Hey! I need to get a new laptop for my travels, I'll need a webcam and microphone for meetings, I won't be loading  huge spreadsheets and I'll only be using Photoshop as a hobby to create art. If there's any laptops that double up as a good graphics tablet that would be a bonus. Hoping to spend less that £1k if that's possible. As it's for travel it will need to be lightweight and have a screen size of 13inches approx :)

I have done some research but its hard to not be tempted by the more expensive ones, however, will an older model really not suffice for my needs? Would be great to hear people's thoughts/experience?

Laptop recommendations please

The laptop is great. Very powerful machine. I do a lot of heavy programming and I'm on the road a lot. This laptop give me the power and the mobility I need to get my work done

My Lenovo Thinkpad from nearly a decade ago hasn't been working too well for me lately, sometimes struggling with video calls and buffering videos. Also, it's graphics card isn't good enough to run a few games I'd like to play (Civ 6, Ori & the Blind Forest, Journey). Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K

Okay, so I'm saving for a laptop and naturally want to run Linux on it. My only problem is that I don't know which brand I should get for the optimal Linux compatibility. I consider all options, and my only constraint is price (up to $750) and as I said, Linux hardware compatibility. Within these constrains, I will list some manifacturers that I'm considering.

My only problem is that my local computer store does not sell Dell computers. That means shipping costs which impact the value I can get for my money. I could go to another computer store but the first one has the best prices. Linux compatibility should be good if you go with AMD graphics, since they sell laptops with Ubuntu on them.

- __Lenovo__
I was actually going to get an IdeaPad with AMD, since my local computer store has good deals for those at the moment. But then I read about that the newer models are not very upgrade-friendly (as if any laptop nowadays was that). But what pushed me to  consider other options is [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo#Controversies). I simply don't trust their firmware anymore. However, I have heard that they play well with Linux.

I am thinking about ASUS, but most of their lineup is for gamers, and I already have a gaming rig. I could find some "casual" ASUS laptops at my computer store, but they were quite expensive. I also don't know about Linux compatibility, but I suspect it is good like most manifacturers except Microsoft and their sugarbaby HP.

They mostly sell Chromebooks, which I don't like because they use really slow hardware and rely on software optimization. I have had good experiences with their computers though.

What I'm **not** considering at the moment.

- HP, my experience with their hardware is dreadful, basically M$'s sugarbaby.
- "Pure" Linux laptops like [Purism](https://puri.sm/) and [System76](https://system76.com/), since they are sadly very expensive and shipping costs also limit this option. [Framework](https://frame.work/) only sells to USA and Canada at the moment.

Can you comment with what laptop you're using for Linux? And maybe suggest something different altogether?

What laptop brand should I get?

i'm a computer science student

until now i didn't need a laptop since the subjects were mostly theory and my desktop was sufficient, but soon i'll need something i can bring to school

i heard good things about the "dell vostro" lineup, but i'd like more opinions before buying

## expected usage
* programming in java, C and guile, i'll use eclipse as ide
* taking notes
* browsing the web
* maybe light gaming (possibly some pc-98 emulation)

## budget
* 500€ - 700€

## priorities
* good linux support (i guess it's a given)
* battery life (possibly 6h or more of taking notes)
* durability (sturdyness? i'm not really sure of the word)
* working wifi (doesn't have to be especially fast, just to work without problems on linux, i can rarely use wired connections)

laptop for school

Need some advice from fellow Thinkers.  I currently own a T440p but its beginning to break down on me and not sure what my next move should be as the sea is vast.  Some of my needs are that I would need to use my current storage set up which are ssd for boot up, storage in the optical drive and storage using m.2 2242 form factor in the wwan port.  This is my current setup in my T440p.  The short "research" that I have done has led me to stumble upon the W540 but I'm sure there may be more options. Not sure if these are good specs for today's use but I'm sure they are probably fine for a casual user like myself.  I dont really game on cpu's  maybe occasionally.  I will photo edit  and some video if possible.  Here are the specs for it.  Total comes out to about $470.  Are there better options for me according to my needs?
