 So we have three controls here, a distortion filter and volume control. Distortion for the amount of gain, volume for the overall volume and the filter control doesn't work like a tone control so it's more like a low pass filter. So when we turn it to the left it gets more bright and when we turn it to the right it gets more low end. So this is my clean guitar sound

4 Tips How You Can Use The ProCo Rat 2 Distortion

<p>You can only have one pedal, one amp and one guitar. What are you going with and why?</p>

<p>Pedal - Strymon Volante Amp - Benson Monarch Reverb Guitar - Fender CS Telecaster</p>

<p>I love delay. I really like modulation too, so it was hard not to go with a CE-1 style pedal or something else. Also was very tempted to go with the Fjord Fuzz Bifrost because I LOVE that pedal. Ultimately, the Volante wins out because of the control and sound.</p>

<p>The Monarch is my favorite amp that I&#39;ve ever plugged into. I tried a couple of the big Two Rock amps as well, but they didn&#39;t move me the same. I love the &quot;dirty&quot; clean tone too. I could potentially be swayed by one of the Magnatone stereo amps, but I haven&#39;t gotten to try one yet.</p>

<p>For guitar, I love the Tele. Specifically my 58 heavy relic. Such a great sounding guitar and pairs really well with the amp. This was a tough decision though. Was very tempted to go with a Gretsch, but ultimately, I love this Tele too much to pass.</p>

at least, with humbuckers, you do. I don't use single coils, so I wouldn't know about that. So, for live sound, it's out. But, for tracking, I could definitely see using it

Don't get me wrong, the sound of the Rat has always been great. But switching it on, you lose SO much volume and low end..

Still a limited pedal. No headroom.

 Okay, and as you increase the distortion obviously, yeah, all right, a little more. Okay, let's turn the distortion all the way up. and let's go with the neck pickup on this one. Hey Whoo! that is huge! Let's check out the filter knob

 and the other way it gets darker. so not like a traditional tone knob. It's more of a high-end cut or boost. And finally, the volume control

 All right, let's listen to the Rat at a lower distortion setting. with the filter at about 12 o'clock and the volume set roughly at Unity gain you pretty huge right off the bat. Okay, and as you increase the distortion obviously, yeah, all right, a little more. Okay, let's turn the distortion all the way up

 It's your basic 3 knob fuzz overdrive, distortion box, distortion control, filter control, volume control, and an on/off switch with the red light indicator let you know you're on or off. The Rat 2 came out in 1988 and one of the biggest changes was the sloped front. It's got heavy duty metal housing, switches and knobs, so this thing can really take it. It's designed to be used on stage

Pro Co Rat 2 Distortion/Fuzz/Overdrive Pedal Demo - Sweetwater Sound

 A Small Clone/Neo Clone or Boss CH-1 chorus might be fun if you want things to sound wiggly and underwater. A more basic delay pedal like a Boss DD3T or an Electro Harmonix Canyon or Ibanez Analog Delay Mini would be a good introduction into the world of delays.

A Dunlop Crybaby Wah Wah could be fun if you like rock and metal. A ProCo Rat 2 Distortion is a great first distortion pedal if you don't like the distortion options available with just your amp. A Small Clone/Neo Clone or Boss CH-1 chorus might be fun if you want things to sound wiggly and underwater. A more basic delay pedal like a Boss DD3T or an Electro Harmonix Canyon or Ibanez Analog Delay Mini would be a good introduction into the world of delays

[QUESTION] Best first pedal

 If the song has distortion and clean both, balancing with the bypass is little tricky; had to cut the treble , lower the middle and boost the bass from the amp side. My sweetspot is 20% on the distortion, 70-75% on filter and volume and it delivers good level of OD. To make it even more dirty, I crank up the volume booster on the guitar rather than using the distortion knob. For the $70, this is a very good pedal over boss but don't expect augilar or TS808 out of this

It is not a great but good pedal for the money. The build quality is very good, sturdy metal housing, tactile switch and the knobs are good quality. It is heavy enough to keep itself from moving on the floor, so far found nothing against the build. Now as for the performance, I am using this with bass (do not know whether its meant for the guitars only or not) and it requires a bit of adjustment for it's lo cut

 To make it even more dirty, I crank up the volume booster on the guitar rather than using the distortion knob. For the $70, this is a very good pedal over boss but don't expect augilar or TS808 out of this. For practice and experiment, I'm using it already; for live, I may or may not use this; for recording, nah.

Very good pedal for the money.

 I actually had the Turbo Rat, which had the same op amp but just some different diodes for more output and a different flavor of clipping. It was an aggressive sound, but it really worked with the amp I was playing through, which was a solid state Carvin, a great clean tone but absolutely no breakup on its own. For a while I strayed away from the Rat because I was in search of something else, a little bit more touch sensitive, something that would clean up better with the guitar's volume knob. But it wasn't until I recently picked up a vintage Rat reissue with some crazy mods on it that I realized this was a sound that I've been looking for for a long time, and I really missed it

 So... another thing about the rad is that doesn't have a ton of output like your average overdrive unity gain I found to be about three o'clock on the volume knob and that's why a lot of guys mod these to use a different kind of diode clipping like an LED or just a diode lift which really bumps the volume up way past unity gain there's also a real special compressed quality that happens when you increase the distortion nearly all the way it gets that spongy attack and it's really cool it makes me want to just hit the strings and hear the sound bounce back at me as far as cleanup goes the rat isn't one of those pedals that gets crystal clear but it really enables you to back off and get sort of a dirty crunch and then ease back into a lead tone you let's switch over to some single coils because that's where I think this rat really shines you get that compression and sag and a smooth tone which is a great match for spiky single coils well there's a look at a vintage rat the rat to specifically and you can find these and the newer reissues from proko all day long on reverb calm thanks for watching

I was looking for an edgier distortion pedal for my guitar rig, and purchased the famous Rat2. I always wanted one, but was surprised that I didn't really care for it. When combined with high output humbuckers on a Les Paul plugged into a Marshall amp (set on the edge of break up), the note definition was almost completely absent. It certainly distorted the signal- just didn't really care for the sound

 Let's go back down to halfway. Now we want to do is here the filter which is basically the Eq sweep and I believe it goes to the opposite direction of most pedals. so if I turn this way maybe it gets darker. I haven't tried yet

Got the Les Paul You know I was thinking rock so we've got the clean Les Paul sound coming out of this amp [Music] So with the Rat, everything at 12 o'clock activate [Music] so you can hear not a lot of volume with everything at 12 o'clock. so when everything's I guess he could call that neutral when everything's at 12 [Music] the volume goes down, but you got a lot of raunchy hard rock sounding distortion so let's just bring the volume up. I Like to switch back and forth from my clean zone to to a be the volume differences
