 Compared to the Hi-Fi Man Sundara, you know, if you want a more reference neutral kind of sound, I don't think there's really any headphone better than the Sundara at that. That is basically as neutral as it gets, as reference as it gets at the $350 price point. So if you like that neutral reference kind of sound, the Sundara is going to be the better pick. Just keep in mind that with the Sundara, you absolutely do need an amplifier of some kind to get the most out of it

 And I know that's a bit of a question mark there as far as the objectivist crowd goes. But honestly, if you try it, you'll know what I'm talking about. And running it off of some of these crazy amplifiers, I do think the detail ends up being better on the HD6 series. Now running the HD650 off of an amplifier source that would be competitive with what the price point for the Zeus would require

 Now, thankfully, you get full cup swivel. It's more just sort of fixing that little bit bloated lower mid to bass ratio there and then making it so that that treble is a little more filled in and even, but even that is more just an option. I think it's not a requirement. Okay, let's do some comparisons now

 All right, so let me give a conclusion here. Is the Harmonic Dyn Zeus worth it? At $350 or $300, where it ends up being, if you already own an amplifier, the Hi-Fi Man Sundara is going to still be the better choice, especially if you're looking for a more reference kind of sound. But if you aren't looking for a reference kind of sound, or if you're a little bit apprehensive about buying an amplifier, or spending the extra $200 to get it, and this is kind of where you max out as far as your budget is concerned, yeah, this is a ton of fun. I'm actually really surprised at how much I like this headphone, especially after my EQ, and yeah, I do absolutely recommend it

HarmonicDyne Zeus Review - A new mid-fi contender under $350?

I'm sure we've all made blunders in our audio  journeys, as well as come across unexpected surprises, and I always find it fun to discuss. Here are mine:

**Most regretful:** tie between the Shure SE425, or (and please don't stone me to death for this one) the Moondrop Aria. SE425 just didn't have the tonality I'm after (I prefer a V/U, and the SE425 is super flat with everything sub-250 removed) - although I will say it's the best "sleeping IEM" I've come across for fit and isolation. Aria sounds fine, but was just very overhyped and I didn't find it that impressive. I have loads of other $40 chifi that I prefer over the Aria, so it was an unnecessary purchase.

**Biggest surprise:** Hifiman/Drop HEX4. As a total bottom-budget planar, I wasn't expecting to get much out of it, it was more of a novelty purchase as I hadn't heard a planar before. It's become one of my favorites - with a bit of EQ it sounds fantastic for my preferences and music tastes, and it is the only headphone I can wear for extended periods without hotspots on the top of my head.

What are your most regretful headphone/earphone purchase, and your most pleasantly surprising, and why?

After the total fiasco the GL2000 was for me (thanks for that Zeos Pantera) I was very dubitative about purchasing this vastly hyped chi-fi headphone but since some exigent reviewers online say is pretty good I decided to give it a go.  Well, unlike the previously mentioned this is a good headphone. Problem is the box still better than the cans, which are very comfortable (their best asset) but soundwise are not exactly great for the price.  Sound is pleasant but too rolled off in mid-bass and some other frequencies

Bass is ok but nothing special as I was told, trebble is not as shouty and annoying as the one in the GL2000 but the timbre doesn't sound too natural either and the overall sound signature makes them more a can that should be in the 150 to 200 euros tier than sold by the 400 euros they cost me

Good but not great

 There's going to be a review coming on this amp in the near future, but I want to get some tubes in first because I want to roll tubes on it and talk about that experience with the review. But you could drive these off most things. If you already have an amp, you're fine. They are relatively transparent to the sound of the amp

 This is what they came in. I feel like this is the proper way to ship a headphone. Okay, let's talk about these things. Let's talk about build, comfort, sound, amp pairing, what I think of them all across the board

 I've really enjoyed them with the A90, though they certainly don't need the amount of power the A90 puts out. And like I said, I've also really enjoyed them with the Dark Voice. So who is this for? This is a headphone for someone who wants an addition to their collection, or you just want a daily driver and you don't particularly care about mixing or a studio sound. You just want something that's very spacious, fun, and lifelike as far as a sense of space is concerned

Concert-Hall On Your Head! HD ZEUS - Review

On the Zeus, it felt like the bass gain was even stonger, while everything still stayed absolutely clean. I'm really happy with the HarmonicDyne Zeus.

Got my first pair of open backs and I couldn't be happier!

I don't see what all the fuss is about

4mm to 3.5mm adapter in the packaging. The carrying case is quite bulky and seemingly unnecessary. The case is not travel friendly and I do not think it is made of premium materials

 If you like gentle treble and smooth vocals, then the Zeus might sound pleasant to you. However, if you like more neutral presentation, then the Zeus may sound dark and unexciting. $350 is a lot to ask for this headphone. I question this price tag

 I compared the Zeus to the Sundara HD 6XX and Sivka Phoenix. All four of these headphones sound rather different. The Sundara, for example, has a greater sub-bass roll-off but is closer to neutral in the mid-bass. The Sundara has greater sibilance and grain and more neutral treble

To The Point: HarmonicDyne Zeus

Hipdac: got this cause my e10k was draining my laptop battery too quickly. Pretty happy with it, and I like that it has the 4.4mm jack for my Zeus. e10k: sounds fine, but if you have any decent laptop/MOBO I’m not sure it’s really worth buying (I don’t regret it since I got it cheap used tho)

Ya’ll ruined my wallet…. A Mini-Review for each of my (too) many audio purchases:

I’ve bought and/or owned the following headphones: HE400i (2016), HD600, HD560S, X2HR, Harmonicdyne Zeus, HD300 Pro, k361BT, k371, SR50BT, M50xBT, Jabra 85h & 85t, Moondrop Starfields & B2 Dusk, and Dunu SA6. 
Here are my thoughts:

Hifiman 400i: This, alongside the HD600, were my first open back audiophile pairs. Both sounded good but I found the frequency response on the HD600 more smooth and pleasing, and overall liked it slightly more. *however* at this time my only amp was the e10k, so in hindsight I may have liked it more had I owned a better amp back then. 400i has since been sold.


HD600: Great, but the bass extension was really lacking for my preferences. For my tastes, I like the 560S slightly more in virtually every way. I sold this after I got the 560S. 


HD560S: basically my go-to open back headphones. I usually EQ a bass boost below 80hz or so, but aside from that I love everything about them. Good detail, imaging, soundstage… good everything to my ears. 

P.S. pisses me off Senn includes only 1 cable, it’s 9ft long and not 3.5mm, and they add a proprietary locking mechanism just to make it extra hard to get a shorter 3rd party replacement cable 🙄


Harmonicdyne Zeus: my first open back pair which has bass that really impressed me. These are also incredibly comfortable on my head, and with EQ (I use a warmer variation on Oratory’s) they sound really excellent imo. Without EQ they have too much upper bass for my tastes.

Side note, I like that they come with a balanced cable, but the 4.4mm to 3.5mm adapter they include is huge and bulky. And when I want to use it with an amp like the Heresy, I worry about completely snapping the 3.5mm adapter if I were to accidentally put any weight on it. Not ideal.


X2HR: Comfortable, feel sturdy and well built. The treble is a little inconsistent but I found they sounded really great with Oratory’s EQ. That being said, I’d say the Zeus + EQ is an upgrade in every way (except for maybe build durability). My girlfriend now uses these as an upgrade to her Beats when she’s at home. 


HD300 Pro:
Sound fine, nothing super impressive to me but they’re pretty inoffensive. 

Feel very durable and well built, and on my head they are super comfortable. I haven’t used the DT770, but from what I’ve heard I can see these being a good alternative if you want something durable and well built (but warmer).

I primarily used them as a digital-piano headphone, but I plan to sell them since my k371 finally arrived after 2+ months of waiting. 


K371: Very balanced sound, technicality wise they don’t sound super impressive to my ear, but I like the them a bit more than the HD300 Pro nonetheless. Def don’t feel as well built tho, and the isolation is kinda lacking on my head. I’d usually take my B2 Dusk over these (altho of course these are cheaper). 


k361bt: My second least favourite headphones on this entire list. I returned them. I found them to be a pretty big downgrade from the k371, a downgrade from the SR50bt, and even a downgrade from the m50xBT (especially if you EQ the m50x to have less recessed mids). I know DMS likes these which is why I tried em out, but these sounded bad enough that I’m almost wondering if I got a bad unit 🤷‍♂️


ATH-ANC900BT: My first least favourite pair on the list. I found the sound quality was closest to my Jabra Elite 85h, but they were not as well built, not water resistant, had inferior noise canceling, and had loud white noise at all times (even with noise cancelling disabled). 

I returned these and wouldn’t recommend them when the 85h is better in every way imo.


SR50bt: this was an odd one. They sound really good in my opinion, sound is fast and has good punchy bass. More balanced Frequency Response to my ear than the M50x (and more comfortable).

The problem? 2/3 pairs I’ve tried have a high pitched ringing in the right ear. This is likely due to poor quality control on the internal amp or something. My mother couldn’t hear the ringing at all so the pitch must be high enough that older listeners won’t notice it. But for me, it was a dealbreaker. Returned. 


M50xBT: uncomfortable on my head. Pretty unbalanced frequency response. 
But for short listening sessions and/or with some EQ, I think they sound pretty good. I ended up selling mine but I can see some people being really happy with these. I’d still take em over the k361bt. 


Jabra Elite 85h: great all-rounders. Very comfortable, decently balanced sound, good noise cancelling, water resistant. They don’t sound exceptional but I’d recommend them nonetheless.


Elite 85t: probably the worst sounding headphones/earbuds I still own, but I like them a lot anyway. 
Great battery life, comfortable in my ear, good noise cancelling, somewhat balanced sound, water resistant, and super portable. 


Moondrop Starfield: They didn’t really stay in my ears too well, and I was also paranoid of chipping the finish, but for the price I’d say they’re a strong option if they fit your ears better than mine. They don’t sound as good as any of my over-ears imo, but I suppose I shouldn’t expect them to at the price.


Moondrop Blessing 2 Dusk: My favourite closed back pair I’ve tried.
They fit my ear incredibly well, and the sound signature is almost perfect imo. They weren’t as big of a jump over the Starfield as I was hoping, but I like them a lot and don’t regret the purchase. 


Dunu SA6: Strangely enough the cable, despite all the praise it gets, was my biggest issue with these. It’s simply too heavy and I found that extra weight made them constantly uncomfortable. They always felt like something was lightly tugging them out. 

Aside from the cable, the shape is super comfortable, and the sound is pretty great from what I can tell. At least on par with he B2 Dusk, but I need to listen to this pair more to develop my thoughts.



AMPS & DACS:
Heresy, Ifi Hipdac, e10k, BTR5, and Qudelix 5k.

Heresy: sounds great, but not sure any of my headphones really need this much power. I can’t really hear a difference between this and my Hipdac tbh (or at very least, neither sounds *better*). 

Hipdac: got this cause my e10k was draining my laptop battery too quickly. Pretty happy with it, and I like that it has the 4.4mm jack for my Zeus. 

e10k: sounds fine, but if you have any decent laptop/MOBO I’m not sure it’s really worth buying (I don’t regret it since I got it cheap used tho). Currently just using as DAC for my Heresy. 

BTR5: not a big fan tbh. Scratches easily, battery life is behind the 5k, EQ Features are lacking (can’t save multiple presets), app is terrible. Sounds good but I still sold mine.

Qudelix 5k: aside from not having a screen, I like it more than my BTR5 in virtually every way. Great app, slightly better battery life (i think anyway, havent done any formal testing, but I run it in performance mode and still lasts a while), sounds about as good to my ear, and I like that it has a clip built onto it instead of an extra case. 

Sucks that it’s not widely available in Canada but I’d recommend it nonetheless.

Great battery life, comfortable in my ear, good noise cancelling, somewhat balanced sound, water resistant, and super portable. 

Moondrop Starfield: They didn’t really stay in my ears too well, and I was also paranoid of chipping the finish, but for the price I’d say they’re a strong option if they fit your ears better than mine. They don’t sound as good as any of my over-ears imo, but I suppose I shouldn’t expect them to at the price.

Moondrop Blessing 2 Dusk: My favourite closed back pair I’ve tried.
They fit my ear incredibly well, and the sound signature is almost perfect imo. They weren’t as big of a jump over the Starfield as I was hoping, but I like them a lot and don’t regret the purchase. 

Dunu SA6: Strangely enough the cable, despite all the praise it gets, was my biggest issue with these. It’s simply too heavy and I found that extra weight made them constantly uncomfortable. They always felt like something was lightly tugging them out. 

Aside from the cable, the shape is super comfortable, and the sound is pretty great from what I can tell. At least on par with he B2 Dusk, but I need to listen to this pair more to develop my thoughts.

AMPS &amp; DACS:
Heresy, Ifi Hipdac, e10k, BTR5, and Qudelix 5k.

Heresy: sounds great, but not sure any of my headphones really need this much power. I can’t really hear a difference between this and my Hipdac tbh (or at very least, neither sounds better). 

Hipdac: got this cause my e10k was draining my laptop battery too quickly. Pretty happy with it, and I like that it has the 4.4mm jack for my Zeus. 

e10k: sounds fine, but if you have any decent laptop/MOBO I’m not sure it’s really worth buying (I don’t regret it since I got it cheap used tho). Currently just using as DAC for my Heresy. 

BTR5: not a big fan tbh. Scratches easily, battery life is behind the 5k, EQ Features are lacking (can’t save multiple presets), app is terrible. Sounds good but I still sold mine.

Qudelix 5k: aside from not having a screen, I like it more than my BTR5 in virtually every way. Great app, slightly better battery life (i think anyway, havent done any formal testing, but I run it in performance mode and still lasts a while), sounds about as good to my ear, and I like that it has a clip built onto it instead of an extra case. 

Sucks that it’s not widely available in Canada but I’d recommend it nonetheless.

Ya’ll ruined me…. A Mini-Review for each of my many audio purchases:

I really wanted to like these headphones but the sound just wasnt there, for me they felt muddy and I didnt care for the sound all that much. At $200 bucks I would say yea go for it but not at this price point. Comfort was great but the sound just didnt quite cut it.

Not Worth $400

I got my HarmonicDyne Zeus in a while ago now and forgot to ever really share them on here. i absolutely love this headphone in terms of tonality and comfort. It resolves well but not as well as a Sundara which is the same price but the pads are AMAZING and it has a rich warm sound that i can't help but love. These are a great pair for someone like me who tends to like more fun sounding headphones instead of overly analytical and "neutral" headphones
