Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 Review

I need somewhere to vent this.

I'm done recommending Thinkpads to people. They may still be decent computers, but it seems like Lenovo is on a straight and steady path from mediocrity to complete incompetence.

Vantage has a "Feature" that basically tells you your computer has tons of "problems" and can "fix" them for you if you pay Lenovo to do so. It doesn't say what the problems are, or give any legitimately useful information at all. It's a scam, and the fact that Lenovo will stoop so god damn low to get a recurring revenue stream from unwitting customers is indicative of how utterly careless they are. I didn't buy it, and I'm still pissed.

My X1 Extreme Gen 3 just got a driver update through *Windows* update for the GPU, which had been running on ancient drivers from 6 months ago. I'd love to have more up to date drivers but every time I try and download them directly from NVidia, they seem to conflict with something and start making the CPU turbo constantly on battery power, making the machine run hot and draining battery life. I've confirmed this with several different versions of non-lenovo drivers.

Speaking of battery life... I'm not sure how anyone can keep their battery healthy. I've had the battery conservation setting turned on, and I have the machine shut off when it reaches 15%, which it rarely, if ever does. and I'm still down almost 10% in battery capacity according to Batteryinfoview as well as vantage.

I can't undervolt the damn CPU either. I know there are some vulnerabilities that got patched out by disabling the feature to undervolt, but not only is this a PC, it's a Thinkpad. You know, the computer that you can tinker with and repair because it's so modular? Oh yeah, nevermind, I was thinking of the IBM machines that I worked on a few months ago.

For the most part, I like my X1E, and my L380 Yoga has a name (Toast) and a special place in my heart, meaning I will never sell him.

But Let's be real here. I know this subreddit is supposed to be a celebration of all that is good about thinkpad, and I'm probably going to get crucified, but I'm done with Lenovo. From the swapped Fn and Ctrl keys that you need to un-swap through the adware that is their *official* support software, to their newer models that have the ram soldered directly onto the motherboard. Lenovo will likely continue this ass-itry because diehards and businesses will keep buying thinkpads regardless of how much they start to resemble the non-repairable, soldered RAM machines they think they're avoiding.

It's like they don't care about making a good product, and I think that's because people don't care about buying a good product. They just see "Thinkpad" and go, "Ooh, that's a sturdy machine itellyouwhat".

But I'm rambling now.

Please Lenovo. I love my X1 Extreme, I love Toast. the hardware is great. but the software is garbage and you're even trending away from good hardware. Please take a good look at yourself and do better.

And to my friends on r/thinkpad, please be gentle. I know I'm criticizing the cult leader, so feel free to punch me but please... not the face.

<div class="md">EDIT: I just wanted to give an update. I&#39;ve gone through a few laptops since writing this up; An Alienware 15r4, Legion 5, and Macbook Air with M1. And would you believe it, I&#39;m back to the X1E3.

To be honest, I had no idea how much I&#39;ve been taking for granted. This machine does exactly what I need it to do, and it does it admirably. And the only thing standing in the way of it doing so was DRIVERS.

To anyone who is running an X1E3, and having weird idle thermal/power consumption issues, CHECK YOUR NVIDIA DRIVER. The current Lenovo certified driver is 27.21.14.5266. If it is anything else on your device manager window, then this may be causing those issues. Yes, you will need to run an outdated driver, and yes, this will cause some issues with newer games (Only one I found so far was Psychonauts 2), but it&#39;s better than killing your battery and running your fans all the time.

As a PSA, Windows will update this GPU driver automatically to a non-lenovo supported version, you will need to disable automatic updates in windows through the registry.

(I believe it&#39;s been draining power because of the feature that allows usb devices to charge while the machine is off. Disable this, and it should at least keep your battery from draining while the machine is off and not in use, which helps with overall battery health.)

Edit: Thank you all for the great discussion. This post came from a place of frustration and I was fully expecting to be downvoted into oblivion. There are a couple things I&#39;ve noticed in the comments that I wanted to address.

- Yes, you can switch the FN and Ctrl keys in BIOS too. I just wish you could switch the actual keys themselves. It doesn&#39;t happen often, but when a friend needs to use my laptop, this swap always causes issues.

- Someone pointed out that the undervolting thing was an Intel issue and not necessarily a Lenovo/Thinkpad issue. I didn&#39;t realize this initially, so I appreciate you pointing this out.

- I&#39;d really like to hear from anyone else with an X1E Gen 3 about how you are handling your GPU driver updates. TBH, most of the gripes in this post are minor, but the fact that I can&#39;t use a driver directly from NVidia has bugged me immensely.

Dear Lenovo (aka I can't recommend Thinkpad anymore.)

Lenovo uses the fourth generation of the ThinkPad P1 for a major update. The most noticeable changes are the new 16-inch display with the 16:10 aspect ratio, while the chassis size is pretty much unchanged. The new entry-level panel already offers the WQHD resolution and leaves a good impression during our measurements. The second noticeable change is the keyboard, which is now similar to the smaller sibling ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9

 Considering the performance, our entry-level configuration leaves mixed impressions. The new Nvidia T1200 GPU performance well and offers stable performance under load, but the processor is more problematic. Lenovo uses a 45W CPU from Intel, but the P1 G4 struggles to maintain even this nominal TDP under pure CPU load and it quickly drops below the 40W mark. Combined workloads only result in 20W for the CPU, which is hardly a good result for an expensive mobile workstation

 Sure, the new keyboard is not bad by any means, but there is no more advantage over rivals from Dell or HP. The new Lenovo ThinkPad P1 G4 has some positive changes like the bigger 16-inch screen or the good speakers. The development of the input devices is a problem though. The keyboard is not bad, but previous models offered noticeably better input devices

 Lenovo uses a 45W CPU from Intel, but the P1 G4 struggles to maintain even this nominal TDP under pure CPU load and it quickly drops below the 40W mark. Verdict - ThinkPad P1 G4 with mediocre CPU Performance

I need buy a laptop for school in a design field and have decided on a Thinkpad, but am a bit confused on several points. I will be running intensive 3D modeling and rendering software including Rhino, Solidworks, and Keyshot, along with Adobe programs (mostly Photoshop and Indesign, I expect.) I have been looking at mobile workstations.

I was about to pull the trigger on a T15g that I decided on last night, but when I came back to the page today, a sale had ended and the price had gone from 1,800ish to 2,200ish. I really want to stay under 2k, so I am reconsidering. 

My confusion mainly stems from the GPUs. I know I need a good dedicated graphics card for the work I'll be doing, but most of the GPUs in the Thinkpads don't show up on sites. For example, is a "GeForce RTX 2070 Super with Max-Q 8GB," substantially different than a "Quadro T500 4GB"? In what ways are they different? How much does this difference matter? I had been thinking that I definitely needed a 8GB GPU, but I'm not quite sure about that any more. 

At first, I was set on UHD, but is it that noticeably better than FHD? How important is the greater resolution to design work?

I know I need i7 or greater and 16GB or more memory. 

Any of these points that someone could speak to, I would appreciate. Thank you!

Help looking for laptop

Okay, so I'm saving for a laptop and naturally want to run Linux on it. My only problem is that I don't know which brand I should get for the optimal Linux compatibility. I consider all options, and my only constraint is price (up to $750) and as I said, Linux hardware compatibility. Within these constrains, I will list some manifacturers that I'm considering.

- __Dell__
My only problem is that my local computer store does not sell Dell computers. That means shipping costs which impact the value I can get for my money. I could go to another computer store but the first one has the best prices. Linux compatibility should be good if you go with AMD graphics, since they sell laptops with Ubuntu on them.

- __Lenovo__
I was actually going to get an IdeaPad with AMD, since my local computer store has good deals for those at the moment. But then I read about that the newer models are not very upgrade-friendly (as if any laptop nowadays was that). But what pushed me to  consider other options is [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo#Controversies). I simply don't trust their firmware anymore. However, I have heard that they play well with Linux.

I am thinking about ASUS, but most of their lineup is for gamers, and I already have a gaming rig. I could find some "casual" ASUS laptops at my computer store, but they were quite expensive. I also don't know about Linux compatibility, but I suspect it is good like most manifacturers except Microsoft and their sugarbaby HP.

They mostly sell Chromebooks, which I don't like because they use really slow hardware and rely on software optimization. I have had good experiences with their computers though.

<div class="md">Okay, so I&#39;m saving for a laptop and naturally want to run Linux on it. My only problem is that I don&#39;t know which brand I should get for the optimal Linux compatibility. I consider all options, and my only constraint is price (up to $750) and as I said, Linux hardware compatibility. Within these constrains, I will list some manifacturers that I&#39;m considering.

<li>Dell
My only problem is that my local computer store does not sell Dell computers. That means shipping costs which impact the value I can get for my money. I could go to another computer store but the first one has the best prices. Linux compatibility should be good if you go with AMD graphics, since they sell laptops with Ubuntu on them.</li>
<li>Lenovo
I was actually going to get an IdeaPad with AMD, since my local computer store has good deals for those at the moment. But then I read about that the newer models are not very upgrade-friendly (as if any laptop nowadays was that). But what pushed me to consider other options is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo#Controversies">this</a>. I simply don&#39;t trust their firmware anymore. However, I have heard that they play well with Linux.</li>
<li>ASUS
I am thinking about ASUS, but most of their lineup is for gamers, and I already have a gaming rig. I could find some &quot;casual&quot; ASUS laptops at my computer store, but they were quite expensive. I also don&#39;t know about Linux compatibility, but I suspect it is good like most manifacturers except Microsoft and their sugarbaby HP.</li>
<li>Acer
They mostly sell Chromebooks, which I don&#39;t like because they use really slow hardware and rely on software optimization. I have had good experiences with their computers though.</li>

What I&#39;m not considering at the moment.

What laptop brand should I get?

I love it...great keyboard of course and it's maxed with 40 Gb ram and 2 TB NVME storage

My six year old Dell died on me yesterday and now I've been looking for options on what to buy. 
I had the chance of using a Lenovo yoga and I really loved how smooth the keyboard feels (but I'm not too crazy about the touchscreen).

I plan on running either Pop Os! or Ubuntu. Would also prefer if the laptop is lightweight enough to carry it around and not have it break my back, also I create a lot of writing documents and download way too many movies/tv shows.
I won't do any gaming or use suuuper heavy programs.

What laptop brand do you use and why? Also what model and distro? 

(btw sorry for any grammatical errors, english is not my 1st language).
