also, is a built-in phono stage good? To me it seems it can save more space by having in built in, but several local record store owners advised me to get a separate preamp since a built in phono stage would be "shitty".

Any advice?

Best choice for a &lt;500 USD beginner turntable?

 You must remove the record and then place the dustcover back on every time you listen, which is disappointing and defeats the purpose of a dustcover in my opinion. I like for the record I was listening to last to be waiting for me. Second, if you pause the record mid-way because you want to flip sides early, the platter does not automatically stop. I'm used to sliding the needle back home and having the turntable stop automatically

I spent a great deal of time researching turntables. I had a Target Heyday turntable and knew it was time to upgrade as I've become a more avid listener. I knew I wanted to upgrade my cartridge to one from Ortofon, specifically the TTL exclusive 2M Silver Cartridge pre-mounted on Ortofon's SH-4 headshell. This was my deciding factor to go with the DP-400 model instead of the fully automatic DP-300F

 After having the player for a few weeks, there are a few things that I find disappointing. First, the dust cover. It's not the modern design, I don't mind that. It's that I cannot simply close the dustcover and go on about my day after listening to my record

 That is not the case here - it will continue to spin until you turn the knob to the off position. The sound is great! I'm unable to tell if that's due to the quality cartridge or the quality turntable, but it renders a lot more bass and creates a very enjoyable listening experience. It's just some of the convenience features that really make a difference to me and why this is a 4-star review. I was very intimidated by the setup process, however, it could not have been more simple!

 It was created in the studio at the time of the recording and is usually lost on digital recordings. This equalizer will reintroduce that ambience and feeling to the recording. Denon has given us a very good turntable with a lot of good features, and including 78 RPM it is a good buy. At the top end of our price point, but it is a quality machine

Denon DP-400 - Best Turntables Review

The speakers were a big purchase for me, but way more speaker than I could afford at retail, and they came out beautifully. They replaced my Infinity RS 6001 floorspeakers that I'd had for a decade; a good run.

 I'm therefore basing my review on both 450USB turntables, the black and the white.  I'll start with the cover. I can see that some people like it but to me that cover is enough of a nuisance to deduct a star. Here is why: 1, The cover does not protect from dust as it is open all around, so as a cover it's really not doing it's job

  Still, when it comes to the finish the white one IMO is preferable as the black turntable shows every speck of dust and fingerprint.  So overall this turntable isn't perfect but it's a very nice turntable with a unique wav recording function that made the difference to me when it came my purchase decision.  I am using an Ortofon stylus and headshell on it and it sounds nice. I don't think I have enough of an audiophile system or hearing to go into all the intricacies as to why this turntable sounds better than another, all I can say that I enjoy listening to records on it and love the ability to record my records for the road

 2, The cover must be completely removed and put somewhere else to play a record. I don't care at all about it's "display" feature. To me it's just something that is laying around unnecessarily when I play a record. 3, You can't just leave the record on the turntable when it's finished and have a closed cover over it

This is a nice turntable and the recording feature is a good thing to have. I first bought a black one used that turned out to have a defect so I then swapped it for a new white one. I'm therefore basing my review on both 450USB turntables, the black and the white.  I'll start with the cover
