 This is a full on backpacking micro filter that you can take with you into the backcountry so you always make sure that you have great drinking water that's going to keep you away from all the nasties that get into your stomach and into your intestines that's going to really give you a hard time. Alright so this sucker weighs in at just a little over 11 ounces and it's a pump filter so what I'm going to do is I'm going to get this thing out of the box, I'm going to flip my camera around just so you can see what I'm doing and then we'll get it outside and I'll pump some nasty water and drink it in front of you so I can show you how well this thing works. Alright so here's the Hiker Pro Micro Filter from Katadyn and I'm going to get this thing out of the box here, opens up really nice I like the presentation here it's really professional and it makes you feel good about the product that you're buying so it kind of just goes over everything that's in here, it has the micro filter, easy to fill bottle adapter which is great, it's got a long hose, hydration connector so you can connect this thing to hydration bladder, makes it super easy to refill your bladder on the go. It also has quick connect fittings, has a carry bag and some lubricants so that's really cool

 Let's see what we've got in here, this is the goodie bag, there's all of your owner's manual stuff and I'm sure little disclaimers, tells you what kind of replacement cartridge you're going to need to have and all of that. So this is your use and care manual supplement, that's kind of cool, kind of gives you everything right here and then here's the filter itself so I'm going to set that off to the side, first off I want to see what's in this bag here. Katadyn labeled too you know branded, they didn't have to label the bag but they did that's pretty cool. So you've got a sponge right here, cleaning sponge, here's your silicone lubricant, keeps all your parts working fine, here's your pre-filter and your bobber, that's kind of cool, set that off to the side, we have an extra long hose here and inside this zipper bag which is outlet hose, so there's your hose, there's your bottle adapter, so that's good for your now jeans or your you know sports bottles, you have a couple of quick connect adapters that are replacement parts, there's your release, this little guy goes in here just like that, you can push that to release it, comes with two of those and the female, I don't want to lose those, you have a sponge, you have your outlet hose so that's and then your all this other stuff which is great is that you can keep it all in here and it's a ziplock bag so it's going to keep everything nice and keeps the rest of your stuff in the pack nice and dry so you don't need to you know bring this or get out and run the risk of getting everything else wet and here's your filter right here, you have this little guy that comes off, this should unscrew just like so, open this up all the way, there's your filter right here, set this off to the side, get a little closer to the camera just so you can see it but there's your microfilter right there, nice solid o-ring that goes around the outside here, very well made so that goes in there, makes things super easy to clean too when you get it all like this and just snug this down, it locks in place and then that's how you would work your filter just like that, when you're done you kind of slide that over to the side, wrap your hose around it and you're good to go, this little nipple right here puts it over there so you don't get any dirt and grime down into the filter which is great, so on the bottom of the filter here what you want to do is you want to get your hose, one of the hoses, probably the longer one and you kind of stick it on this little guy right here, you kind of just work this in until it's all set and ready to go, it's going on pretty smooth for me but if it gives you trouble you could always use some of that silicone, now that's in place, you're good, as I said that's the in, so then at the bottom here is what you're going to add your pre-filter, alright here's the strainer barb right here and the weight and this thing goes through here just like that and that's where you would put your hose in but before you do that you need to put on your foam slider here and this is how you're going to adjust the distance on how far, it's basically the floater of how far the filter, the pre-filter needs to go down into the water, so that's pretty cool but I'm going to get this thing on here, so what I'm going to do is now that that's in place I'm going to go ahead and get the strainer barb and the weight put onto the hose and what you do is you basically just kind of work that from side to side, alright so I'm going to put a little bit of lubricant around the, just the top piece here, you don't need much just a little bit, see that, I'm just going to kind of move that around just like that and then we're going to get the hose on here and that should make the hose slide on nice and easy, so what you do is you adjust the floater right here depending on how deep you need the strainer barb and the weight to go into the unfiltered water, so that's kind of cool, so we're going to go and get this thing outside and I'm going to filter some pretty nasty water and then we're going to drink it

Alright guys so that's my review of the Katadyn Hiker Pro micro filter, as I said this is from Katadyn, here's their website right here, definitely want to make sure you check these guys out, these guys are making a lot of nice water filter solutions for taking into the back country so you always have clean drinkable water with you in the back country and stuff that's not going to make you sick so keep you out of harm's way, it's priceless

Katadyn Hiker Pro Micro Filter Review

First time backpacking, hitting Tin Cup Trail for three days. Roast me...oops, I mean how is my setup? Not pictured is Magma 15 bag and Half Dome 2 Plus tent.

 Took care of it, but I have been slightly dissapoined to have to have field cleaned it twice on separate trips since then, which is easy enough to do as the filter screws out of the pump, but still, as I have been careful to use the cleanest water possible and prefilter with a bandana, that it seems to have been pumping more difficultly. Water tastes pretty good after filtering however, so four stars for that. Overall, probably works pretty good comparatively. Haven't had the clog problem with my Sawyer (yet) however

 The Katadyn filter does a great job filtering water, it takes care of anything bad I will ever encounter on my trips in North America, and I am sure it would be fine anywhere in the world, trusting the manufacturer. The size and weight are acceptable. Any bigger and it wouldn't work for my preference. It is fairly easier to use, however I did have some problems with the filter getting clogged

 If it gets kind of brown and grungy looking, it'll start from the bottom and kind of work its way on up to the top, then you know it's time to change the filter. Simply discard the old filter, put a new filter in, screw it down, you're good to go. Some of the advantages of this filter over iodine tablets or the UVA lights and things like that are that you can take water out of a mud puddle, like if you're in the desert with this little hose, you don't have to get the water into your bottle before you sterilize it, plus it makes the water clean and taste well, unlike some of the iodine tablets. Some people don't prefer the taste of that, so if you're looking for a really quick and easy and relatively inexpensive way to filter water, definitely check out the Cata9 Hiker

 It will allow you to put it in the water and keep it at a higher level, and keep it away from impurities or the lower level. It's got another hose that comes out the top. This is where the actual filtered water comes out to you, and a pump, and that's basically it. So you have the hose going in the water, and the other hose that's coming out to you, into your bottle, into your filter, or whatever you want to put it in, and then you simply just use the pump to push your water through the filter system, and this particular system takes most everything out, takes about 99% of all the impurities out, including cysts and giardia and microbes and things like that

 So today, one of the things we're going to be talking about is the Katadyn Hiker Water Filter. Katadyn Hiker Water Filter is a really super easy, lightweight water filter, and can be used in a variety of different circumstances. Basically what happens is, you have the main housing filter, and it's got a hose, an end hose, and an out hose. The end hose has a little external filter on it, which will take out the debris like leaves and silt and things like that, and it's got like a little float on it that you can actually move up and down, so if you want it to be higher or lower, kind of like a barber on a fishing line

GEAR REVIEW: Katadyn Hiker Water Filter

I am but a humble poor, working on the slow upgrade process. Ridicule and lol.

 The company needs to do something about this ... as everyone knows we pay a ton for hiking gear first and foremost for RELIABILITY

Well, this is compact and well functioning filter, good for 1-2, maybe 3, people. Here's the problem, actually two problems: (1) the replacement filter (and you will need one if you are an "occasional" hiker) costs almost as much as the new device (which is not exactly cheap), (2) there are numerous horror stories about replacement filters (made by the same company! not some sort of counterfeit stuff) getting clogged after 10 gallons, screwing you royally pretty much on the 1st hike. The company needs to do something about this .

Getting a replacement filter is a scary thought

 You can then wipe down the outside to get a better flow rate out of the unit. The translucent outer shell makes it easy to see when the filter may be gunked up and ready for some cleaning. I have been using my Hiker Pro filter on the same cartridge for quite a few years now. These things can filter somewhere in the realm of 750 liters of water, so they last a pretty long time

9 percent of bacteria and sediment and protozoa. So you don't have to worry about cryptosporidium, Giardia, E. coli or any of that stuff. Having used this in water down in West Virginia's New River Gorge and also out in multiple areas of Wyoming and Utah, that filter definitely works

I just scrolled through the other huge thread on water filtering and was amazed at how unanimous it was towards the Sawyer squeeze.

I'm a full on UL minded hiker- my tent has no poles and is supported by my hiking sticks, my sleeping bag is a quilt, every gram is scrutinized, etc.

A huge weight savings for me was switching from a traditional pump water filter to a Sawyer squeeze. It was nice... while it lasted. I broke some bags, backflushed a bunch, and on my last trip the squeeze totally blocked so I just went with my trusty Katydyn on the next trip. 

I have a trip planned next week. I had a new Sawyer mini laying around (I know the worst one) and decided I'd try a gravity setup this time around. Seemed like everyone on the internet has had luck with their conversions. So I bought all the necessary tubing, adapters and dirty bag- and the best I can do is about 1 liter per hour with clean tap water. This is not gonna cut it in the UT desert, with silty water, for my GF and I. 

I could buy another squeeze or something else but honestly I see the same complaints with every other similar filter. Once I added all the attachments, the syringe, the dedicated dirty bag it is lighter... but not enough for me to justify anymore.

My Katydyn is a tank and it's 12+ years old and it functions perfectly. I actually like how efficient it is and I have 0 problems pumping water.  My only gripe about it is the weight. Anyone else go back to pumping water? or is it just me

Thinking of going back to a regular old heavy pump water filter... thoughts?

 I spent a long time trying and failing to gently pull and wiggle the hose off, very concerned that I was gonna’ snap off the barb and destroy the filter almost immediately upon receiving it. I eventually hit upon the idea of using a small crochet hook that I happened to have around the house to prise the hose from the barb, which worked fairly well - but I don’t usually carry crochet hooks while backpacking. Numerous other reviewers here describe their actually having the barb snap off while out in the woods, as would obviously often occur, leaving them stranded totally without clear water. A literally very possibly fatal design defect

  Other than that - and that is a heckuva’ lot - this Katadyn Hiker is a pretty good filter, better in almost all respects than almost all the many competitors. It’s reasonably compact, reasonably lightweight, easy to use, pumps easily and well; and - except for the needlessly fragile input barb, as noted above - seems strong and robust. Their customer service seems very good.  So how to rate this Katadyn Hiker filter? On an absolute scale, I would have to say that this water filter that fails to remove all pathogens - namely viruses - when a readily available competitor (General Ecology’s First Need) does - and has a critical weakness like the input connector barb described above, I would have to say that this filter isn’t really even in the running

Doesn’t remove all pathogens

 And that easily tucks away into this storage sack they are including here. You also see the other sack is called outlet hose. So basically this is going to be your dirty hose and the outlet hose is going to be your clean hose. You don't really want to get whatever sort of microorganisms and bacteria might be on that one that came from the creek on the clean hose

 This is for the plunging mechanism. You just need to kind of dab a couple of bits there to keep this flowing smoothly when it starts to feel a little stiff or like it is scraping. Other thing you just want to do is when this is not in use, when it has been wet and you filtered water, you want to unplug that cartridge for long term storage. You want it to be completely dry before you do stow it away for long term storage

 We are going to take a look at the Katadyn Hiker micro filter. This is a light weight back packing, water filtration option and it is a micro filter so it will remove bacteria, giardia and cryptosporidium from your water. It is not a purifier and will not remove viruses. Capacity for the Hiker is going to be about 200 gallons and that really depends upon the quality of water that you are filtering
