The AF-S Nikkor 35mm F1.8G DX is a lens which certainly caused a degree of dismay on its release, with many Nikon fans disappointed by the decision to make it compatible with the DX format only. However the main benefit of that decision is plain for all to see - even at its introductory price the lens costs rather less than the venerable AF-Nikkor 35mm F2.0D, despite the addition of an AF-S motor to allow autofocusing on Nikon's entry-level D40 / D40X / D60 bodies. It's also less than half the price of the few other DX format standard primes currently on the market (such as the Pentax 35mm F2.8 Macro, Tokina 35mm F2.8 Macro and Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM), so Nikon has managed with this lens to produce the first genuinely inexpensive (sub-$200) fast standard prime designed specifically for digital SLRs. 

Within this context, the lens's performance is very impressive. It produces finely detailed images at all apertures (although with somewhat low contrast wide open), focuses quickly and accurately, and handles well in a small, light package. In particular, it's much sharper than typical DX standard zooms such as the Nikon AF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 DX VR or Nikon AF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 DX VR. The fast maximum aperture allows pictures to be taken hand-held in low light levels, while maintaining relatively fast shutter speeds to avoid blur from subject motion (a key advantage over image-stabilised, but slow, kit zooms when photographing people without flash indoors). The slightly less tangible aspects of image quality - such as resistance to flare, and the rendition of out-of-focus regions of the frame - are also dealt with nicely. 

If the lens has one major flaw, it is a certain propensity to show chromatic aberration, of both the lateral kind (which can be corrected by the in-camera JPEG processing of the D90 and D300), and the longitudinal (which cannot). To be fair the latter is a pretty well unavoidable with a fast prime, but the 35mm F1.8G DX suffers from it to a rather high degree, and in particular can give some unpleasant purple fringing effects if you're not careful. 

Overall, though, it seems almost churlish to complain about these flaws in a lens so inexpensive, which gives otherwise such fine results. It's good to see Nikon finally addressing the lack of purpose-designed, inexpensive fast primes for DX format DSLRs, and we hope they - and other companies - continue with this trend. As it is the 35mm F1.8G DX is, for its winning combination of high image quality, large maximum aperture and low price, a lens which deserves to be on many a Nikon shooter's shopping list.

Hi everyone. I’m looking to upgrade my kit lens. I’m currently using a discontinued Nikon D7000.

Lens Recommendation

Focus is available to 11.8 inches, measured from the image sensor. It doesn't put the lens into macro territory, but with the ability to magnify subjects at 1:6 life-size at its closest focus distance, you can still capture small details&mdash;just not as small as you would with a 1:2 or 1:1 macro lens.

The manual focus ring is a bit of a letdown, though I expect most who use this lens will rely heavily on autofocus. It's a mechanical focus control, so you can adjust focus even if your camera is powered down, but it feels rough when turning. I like to see a focus ring with some resistance for finer control, but not like this. I can practically feel gears turning inside the lens when adjusting the ring, and it creates some noise as it turns, making it less than ideal for manual focus video

There's no image stabilization, nor does Nikon offer any cameras with in-body stabilization at this time. It's not a huge deal for still photography, as you can get a sharp shot with the lens at speeds where subject movement is more of a concern than camera shake. But if you're thinking about the lens for handheld video you'll end up with shaky footage. It's best to use it with a tripod for moving images, and to reach for a lens with stabilization when handholding your camera

8 primes in the 20mm, 24mm, and 28mm. They are small and light, for full-frame lenses, so they'll still pair well with a DX Nikon SLR, but they are more expensive, at $700 and up.

8G it is not a stellar performer at higher resolutions (think 24MP DX or 36/46MP FX) when wide open. If you're only shooting f2.8 and higher, that's not really a problem but if you're buying it to be used at f1.8, I'd go with the new S-lens - buy once, cry once

As for the Sigma: It is quite a bit sharper, has less purple fringing, significantly less bokeh fringing (long. CAs). It is heavier and more expensive, but it is a significantly better lens as well.

Nikon 85mm 1. 8G or Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art?

  I also used this lens to try to capture a summer night rocket launch. You need a tripod for that, especially with this lens. Moreover, though: if you can get a clear view from about the launchpad on up, use a regular lens with a bulb release, hold it down from the time you see it take off, and as long as you successfully pre-focused / appropriately pre-configured your shot, you might just end up with an awesome streak shot, without even needing this lens! I recommend that you stop down first (set up the camera with a low-ish f-stop, I think) and practice the approximate timing with your selected aperture before you try this shot. Otherwise the shot will probably be way overexposed

  This lens doesn't have image stabilization. So, even if you could focus it in the dark -- which autofocus mechanisms have trouble doing -- guess what? The image may come out blurry, anyway. I did learn a trick as time went on, though: the kayaks have glow sticks at each end (green on the stern, red on the bow). Focus on one of those, and hold down the AF lock

 This lens can sometimes do pretty well at that. (Other times, like for a streak shot, you can just use a regular lens on a tripod with a bulb release. Depends on your subject and the effect you want.)  3) Experimentation with shallower depths of field (used in portrait photography)

 (Or then set it to manual and don't touch the focus ring, but you could accidentally move it.) Then you can try shooting something around the same distance as the glow stick you focused on.   With that said, I’ve used this lens before and I know it’s an incredible value. A 5-star lens, for sure. Maybe, just try to avoid buying it from wherever I bought it from.

I was under the assumption I was buying this new and maybe it is. But the lens had dust on it and was shipped with an Amazon Basics lens filter on it, which I know Nikkor doesn’t supply with its lenses and the filter was not listed as an item that should’ve been in the box. Has this been used before?

 Regarding the 50mm focal length, I've never had a problem shooting all sorts of indoors portraits with my 50.  In the end, I can recommend the 35 without hesitation. However, if you have other lenses to buy, such as a wide angle or super telephoto, you might consider saving the 200 dollars towards one of those. I'd also ask myself if shooting a 35mm prime will have me snapping stagnate images or creative & unique photos

  Distortion: The first portrait I took with the 35 surprised me as my subject's nose was larger than life. It wasn't "huge", but noticeable. I was maybe about 3 feet away, which I thought to be an okay standoff distance from a person. True, the lens has barrel distortion to be aware of

  Original review: This is a great lens, sharp, inexpensive, light, easy to carry, and perfect for "snapshots". It can be a no-brainer purchase as so many others have said.  However, in my opinion, it's a 200 dollar "snapshot" lens. That's not a bad thing either

Wonderful little lens!  However...

This lens has been on my cameras (D-60 and D-90) now for over 6 months, for thousands of images, and the honeymoon is not yet over. After decades of film use on several Nikon cameras, I went I went kicking and screaming into digital. This lens on my DSLR is very close to my normal way of shooting from my film days.  So, why the reason for the reduced rating? If I could, I'd give it four and a half stars, but five is perfect, and it is not perfect

 I can't understand why Nikon decided to not have any distance scale on this lens. Additionally, the lens could use at least a minimal DOF scale (set for the DX format) for maybe two apertures to go with that missing distance scale. Surly this would not have added much to the cost of this lens, and would have made it more operationally sound by allowing zone and hyper-focusing.  With that said, my experience with this lens has been very rewarding

 My images made at f/1.8 show good sharpness on the narrow plane of focus, that is made to appear even more sharp against the soft blur of the out of focus area. This lens will enable you to make photos that can't be replicated by a f/4-5.6 zoom

Every now and then I'll find that the light is so low that the VR on my old lens would help, but in the vast majority of cases the ability to open up the aperture more than makes up for not having it.  Yes, this lens is prone to some pretty funky chromatic aberration sometimes. It seems especially noticeable in lower-light situations, with wider apertures

 But the difference in the amount of light let through a lens in going from 3.5 to 2.8 is _significant_, let alone going from f3.5 to f1

 Even without VR, the wider aperture on the new lens made a huge difference in our ability to capture sharp photos of our kids, in or out of the house, in a much wider range of light conditions.  Upon seeing the significant difference in the exposure quality of her pictures with the new lens I immediately was beset by technology envy, but since she's the primary photographer in our house and it's merely a hobby for me, I wasn't even going to try justifying the expenditure to buy me one too. So I settled on this lens. It's cheap, small, has a focus motor, and with a few already-noted exceptions, it provides very good images mounted on my Nikon D5100

Great lens for the price

  This lens is excellent for shooting in poor lighting conditions. The pictures that were yellow and blurry are now clear and crisp. I borrowed a friends 50mm lens and while the pictures were great I was always trying to back up for the shot I wanted. The problem with backing up further is people walking in front of the camera

00 when I bought it. It's a great deal in my book (1/4 of the 18-200 cost).  If your on a budget you could make a case that the 35mm 1.8G is the only lens you really need

 The 35mm is just about the perfect focal length on a DX camera. I've actually found myself leaving this lens on the camera for most everything. The only time I put the 18-200 back on is if I need a little wider view (rarely) or I'm going to need zoom capabilities. The build quality is good and it only cost $199

 To sum it up I think this lens is a must have and combined with the 18-200 is the only lenses I now own or plan to own. I'm chomping at the bit to upgrade the D80 to a D7000 and not considering any additional lenses.
