Current state of the collection (TH900, HD800S, Eikon)

Excellent except for the hinge breaking EXTREMELY easily and no easy way to fix that.

Then, this happened a 2nd time when I sold my Fostex TH900 MK1 to buy a Fostex TH900 MK2 and I had no other audiophile headphones at the time, so I went back to my non audiophile headphones. That time period also drove me insane with the low quality sound. A similar thing happened to me for IEMs. Going from an audiophile sub $50 IEMs to Skullcandy or the off brand earbuds was a mistake that I will not repeat lol

Yup, I've had a pretty similar experience. To me, it's a case where once a headphone is competent, then any upgrades from it are minor. Any competent headphone will sound just fine. Like my current top headphone is the Stax SR-L700mk2 that has been extensively EQ'ed to fit my preference, but when I listened to the Aeon 2 Closed, even without the perforated pads that I installed later, they sounded fine. I think they sound better with the perforated pads, but even before that they didn't sound bad. When I got my Beoplay Portal as a general-purpose headphone, it also sounded fine. I could tell it was less clear than the Stax or the Aeon, but it sounded good enough that its technical weakness never interfered with my listening experience.

When I go back to my oratory-EQ'ed Sundara, it sounds fine as well. For casual listening while I'm working I wouldn't notice much difference between it and the high-end stuff that I have. The ATH-A990Z with brainwavz pads also sounds fine, in fact I like the Audio Technica Art/Air line's mid-boosted tuning.

In fact, even when going back to the HyperX Cloud Alpha that I keep at the office for calls, that sounded fine too. I could enjoy my music on that headphone too without feeling like I was missing out on something in the moment. If I'm not A/B testing things and looking for differences, most competent gear will sound good enough to me.

In contrast, the Resident Audio RS15, a cheap headphone that came bundled with the electric keyboard that my wife got, never sounded good to me or my wife. That thing falls below the bar of competence and never sounded good no matter how many times I revisited it.

When I went back to my old headphones, it sounded noticeably much worse, which eventually spurred me to try again years later as the low quality drove me insane. Then, this happened a 2nd time when I sold my Fostex TH900 MK1 to buy a Fostex TH900 MK2 and I had no other audiophile headphones at the time, so I went back to my non audiophile headphones. That time period also drove me insane with the low quality sound.

I have never been able to notice huge differences that reviewers rave about. I own headphones that cost 1000 dollars and headphones that cost 100 dollars and there is a difference, but way smaller than one could think.

Nope can't relate. I turned 18 and went straight to the Hd 800 so I didn't have to hear any trash and then work my way up.

Like when you're getting into the gear at first, having not found the piece that scratches that itch, you seem to exaggerate the smallest of differences between headphones/amps/dacs etc.

Anyone else notice they exaggerate the differences when starting out?

  The headphone is beautifully crafted, featuring Urushi lacquer cups (mesmerizing!), all hand made in Japan. The packaging and product presentation is luxurious, including a glamour brochure like that included with a new car. . 

 The V profile frequency response on these is wild, the bass is amazing but also the large cup size and detailed highs combine for an enormous soundstage for closed backs. I also have the TR-X00 Ebony from Massdrop, and although wonderful in their own right, can attest that the 1 Tesla variant simply can't quite muster the impressive force the TH900 brings to your ears.  I own many top tier headphones (electrostats, planar mags, balanced armature as well as an army of high impedance german dynamics). These are not the most accurate headphones I own, but they may be the most FUN, the most joyous

 I disagree with Fostex' description of these as a reference headphone - these are a STATEMENT headphone. Their aim is not accuracy, but curation, offering you a luxuriously selected spectrum on a platter. Joyous headphones - Experience your music with these

Recently purchased the Fostex TH900 MK2 brand new from Amazon for £1300. I am both impressed and unimpressed. These cans are very pretty, well made and they are pretty comfortable but I would have preferred a tighter clamp and slightly chunkier pads. As for the sound they are heavily V shaped, these have an excessive amount of treble and it's very fatiguing and harsh for me and its impossible to enjoy badly mastered music with these, they are not forgiving at all out of the box, they have pretty heavily boosted bass and while boosted it's very clean but does bleed into the mids a little, I would definitely class these as bass cannons of the good kind. Once you EQ down the treble you can crank the volume and they become very enjoyable and not much more sibilant that my Audeze LCD-2C which I find to be pretty sibilant. Compared to the LCD-2C they being out the details more which is no surprise and they do have smoother sounding treble which is less grainy, I find some female vocals to be quite grainy on the LCD-2C but this is not the case with the Fostex. Overall I enjoy them, while they do not sound as good as I hoped for £1300 these are "style cans". They are a work of art and I have no doubt a lot of money had gone into the build quality and the cups and lacquer which is made in house and include some silver and platinum, also everything is hand made and assembled so overall I would say you do get £1300 worth of headphones

Newest addition to my setup! Fostex TH900 MK2.

 I should add that with other combinations, namely, the Arcam FMJ UDP411 with the Arcam rHead Headphone Amplifier (using XLR connections) and the Pioneer BDP-88FD with the Musical Fidelity M1HPAP Headphone Amplifier, I did not notice any excessive treble. After replacing the stock ear pads with Dekoni sheepskin ear pads, I never encountered any excessive treble under any circumstances. Although recessed, the midrange is pleasant, detailed, and precise. Finally, the imaging is splendid, and the soundstage is espansive and enveloping

The Fostex TH-900mk2 possesses the signature v-shaped sound for which Fostex headphones are known, namely, sonic emphasis upon bass and treble. The bass is deep and sharp, yet controlled, and the treble is extended, clear, and refined. With the stock ear pads, the upper treble on occasion, though, can initially seem excessive when utilizing certain source components and headphone amplifiers, e.g

Fostex Signature Sound

I said I was done but oops I bought another headphone. I got this for a good price and I’ve never heard this, so here it is.

I understand why these have depreciated so much. These actually have a halfway decent FR from midbass to upper midrange, but the rest isn’t particularly good. I can’t believe these originally cost $1,799. 

I’ve messed with the tuning pads and settled with double stacking the white felts. Stock has a *painful* low treble peak—that’s coming from someone who isn’t bothered by the HD800’s or Grados’ treble at all. The bass port sticker doesn’t do enough to remove the midbass canyon at around 200Hz. I actually had to order the tuning kit because these didn’t come with it but since I was impatient, I tried messing with them first. I covered the bass port on the cups with micropore medical tape and made a .7mm hole in the middle. This decreased bass from 100-20Hz to make the bass more linear, but it sounds a lot less wrong than whatever the hell is going on here.

The grey foams sounded weird—upper midrange sounds more nasal with less body. Didn’t use them for long. Black foam tames treble a bit and upper midrange sounds a little less nasal, but still not great. White felt tames a little bit of the 1kish rise at the cost of dipping past 1kHz more than the others. Since the Ether C Flow 1.1’s timbre isn’t particularly good, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The quality of the sound doesn’t really change much with any of the tuning pads. I think the pads do make the sound a little more congested and dynamics sound less obvious, but I personally put FR over detail—if a headphone has a terrible FR but a lot of detail, I still don’t think I’ll be able to tolerate it much. In the Ether’s case, they weren’t really dynamic to begin with, so I’m not losing much with the pads. 

Bass isn’t very articulated. A lot of it just sounds like a mass of bass rather than separated bass notes. I remember having a similar problem with the open Ether Flow, so this might be the drivers. Bass impact also leaves me wanting—it’s elevated but sounds overdamped.

Midrange isn’t anything special either. I remember the original Ether C’s midrange was so bad I thought they were broken until I used another pair right after and they sounded the same. This isn’t nearly as bad, but it also doesn’t sound right. Midrange timbre sounds somewhat hollow and sounds like they emphasize sustain but cut decay too fast so it sounds disjointed. 

Treble is surprisingly harsh. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised since that’s probably what the Flow waveguides are doing. What’s annoying is that they have a sharp peak but they dip the rest of treble. This makes the low treble peak stick out and sound fatiguing pretty quickly.

I guess for a closed headphone this isn’t as abominable as a lot of the other options like the Z1R, HD820, and Elegia. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that, as Tyll said, an M50X will get you about 95% of the way to this.

White felt tames a little bit of the 1kish rise at the cost of dipping past 1kHz more than the others. Since the Ether C Flow 1.1’s timbre isn’t particularly good, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.</p>

<p>The quality of the sound doesn’t really change much with any of the tuning pads. I think the pads do make the sound a little more congested and dynamics sound less obvious, but I personally put FR over detail—if a headphone has a terrible FR but a lot of detail, I still don’t think I’ll be able to tolerate it much. In the Ether’s case, they weren’t really dynamic to begin with, so I’m not losing much with the pads. </p>

<p>Bass isn’t very articulated. A lot of it just sounds like a mass of bass rather than separated bass notes. I remember having a similar problem with the open Ether Flow, so this might be the drivers. Bass impact also leaves me wanting—it’s elevated but sounds overdamped.</p>

<p>Midrange isn’t anything special either. I remember the original Ether C’s midrange was so bad I thought they were broken until I used another pair right after and they sounded the same. This isn’t nearly as bad, but it also doesn’t sound right. Midrange timbre sounds somewhat hollow and sounds like they emphasize sustain but cut decay too fast so it sounds disjointed. </p>

<p>Treble is surprisingly harsh. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised since that’s probably what the Flow waveguides are doing. What’s annoying is that they have a sharp peak but they dip the rest of treble. This makes the low treble peak stick out and sound fatiguing pretty quickly.</p>

<p>I guess for a closed headphone this isn’t as abominable as a lot of the other options like the Z1R, HD820, and Elegia. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that, as Tyll said, an M50X will get you about 95% of the way to this.</p>

LCD 2 closed back and LCD XC (2020 model) actually good closed back headphones and have better tuning than their open back counterparts. If you can withstand the weight and bulkyness they should be decent choice to have closed back but high end sound.

Ether C Flow 1.1: 5% Better than an M50X

 To my ears, these headphones are amazing. I used the with ifi idsd black series and xdp100r as a USB transport. All hd tracks. It's insane

I've seen several other posts on this, but they're a little old so none of them include the Verite Closed. Are there other closed backs that compete with stuff like the Verite C and Stella?
