 It's just outstanding for the application. On the note of gaming, though, I should probably mention or caution that of the open backs I've tried, this is one of the ones that leaks the most sound. So when gaming online, I tend to hear a lot more complaints about my music leaking into the microphone if I'm not on push-to-talk or muted, so I guess that's probably something I should have brought up in the cons section, but we're here now. Base aside, I also really like the tonality of the HD800S

 And the problem with the design element is that it's quite prone to getting dents and scratches if it's not handled with care. So at least for me, it feels like every time I pick up the headphone, I gotta be very mindful about trying to avoid touching that part of the headphone and only grabbing it from the black plastic parts. The more serious problem I have with the HD800S and its current design, and this is something that I pointed out in my original review, are the connector sockets for the driver, which are really easy to break. Some might remember that I actually broke my original review unit of the HD800S because I tried removing the cables from the headphone side when the entire jack assembly came out, which of course meant that I could no longer use one of the drivers in the headphone

 And in this video, I want to share maybe some insight into what drew me to this headphone while also sharing some of the pros and cons of the HD800S so that maybe you can decide if it's a good fit for you as well. Let's start out with the cons. So I should mention that I believe that the HD800S is a very well-built headphone in terms of the materials used and the care with which it's assembled. However, there are two things about this chassis that I do find to be somewhat bothersome

As expected from an open-back Sennheiser headphone, the mids here are exceptionally well-tuned with rich fundamental tones that are properly contoured by the present, yet not shouty, upper mid-range. While the treble in the original HD800 was quite spicy, I don't actually have any severe issues with the HD800's treble

Sennheiser HD800S - Pros and Cons after 2 years of Listening!

sounded no better to me than plugging my $700 Ananda straight into my 11-year-old laptop. And this was after many days of A/B testing, both long-term (listening to 40 minutes per set) and short-term (listening to just individual songs or even just the openings of specific songs). Please understand, I'm not trying to claim there is no difference—I just couldn't *hear* the difference.

 He has also used these and his other headphones with his smart phones, as well as at least one portable headphone amp (and probably other amps that he didn't mention).  I've used these with my Pioneer Elite receiver, as well as a Marantz NR1604 (based on my brother's good experience with his Marantz), a Focusrite Clarett 2Pre, a Focusrite Scarlett Solo, and a Monoprice 111567 headphone amp. I think that they all sound good with these, and the Scarlett Solo is the USB-powered amp that I mentioned above that I find more comfortable to listen to.  I've contemplated getting a more expensive headphone DAC/amp to try with these, but I haven't found one yet that is universally praised (including Sennheiser's own HDVD800, which seems to be a great amp for these but with a so-so DAC)

 After my brother told me that he was putting his beloved 600's into storage because they were getting so worn, I decided that I wanted to get him a new pair for his birthday. Now, I admit that my expectations were super high after listening to my brother (even with him trying to temper those expectations), so my first impressions were based on anticipating hearing a choir of angels when I put these on. I did not. Yeah, they sounded good, but I admit that my first impressions of the 598's were a bigger improvement over my other headphones than I thought these were over the 598's

 I think that they all sound good with these, and the Scarlett Solo is the USB-powered amp that I mentioned above that I find more comfortable to listen to.  I've contemplated getting a more expensive headphone DAC/amp to try with these, but I haven't found one yet that is universally praised (including Sennheiser's own HDVD800, which seems to be a great amp for these but with a so-so DAC).  (*) Conclusion I do like these, but they are one of the rare purchases that I partially regret having made. It's not just the cost of them, but that's part of it

Very nice headphones...but still deciding if they were worth the money

 We're gonna be talking about the HD 800 S from Sennheiser. It's so insanely recognizable. You've probably seen it many times before and it's not a new headphone. This is a bit of a blast from the audiophile world's past

 I think I've learned my mistake. It's in my collection to stay. So do I recommend the HD 800S? Well, it's expensive. Maybe not as your only headphone, unless the things I described are the exact sound you're after

 They snap on and off with relative ease, though putting them on is a little bit more difficult than getting them off, especially if you get aftermarket pads, but it's not too bad. There, I got those on pretty quick. I would say it's comparable in difficulty to the HD 600, 650, or 6XX. These are an open back dynamic and a pretty large dynamic at that, which leads to a lot of this headphone sound characteristics

Is the HD800S STILL worth it in 2022???

&#x200B;. So after collecting/selling/buying/borrowing a pretty large number of headphones, I finally decided to sell a few of my collection to get a used Sennheiser HD 800 S. And, well, they blew my d\*\*\* mind! I love them. Nothing else in my collection can hold a candle to them

 I waited a few days and listened to them again just to be sure I wasn't responding to overhyped expectations. Indeed the clarity and detail is nowhere near my Bowers and Wilkins P7 headphones.

 But my initial impression is *underwhelmed*. I am listening with HDTracks 96/24 PCP and DSD 64 / 128 downloads as well as my own AIFF CD rips (44/16). Headphone Amp: Chord Hugo 2 (an amazing amp). Currently listening with my MBPro Laptop using Audirvana+

 But so far I am not impressed at all. Last summer I auditioned the B&W P9's and love them. The only reason I didn't purchase them this time: Sennheiser 800s is leather-free and the reviews kept describing these as the ultimate standard in perfection (not!). B&W is much better

 (full disclosure, I have the B&W MM1 computer speakers and CM9 S2 floor standing loudspeakers and maybe I'm just so accustomed to B&W products and the the amazing clarity they deliver). Finally on Handel's Andante La Ghetto from Concerto No. 2 the HD800S really showed what it's about.  The HD800S have been around for quite a long while now, as I mentioned, they're an 1800 US dollar flagship from Sennheiser in terms of open backs, at least they're the flagship, and for those not familiar, they're actually a revision of the original HD800, which didn't have the S on the end, and aim to improve a few flaws in the original HD800. The big question for me, having owned these for a while, having now compared them to a number of headphones is whether or not I think they still have a place in today's market, being a relatively old design, albeit having had an upgrade and a bit of an adjustment with some of the features built into the HD800S, but are they still on top of their game in 2021? So let's jump in and find out, starting with an explanation of what you get when you buy the HD800S. My exhaustion's already caught up with me, I said in the opening they're an 1800 US dollar headphone, based on the listings on Amazon, and here in Australia, they're actually only 1900 AUD, so there's an interesting discrepancy there, normally in Australia we cop not just the exchange rate difference, but also a little bit extra, and yet in this occasion, the difference in price between US dollars and AUD is not that great. As I said, I've just taken my pricing from Amazon, so I may be a little bit off in some of those numbers, but it gives you a ballpark of roughly where they sit, they're in that sub $2000 range, but they're certainly up in that flagship level category, without going as far as some of the kind of uber flagship top of the line headphones, like the Imperions, the Utopias and the like

Sennheiser HD800S Review - Is it still relevant in 2021?

I kept them for two months. Even though they were the most satisfying-to-my-criteria headphones, they left me wanting more in terms of the treble, which was a sacrifice for a neutral amount of bass (or close to it depending on your preference).

 I have a couple of very portable battery powered Fiio HP amps also and though they, combined with my AK SE100, make the HD800's sound surprisingly well, and I would call the Fiio units the "bare minimum" to use with these Headphones. I have no interest in using my iphone (or similar) with these awesome cans (nor should anyone). First off, not enough power to drives these. Secondly, Why? If that's your game, something like Beats or Bose is a wiser choice

 Anyhow, with these babies get an amp! You'll need one if you want to hear these things dance! I'm just not sure where to go from here. I think I might be looking square in the face of my end game. But.

 Sounds exactly as if the drums were being played right in front of you. Staggering, unparalleled sound! These headphones are worth every cent I spent. FTR: I also have a couple of more portable amps for when the table top unit is not practical or available. These headphones for absolute certain, require a nice amp to get the kind of joy I am experiencing

 They simply "pump"! It is ALWAYS just awesome when something you buy (especially a high ticket item) turns out to be be better than you wildest expectations. This is one of those times! You can get reviewers telling you about imaging, separation, sound stage and all of that technical mumbo jumbo and yes, the sound stage is terrific but what really jumped out at me was how much they just pump out the sounds loud and clear with very ample bass! Man, I'm having fun on Tidal finding high res stuff that just sounds incredible. I am, for now, using them with an Astell & Kern SE100 (DAP/DAC).

It's got its own issues, especially above 1k, and these issues can be genuinely distracting. In that sense, it's not a perfect headphone, and it's not quite the perfect successor to the 6X0 series, as much as I wanted it to be. The tonal balance overall, however, is nothing egregious, and for those handy with EQ, I doubt you'll have to make too many large changes to get this headphone to where you want it to be. This is unlike headphones such as the LCD-2 which, to me, absolutely require EQ to be listenable (granted, they take EQ like a champ)

The Borealis is a headphone by Aurorus Audio, and MSRP's at $900. This headphone (along with its closed counterpart, the Australis) was created by two enthusiasts from the community who sought to take the best from an array of headphones and combine them in to a solid, well-rounded package. The Borealis takes particular inspiration from the Sennheiser 6X0 series (particularly, the HD 580), and seeks to retain as much of the timbre of that series as possible while making notable improvements in other areas. The HD 650 is likely one of my favorite headphones ever created, so I was looking forward to hearing a headphone that sought to emulate the characteristics that I've enjoyed for so long.


**Build & Comfort**

To start, this unit is not mine, but rather a friend's that I am borrowing for a short period. As you may notice, there is an Audeze headband attached to these. These are not stock, so I cannot comment on the build or comfort of the stock headband. These weigh in at about 485g, and with the Audeze headband, the weight was distributed evenly and did not create any hotspots. The pads themselves are very soft and plush, and I can wear these for about 3-4 hours before experiencing minor discomfort on my left ear (which seems to be slightly larger than my right ear). The opening in the pads is moderately sized and moderately deep. Folks with bigger ears might experience more discomfort after enough time, as the openings are not as well-shaped or as deep as, say, the Sennheiser HD 650. Build wise, the cups, despite their unique look and exposed driver, feel solid and well-built within my hand. I actually wouldn't feel too scared if I accidentally dropped these, which is more than I can say for most headphones. Looks can be deceiving, right?

**Tonal Balance**

Bass is extremely notable considering its open-back, dynamic driver design. Subbass is very well extended, much better than most open back dynamic drivers I've heard to date (competing well with the extension of the Utopia and HD800). It can't quite compete with good planar magnetic drivers like the Audeze LCD series, with the Borealis rolling off a few dB past 50hz or so. However, the extension and rumble is extremely notable for its driver type, and I would be comfortable saying that this is some of the best bass I've ever heard from an open-back dynamic. Subbass rumbles well without any EQ and is nicely textured, while the midbass has a tasteful, minor elevation to retain punchiness without any sense of bleeding or bloating. Very well-tuned and well-extended here.

The Borealis' midrange, to me, is a mixed package. Midrange below 1k is exquisite, nearly perfect for my tastes. The transition from upper bass to lower midrange is very reminiscent of the HD 6X0 series, the flatness as the FR approaches 1k keeps things relatively neutral in tone and non-distracting in any sense. However, there's some tonal issues to my ears from about 1k to 5k. There's a Focal-like bump at about 1.2k, pushing vocals a bit more forward than I would prefer and creating a slight boxyness to the sound. There is a noticeable downslope in the upper midrange which, to my ears, robs female vocals and electric guitars of the bite that I expect from them. This depression in the upper mids is not severe by any means, and nowhere close to the sorts of caverns you might expect from an Audeze headphone. But considering that the Borealis is often favorably compared to the 6X0 series, I do want to mention this as a possible point of contention for those who are satisfied with how the Sennheisers present the upper midrange. For my own preferences, these simply need maybe 2-3db more in the upper midrange and presence region. As it is stock, the upper midrange and transition to the low treble sounds a tad too relaxed for my tastes.

Speaking of the treble, there is a small lowtreble emphasis that I hear, but it's not enough to introduce any sort of sharpness or edge. Rather, it just alters the tone a bit. The midtreble follows suit in being more relaxed than the likes of the HD 580, though not quite as noticeable as the upper midrange. I could probably use 1-2db more overall emphasis from 6k to 8k or so to liven things up a bit and help the treble to sound a bit less rounded and lacking in energy. However, these are minor tonal nitpicks on my end, and the low/midtreble might sound perfectly flat to you. The EARS measurements indicate a sharp peak at around 8 to 9k, but my subjective listening shows this peak to be much less severe than it is... very minimal at best. The upper treble could use a bit more air up top, with me preferring a bit more around 10k or so. Overall, there is minimal splashiness and the treble is relatively even, though a very slightly relaxed listen relative to what I would have liked.

Overall, the Borealis' tonal balance is relatively inoffensive and balanced, though not without its own flaws. Smoothness is the name of the game here. I think if there was a bit more added from 3k-8k (save the lowtreble), and there was a bit more extension up top to introduce a better sense of air into the overall sound, these would be quite compelling from a pure FR standpoint. As it stands, the issues are overall tolerable, but still noticeable.

**Technical Ability**

The Borealis is quite a resolving headphone. I'm not willing to put their resolution up to par with the likes of the Utopia or the HD800, but I do think it definitely competes with other headphones in the $1,000 range, and perhaps even challenges the likes of the Focal Clear in that regard. Despite the upper midrange being depressed relative to my own preferences, the midrange detail is notable here, noticeably edging out the 6X0 series despite me preferring the midrange tone of the latter. Dynamics here are among the best I've heard from an open-back dynamic headphone, and is one of the areas where I would say the Borealis either equals or even slightly outdoes the Utopia. Kickdrums slam extremely hard on these when called for, and the Borealis is able to notate the differences in intensity throughout a track with precision and control. The resolution, in combination with the 1.2k bump, create a relatively forward and aggressive listen, which can be a good or a bad thing depending on what you want from these headphones.

I want to particularly note the timbre of these. The 6X0 are known for possessing perhaps the most accurate and natural midrange timbre of any headphone period. The Borealis does indeed come somewhat close to reaching that goal, though still falls short in the end. There's a slightly unnatural, metallic tinge to it that presents itself on most songs that I hear. I have to reiterate that this is minor. However, timbre and tone are perhaps among the most important parts of a headphone for me (which is why I've daily'd an HD 600 or HD 650 for so long), so when there's timbral issues, I tend to notice it more quickly and apparently than other areas of sound.

Soundstage is above average, extending a bit outside of your head both width and depth wise without becoming overly distracting like I believe the HD 800's stage to be. Imaging and layering are a mixed bag. It's not bad by any means, but I don't believe it to be much of an improvement over the likes of the 6X0 series. There's a degree of fuzziness to the imaging that's relatively apparent. The Utopia, as well, layers significantly better than the Borealis to the point that switching back to the Borealis can be distracting at times. Of course, the price differential between the Utopia and Borealis is significant, but considering the praise that Borealis has gotten overall, I do want to make this comparison.

Finally, speed... Despite [Marv's burst measurements indicating otherwise](https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/aurorus-borealis-measurements-and-review.9166/), to my ears the Borealis didn't sound like a particularly fast headphone. The transients and leading edge can sound a bit blunted and lazy at times, though not to the degree that it's really all that bothersome. However, I wanted to note my own subjective preferences considering the measurements for it seemed to show that it was quite a speedy headphone. Not the fastest, not the slowest there.

Just to note, I've tried this headphone on a range of sources, from the JDS Labs Atom, to the Gilmore Lite mk2, to the Niimbus US 4+. I found that a more powerful amp makes noticeable improvements to soundstage width and dynamics, while making slight improvements in pure resolution. Considering how sensitive these headphones are, however, the Borealis won't have much trouble running off of budget sources like the Atom, and I found that not too much was sacrificed doing so.

**Verdict**

The Borealis is a special headphone, in many ways. It's got its own issues, especially above 1k, and these issues can be genuinely distracting. In that sense, it's not a perfect headphone, and it's not quite the perfect successor to the 6X0 series, as much as I wanted it to be. The tonal balance overall, however, is nothing egregious, and for those handy with EQ, I doubt you'll have to make too many large changes to get this headphone to where you want it to be. However, once the tonal issues are looked past, what you have is a $900 headphone that has a natural timbre, very good resolution, exceptional dynamics, and good... everything else. In many ways, Ruck and Eudis have succeeded in creating an "all-in-one" headphone in that, if I were to own only one headphone for the rest of my life, this would be high on the list. While I don't believe the Borealis to compete as an overall package with the likes of the Utopia, or even an EQ'd LCD-4, I do think that they perform very admirably for the price, and in many ways punch slightly above their own $900 MSRP.

In that sense, it&#39;s not a perfect headphone, and it&#39;s not quite the perfect successor to the 6X0 series, as much as I wanted it to be. The tonal balance overall, however, is nothing egregious, and for those handy with EQ, I doubt you&#39;ll have to make too many large changes to get this headphone to where you want it to be. This is unlike headphones such as the LCD-2 which, to me, absolutely require EQ to be listenable (granted, they take EQ like a champ). However, once the tonal issues are looked past, what you have is a $900 headphone that has a natural timbre, very good resolution, exceptional dynamics, and good... everything else. In many ways, Ruck and Eudis have succeeded in creating an &quot;all-in-one&quot; headphone in that, if I were to own only one headphone for the rest of my life, this would be high on the list. While I don&#39;t believe the Borealis to compete as an overall package with the likes of the Utopia, or even an EQ&#39;d LCD-4, I do think that they perform very admirably for the price, and in many ways punch slightly above their own $900 MSRP.
