When both pairs of speakers were added as surrounds, somehow the Fives just blew away the 1's at all volume levels. For the 1st time, we could hear sounds and instruments from our back that we didn't hear with the 1's. With much more overall clarity.

I liked how the fives produce all the sound on their own so no matter where you are in the room, the sound feels more even with bass, mids and treble all originating from the same place. This is also a reason I prefer two fives over two ones and a sub.

Are there any active bookshelf speakers under $500 that can beat Edifier s2000 Pro / MKIII?

For a bit more money, you can test speakers with more lively presence like Klipsch “The Fives” ($700). For all the boxes checked, then the $$ well-reviewed Buchardt a500 for $3500. They will give you presence, depth, warmth and soundstage much better than the Edifiers. But your probably right, they have the $500 market well controlled.

The gains were honestly huge. The Fives sound miles better than the Ones. Ones are great for listening to music at a low volume, or for podcast or in small rooms but if you have a large space and the budget the Fives sound amazing.
