Hey! I need to get a new laptop for my travels, I'll need a webcam and microphone for meetings, I won't be loading  huge spreadsheets and I'll only be using Photoshop as a hobby to create art. If there's any laptops that double up as a good graphics tablet that would be a bonus. Hoping to spend less that £1k if that's possible. As it's for travel it will need to be lightweight and have a screen size of 13inches approx :)

I have done some research but its hard to not be tempted by the more expensive ones, however, will an older model really not suffice for my needs? Would be great to hear people's thoughts/experience?

Laptop recommendations please

Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K.

My Lenovo Thinkpad from nearly a decade ago hasn't been working too well for me lately, sometimes struggling with video calls and buffering videos. Also, it's graphics card isn't good enough to run a few games I'd like to play (Civ 6, Ori & the Blind Forest, Journey). Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K

Please excuse me as I introduce myself as a level 3 newb. I've done a couple things, played around with a raspberry pi a few times (for literally *dozens* of hours mostly spent frustrated), and have just a bit more knowledge and experience than your average tech nerd newb.

I don't really know where else to pose this question so here it is. My #1 concern/priority is privacy, mostly with regards to big tech etc and I also obviously care about security. I spend about 12-16 hours per day on my Chromebook and cryptocurrency is my life.

Should I go all out and simply buy a System76 Lemur Pro or should I just reformat (or whatever the correct term is lol) my old asus Chromebook into a Linux build? Or do I even need to bother doing either of these things? Most of my time is spent online, so does it really matter if I have a Linux OS or Chromium? Or does the biggest factor revolve around my online privacy, and nothing *really* has to do with specifically what OS I have?

The System76 Lemur Pro looks absolutely beautiful and it's not too crazy expensive so I think the convenience of buying an out of the box Linux laptop would be worth it. But do I really need to go Linux with privacy being my main concern?? I've been doing so much research with regards to mobile phone privacy and I've got that just about set up for my own personal needs, and I'm just starting to look at my laptop in terms of the same goals with regards to privacy and de-googleing myself.

Why are you buying old ThinkPads?

I had never heard there was a Thinkpad cult until I started considering buying one and searched about it.

In fact, when I took it into consideration at first, I thought it was an outdated ugly looking thing. To my surprise, that's exactly one of the aspects that enthusiasts seem to like about it: the retro industrial design. It's the kind of design that gives the message: USE ME TO DO IMPORTANT THINGS WITHOUT THE NEED TO SHOW OFF 😂. Plus, people say it's sturdy, good specs, fair price, and the keyboard feels great. 

I've seen that a number of engineers, scientists and important companies use it. I was watching the news, an interview with a scientist in a lab, and I could see a Thinkpad in the backgroud. Also: if Nasa uses it, that must mean something!

Of course I was influenced by all that to change my mind about its ugliness. But I really gave it a second thought when I took my father to the store and the Thinkpad was his favorite (even though he is not into computers and didn't know anything about Thinkpads). 

I don't like the fact it's heavy compared to a Surface Pro or a Galaxy Book, but I'm also reconsidering that - especially because I hope to be a future engineer, so a 2-in-1 Thinkpad with 16GB would make more sense and cost like 500-600 euros less than a stylish lighter device with the same specs. I haven't bought it yet, but I'll probably will. 

Anyway, what are your relationships with Thinkpads like?

Okay, so I'm saving for a laptop and naturally want to run Linux on it. My only problem is that I don't know which brand I should get for the optimal Linux compatibility. I consider all options, and my only constraint is price (up to $750) and as I said, Linux hardware compatibility. Within these constrains, I will list some manifacturers that I'm considering.

- __Dell__
My only problem is that my local computer store does not sell Dell computers. That means shipping costs which impact the value I can get for my money. I could go to another computer store but the first one has the best prices. Linux compatibility should be good if you go with AMD graphics, since they sell laptops with Ubuntu on them.

- __Lenovo__
I was actually going to get an IdeaPad with AMD, since my local computer store has good deals for those at the moment. But then I read about that the newer models are not very upgrade-friendly (as if any laptop nowadays was that). But what pushed me to  consider other options is [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo#Controversies). I simply don't trust their firmware anymore. However, I have heard that they play well with Linux.

I am thinking about ASUS, but most of their lineup is for gamers, and I already have a gaming rig. I could find some "casual" ASUS laptops at my computer store, but they were quite expensive. I also don't know about Linux compatibility, but I suspect it is good like most manifacturers except Microsoft and their sugarbaby HP.

They mostly sell Chromebooks, which I don't like because they use really slow hardware and rely on software optimization. I have had good experiences with their computers though.

What I'm **not** considering at the moment.

- HP, my experience with their hardware is dreadful, basically M$'s sugarbaby.
- "Pure" Linux laptops like [Purism](https://puri.sm/) and [System76](https://system76.com/), since they are sadly very expensive and shipping costs also limit this option. [Framework](https://frame.work/) only sells to USA and Canada at the moment.

Can you comment with what laptop you're using for Linux? And maybe suggest something different altogether?

Lenovo Thinkpad. The only issue would be the battery life, but you could get multiple batteries since they're not internal.

I am looking for a new (or refurbished) laptop to do office tasks and write code.  The most intensive thing I intend to do is run a Windows 10 VM for the few programs that don't run on Linux.

Preferences: 

The most important thing to me is compatibility with Linux.  It seems like a lot of laptops nowadays have issues with running Linux (particularly with suspending and such), so the most important thing to me is that the hardware will be able to work with Linux out of the box/with minor bios tweaks.

   * Longer is better, as I am a student and will be carrying the machine around daily
* Size: &lt;= 14 inches is preferable
   * Size is not a major factor, as long as I can fit it in a backpack
* Weight
   * I am not picky about weight.
