Coming from a ThinkPad T420 and use primarily for work (Office) and browsing. No gaming.

 When in rest mode, it takes lot of battery to keep it going and then eventually shuts off as it runs out of battery. Though I still don’t feel it keeps it’s charge too well in general even when it has been charging and then you unplug to use it.  The screen is sensitive, so be sure not to place the laptop head first on its screen or else you may get a pixelated screen. I did that since that’s what I do with my old laptop to let it cool down which was fine for that one, but it’s not a good idea with this laptop so I stopped

  When left it in rest mode, it eats up the power within a few days if you don’t use it and leave it in that state. it goes into rest mode if you just close the laptop itself without shutting it off. I'm looking for a laptop to use while studying cs which I expect to start in a few months, I prefer the professional and clean design of the two laptops and I don't care much about gaming since I already got a desktop.

I've also considered the latest 14" MBP for more ports and a bit bigger screen and the better chip. Though, I'm worried about software compatibility in M1 laptops since I've heard you can't dual boot Windows on an M1 if you have to use it. 

For the XPS 13, battery life concerns me a bit, the webcam is also underwhelming especially compared to the macbooks.

So should I go for the MBA/P or an XPS 13 or other Windows based laptop (SurfaceBook, Lenovo, Asus ... etc)?

what are the best cost benefit laptops for working with computational modeling and 3D modeling?

I need a laptop that has an i5 or i7 cpu, min 8gb ram, 14 or 15" screen (full hd), 256+ SSD. There are many, many laptops with these specs but the most important aspect is that it has ultra durable hinges because the screen gets opened and closed ALOT every day. The last 2 laptops lasted just over a year before the hinges came apart (right out of warranty period on both). I know there are the ultra rugged offerings that are so bulky it looks like it could be run over by a car or dropped from 30 feet and be fine. This still needs to look and feel like a regular modern laptop. Price range is around $1000-$1200 ish. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Dead Pixel and Not Windows 7

 Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K.

My Lenovo Thinkpad from nearly a decade ago hasn't been working too well for me lately, sometimes struggling with video calls and buffering videos. Also, it's graphics card isn't good enough to run a few games I'd like to play (Civ 6, Ori & the Blind Forest, Journey). Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K

The laptop works great but never keeps a charge. It has to be plugged in for it to work. I don’t use it much and kept forgetting to set up a return but now it’s too late. I might have to buy a new battery
