 All right so now I have the wireless access point connected right here and what this is going to do is show us if you have a really big house and you need to connect some of your devices to the mesh access point which is wireless to the other router like maybe you're getting bad speeds here with just a single router and you need to add another one. We're going to see what kind of speeds we can get from the mesh access point. So I'm going to go ahead and run a speed test here and see what kind of speeds we get. Looks like we're going to see about let's see 300 over 300

 But even though it's dual-band the five gigahertz channel has the capability to use 160 megahertz channels which allows you to get ridiculous speeds with devices that support it. And like the Velop you can also buy multiple Hydras and mesh them together using the intelligent mesh system and you can even wirelessly mesh the Hydra with the Velop or vice versa to get even more flexibility. All right so now I have the wireless access point connected right here and what this is going to do is show us if you have a really big house and you need to connect some of your devices to the mesh access point which is wireless to the other router like maybe you're getting bad speeds here with just a single router and you need to add another one.  So as you can see that is faster than what we saw when we connected directly to the router downstairs. So again this is the benefit of Wi-Fi 6. I was especially impressed by the speeds from the wireless mesh access point

I went with Netgear Orbi WiFi 6 mesh AX4200 since I didn’t want either Google or Amazon up in my business. Actually purchased the dual band, but returned it unopened for the tri band setup. 10x improvement on AppleTV and 700mbs wireless, wound up skipping the ethernet drop to the iMac.

I held out for years since the Airport setup was ‘fine’. What changed since 2010 is my expectations: forty or so HomeKit devices, 4K streaming, video calls, HomePod. None of that existed ten years back, so shout out to the Airport for ticking away untouched in a dusty corner. I was dreading setting my home up again, but reused same SSID and PW and was up and running in no time. 

So for anyone else sitting in the fence thinking ‘fine’ is fine, take the plunge!

I finally did it

  Not sure it's common to all mesh wifi, but Velop needs a lot of node to have the equivalent signal strength and coverage as in my case I ended up using all 6 of it to get rid of dead spot. I knew 3 nodes may not be enough but I expected 4 would cut it. Yet I found myself kept adding more to the mesh.  While I was at it, I also grabbed a deal from Staples for 2 dual band Velop mini mesh node, the ac1300, but ended up returning it as its backhaul throughput is too low while wifi signal is as strong as the tri-band, so other than interference it does no good

Not the Best Bang for the Buck but Attractive Design

 It took a few minutes, but I didn't have to do anything, and that's about as easy as router setup gets. The appeal of the Velop system is that it's a mesh network, so I plugged in the other nodes throughout the house. The app then automatically joined them to the mesh network, and let me know if I'd place them in a good spot to ensure solid connectivity. This one I placed in a bedroom on a different floor from the main node

 Now this mesh system is designed to provide up to 8100 square feet of wireless coverage. That completely covered the inside of my house and the backyard, but I went for a walk down the street to see how far I could get a WiFi signal. The strength started to drop off as I walked away from the house, because it's now having to go through brick. However, I got two houses away before losing the signal

 However, you can use the mobile app or the computer app to tweak performance and functionality. This includes features like device prioritization and parental controls. Running the speed test, you can see my download speed is showing up as 593 megabits per second. That's actually slightly over the half gig internet service I pay for

 The app then automatically joined them to the mesh network, and let me know if I'd place them in a good spot to ensure solid connectivity. This one I placed in a bedroom on a different floor from the main node. It's an area that traditionally gets spotty WiFi. There's a game console here, and I plugged it directly into the Velop node with Ethernet, so it gets the maximum speed possible

The upside of this is- wired is generally better for the usual reasons, and these nodes are more likely to support the fast roaming protocols which help clients hand off between access points smoothly. You mention Linksys Velop products- I have only passing familiarity with their Velop nodes, but found that they were terrible for both initial setup, for reliability, and for features. I've run them both as wired mesh, and as wireless mesh. Pretty much the single worst networking purchase I have made in the past two decades of playing with gear

I currently have (3) linksys routers, two of which I'm running in bridge mode as access points. We built our house in 2003 and I have extensively run cat5e cabling into every room so hardwiring isnt an issue (that's why I don't want/care for a mesh network). Right now everything is working perfectly; we have good signal coverage across the house. As I understand it, in a true hardwired network with access points, its the clients (like our phones and tables) that are smart enough to lock onto a node, or release a node for a stronger signal, as you move about your property; NOT the nodes/routers/network itself that picks up and drops the clients. I'm not sure why mesh marketing keeps touting the advanced management to 'balance clients' etc. 

Anyway, I want to get new stuff, but none of the product literature talks about using these devices as an access point. So this is what I was going to get to replace my current setup: 

Router: Linksys AX6000 (MR9600)
indoor access points, *not* Mesh: Linksys AX5300 (MX10600)  (basically 2 indoor APs)
outdoor access points: NETGEAR (WAX610Y) Wireless Outdoor Access Point (3)


-I'd love to have just linksys stuff because I've had a good track record with their stuff so far and I'd like to be brand loyal. Netgear has more prosumer stuff, like dedicated indoor and outdoor access points but their better routers have gotten some bad reviews, so i'm scared to switch brands and take a chance. I know its all the same shit but still, these are my concerns:

1. Can I set all this stuff up the way I want and use diff brands as access points and not have conflict?

2. can the Linksys AX5300 (MX10600) nodes be used as access points, and not just as a mesh network?

Lovely design - but constant chaos

Wyze doorbell pro was charging for 10 hours and is only at 72%. Also all the connections get lost at night. This shouldn’t be this hard.

The setup password appears on a white piece of tape underneath the bottoms of the devices, black ink, about #3 font, includes a character that could be a zero, a capital "O", or a lower case "o". For a company that's been around forever, I would have thought they had at least one employee whose job is to provide common sense to the finished products

It's just unbearable. Home app doesn't work anymore. Nanoleaf lights refuses to work, keeps on "updating" status forever and then fails. Nanoleaf app shows the same, keeps loading forever and then fail. I don't know what to do anymore. Only the Dining Room works (Lifx). Is Thread dead already?
