This filter is great for large groups, but we’ve enjoyed it on smaller outings too when we could quickly retrieve our day’s water and escape back to our camp to fill individual bottles (the clean bag also functions as water storage).

Today, i'm reviewing my favorite water filter for adventure. The platypus gravity works system. Now this system is very unique from all the other water filters. I'Ve used, i've used uv light filters, i've used pump ceramic filters and the main difference with this one is

 I love when i find a product that has multiple functions and for this one a pretty unique feature is you could use it as kind of like a mini solar shower as well or a hand washing station? That'S the great thing about having a high volume capacity in this water filtration system. Now it's not ultra light and it doesn't pack down super small, but it packs down pretty small about the size of a one liter bottle and it's not too heavy. I would say it's: it's not ultra light, but it's not super heavy. It'S pretty medium towards light in that area

 I would have to replace that cartridge every year, but since i'm not doing a bag a day for an entire year, it's lasted pretty long. So the cost to replace these filters around 50 bucks for a replacement filter. I'Ve had this one, i think for a couple years now, and it's lasted fine, it's done great um. The only reason i had to replace the first one i had is because i put some just black as night stagnant, puddle water through it, and i was actually surprised that it went through and the water came out the other end

It was super clear, but it still smelled and tasted awful, so i actually didn't end up drinking it, but it was quite a testament to the power of this small little. This small little filter here certainly packs a punch, a good tip, to know how to prolong the life of these filters

BEST Water Filter for Adventure | Platypus GravityWorks FULL REVIEW

 I believe that rest and comfort is critical to prepare for the next day of hiking. These allowed my feet to breathe and be in a shoe in the evening that doesn’t hit those same hot spots and sore areas that the trail runners hit all day long. For me personally, I think my feet were thankful. 

Switching from sleeping bag to quilt. Recommended? Yes!  I switch to the Katabatic Flex 22 this year and loved it. I’m a stomach sleeper and never slept great in my mummy bag. I was incredibly warm, and slept like a baby

 It was lighter than my bag, plus the bonus of wearing it in lieu of a puff as I mentioned above saved additional weight. 

 Total base weight at the start of the trail was about 17 lb. I take the approach of cutting weight so that I can bring some creature comforts to make the trip enjoyable, so you’ll see a few items that make my trip comfortable/enjoyable (e.g. chair, camp shoes, playing cards, cork ball) and I’m personally willing to make that sacrifice on weight to reap the benefits

Hopefully next trip these improvements will put me in the sub-15 lb base weight range. Happy to answer any questions!

 When filtering the full 4 liters at once, air in the clean water reservoir pressurizes as the reservoir fills, eventually stopping the flow. Detaching the full clean water reservoir results in substantial spillage, as does trying to pour water from the reservoir. It needs to have a handle, such as was on the recently discontinued Platypus PlusBottle, and it also needs to be able to stand upright (at least a little). The current design is about as manageable as a large water balloon

It has been too long, but finally getting back out into the wilderness for extended periods of time that require more water than I'm going to realistically carry. 

Most of my gear knowledge is from the 90's.

Looking for advice on water purification; either chemical (tablets/etc) or lightweight filter ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure technology has addressed this issue over the last 25 years.

Water purification thoughts?

 When I went to pull out and use my filter this summer after a winter of it being in storage I realized that any water that had been filtered tasted heavily of mould. This could arguably have been my fault if I hadn't correctly stored the equipment, but I'm careful to always follow instructions and maintain gear - especially if I'm going to rely on it to keep me healthy and safe in the backcountry. Anyway, again, a great product while it works, I'm just not sure I can bring myself to replace the filter a third time after I've had two premature failures.

My husband and I are starting to plan for future backpacking trips. We took our first one last fall and learned A LOT. One thing we would like to change is how we're filtering/treating our water. 

Last time we just used iodine tablets: filled up a large 2-3 gallon jug, used the tablets, and filled our bladders, etc from that. While that obviously worked, the water tastes off and I'd prefer something different. Plus the water jug we used ended up breaking on that trip and we need to find something else regardless. 

After some research I'm intrigued by the Katadyn gravity camp filter system. This seems to fit the bill for what we're looking and there are obviously so many different similar systems. My main question is whether or not this is actually useful in practice. I read some reviews that the filters would crap out after just a day or so, trying to clean and maintain the filter on the trail can be a pain, etc. 

Any suggestions or advise?

Water filtration systems for backpacking: Katadyn gravity, yay or nay?

 I would suggest that the folks at Platypus redesign the dirty bag to include some sort of primary fine-screen filter to help in situations like mine.

Good filter, but could use some design improvements.
