I got this laptop black friday for this price ($899usd). I know a lot of people around here talk bad about the rtx 3050ti 4gb of VRAM but if you don’t mind not playing all games on the highest setting is it really that bad? I upgraded from an HP Pavilion with a gtx 1050 which couldn’t run most games whereas a rtx 3050ti can run most. For the amount of ram, storage and processor it was the cheapest I came across and I had a pretty strict budget. Honestly just wondering bc after having it for a week I don’t think it’s all that bad but dang these people around here have me second guessing LOL. I’m able to run halo infinite with like 90 fps on low instead of high and all my other games i opt for medium/high settings over like “ultra high” such as GTA V, warzone, fortnite etc and pull like 90s/100s fps easily and the VRAM bar isn’t even full. I looked around for 1660ti/2060/3060 before settling for this but all those were drastically more expensive for older processors and lower ram.

Hi all. In about 8 days I will fly out to Naples Italy and join a study abroad program called Semester at Sea that will sail through and stop at a bunch of different European Ports. I have bought the new go pro 10 to document my adventure and put together vlogs for youtube, and I am starting to get fairly comfortable using the camera and switching between the appropriate presets. 

Here is where I need help: I am in dire need of a new laptop as I have been using the HP Pavilion 360 on Windows 10 for the past 4 years. I tried uploading new go-pro footage to my laptop using the USB cable, but it appears my computer has trouble playing, downloading, and even recognizing video that is in 4k or 5.3 k.  As I look at getting a new laptop, is there any model, in particular that will allow me to use, view, and download all this 4k footage? Keep in mind I don't have thousands of dollars left to spend as I have already gone all out to save for this expensive trip and buy the new go pro, but I will do what is necessary to make all this work. Is my current laptop just old and I am overthinking this, or does anyone have a good idea for what I should be looking for (preferably windows) to support this beautiful footage?

My second question pertains a little more directly to video editing. My experience with video editing comes mostly with making funny videos, creating sports highlight clips for my friends, and just putting together old home videos to make funny spinoffs of movie trailers and pop culture references. I have always used wonder share filmora but I'm curious if that program will support my 4k video and or if I should switch programs. Long term I want to transition to a better program but for now I'm content with wondershare if it will support 4 and 5 k on a newer laptop.  I think I may have potential to one day be really good at video editing, but my basic understanding with a lot of this stuff is still at a very raw level right now. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Questions about video software, and search for new Laptop

 You can find an RTX 3060 for less in the Gigabyte G5 KC (I saw that model for $1,049 after rebate), but that laptop is saddled with a previous-generation Core i5-10500H chip and half the storage (512GB).

The price only applies in-store at Micro Center, but even if you spend up to $200 more online, it's still reasonable: Asus' comparably equipped TUF Gaming F15 commands $1,399 on Amazon. MSI Katana GF66 Review

Hello everyone,

My company has decided to get me a new laptop because my previous one had gotten old. They got me a MSI katana gf66, which is actually a gaming laptop but, apparently, it was the only option from our suppliers that had enough power and a large enough screen. Unfortunately, we found out too late that the USB-C port of this laptop does not support DisplayPort, surprisingly. Thus, I am unable to use my docking station to connect two external displays. The laptop has a single HDMI port so I can connect only a single external monitor at this time.

Do you know other linux-compatible devices to get a multi-monitor setup working without a DisplayPort? I need them to be different screens so a simple HDMI splitter won't do, since it would only duplicate the output as far as I understood.  
I googled a lot, but I just came out with a lot of confusion in my head.   
It seems like most of these docking stations assume that you have DisplayPort without telling you that you need it (and this includes my own dock, which doesn't mention it anywhere on its box).   
Then I understand there may be devices that work via standard USB, but I think they require some software to work, but I can't find devices that say they are supported on Linux.

Anyone can help me in finding a compatible device that can work in my use-case? Does it even exist or I'm chasing impossible dreams?

I’m looking to buy a new laptop and have VERY limited knowledge about tech. I only really need it to play the Total War games in terms of gaming. But I’m also a scientist, so it’ll need to be able to run software such as SPSS (maybe even some coding in the near future). 

Ideally I’d like it to be around £700 but can afford to go up to £1,000. If it’s cheaper then great, as I say, I’m not a hardcore gamer and would just like it to be able to play a few Total War games. 

If anybody can give me some advice I’d be super grateful.

you can probably get a windows laptop and some apps may not support some apps and the price of windows laptops are better like MSI Katana gf66  gives you double the performance and probably last like 3 years more for 100 bucks more

Hello, all. I’m a 2nd year computer science student at university, and am greatly debating updating my laptop. 

I currently have the base model MacBook Pro 13” 2020, with 256 GB, 8 GB memory, and a 1.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 processor. (Graphics is Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645 1536 MB.) 

This laptop is great for basic stuff, however, does not hold up well to processor-intensive activities. The most processor heavy thing I’ve had to run so far in my CS classes are virtual machines, and I need them kinda often. This laptop cannot handle running a VM to save its life. It can barely get them open before it starts overheating and inevitably freezing. It also cannot handle XCode very well, even if I’m just running one project it’ll get very slow and unresponsive. This computer is already hindering my ability to do what I need for school. I’m not sure how intense the stuff I’ll be doing in later years of my CS degree will be, but I need this next laptop to last about 5 years (finishing off my degree and probably first year or two of work force). 

I was thinking of upgrading to the M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14”, with 512 GB, 16 GB unified memory, 8 core CPU, 14 core GPU. Will this be enough to let me run my VMs and anything else I’ll need in my degree/future comfortably? Should I fork out the extra $180 to bump it up to 10 core CPU? (Keep in mind I’m already very much breaking the bank even getting the base model). And quite frankly, I have no clue what the difference an 8 core and 10 core CPU would provide. 

I am very confused, and a bit stressed. 

Any advice is greatly welcomed and deeply appreciated. :)
