I recommend this [Hoover WindTunnel Max $151. Hoovers are quite capable carpet cleaners and the WindTunnel Max has 7 height position adjustment for carpets and brushroll shutoff for hard floors.

The suction and airflow at the cleaner head are some of the highest I have ever seen and the units are quite well built for the price especially. If you have long hair in the house, definitely cut it off the brush roll every so often. At around 20 pounds, this unit is decently heavy and some users complain about a short hose, but the weight has never been an issue for me, you get used to the hose, and the incredible cleaning performance makes up for the drawbacks in my opinion. This would definitely be one to consider.

On a lot of the other models, there is no way to stop the brush roll from spinning, so they tend to kick larger debris at your feet and not clean as effectively. You should not have that issue with the one I linked.
