 2: It is supposed to be a low-light fast performer, but I did not find that the image quality I got from it was better than the 18-55 NEX kit lens. I know that sounds crazy since the kit lens is 3.5F at its widest focal length, but it is true.  I got this lens to compliment my small collection of E-mount lenses with a wide aperture lens capable of doing more than the kit lens

  Still, like I said, it is a good lens, produces good/sharp images, it is more compact than the kit lens, comes with a lens hood, and it is light on the camera. If this was priced at around $150-200 then it would be a 5 star, but at $450, I do not think is worth the money. Save your cash and continue to use the kit lens or try the SIGMA 30mm, I have not yet tried the Sigma, but it has good reviews.

 I love my NEX-7 and I think this 35mm a good all-around lens at this focal length. This lens IS SHARPER THAN THE KIT LENS, let that be known. However, At its widest aperture, the bokeh is not as nice as you would expect from a 1.8F, it is more of a blur than a creamy bokeh, which can be achieved with post-production software and save the $450

 Save your cash and continue to use the kit lens or try the SIGMA 30mm, I have not yet tried the Sigma, but it has good reviews.

 I mainly use it on my NEX-5N at indoor events with friends and family for casual shooting without a flash. At f-1.8 It's much better than the kit for this kind of use and is the reason I got it. An obvious disadvantage of any fast lens is that depth of focus can be a problem you need to be aware of

Good but WAY overpriced

8 it's very good especially in the center and at F4 it's really excellent and sharp across the frame.  Focusing seems about as good as it is with other nex lenses: a bit faster than 50mm and slower than 24mm. It also has IS which is especially useful for video and low-light (static) scenes. Another great things about the lens is that it's size is a good match for NEX bodies and it's built very nicely with thin metallic casing and mount (although most of the body is plastic like on 50mm)

I've been waiting for Sony to make a good standard prime for NEX for more than a year that I own a NEX 5n. So far NEX primes were somewhat of a mixed bag: with nice (and expensive) 24mm Zeiss and 50mm on one side and weak 16mm and fairly useless 30mm F3.5 macro on the other. I'm happy to say that 35mm is there together with the 24mm and 50mm (which I also own)

 It also has IS which is especially useful for video and low-light (static) scenes. Another great things about the lens is that it's size is a good match for NEX bodies and it's built very nicely with thin metallic casing and mount (although most of the body is plastic like on 50mm).  On the negative side of things: 1. The biggest issue is actually in using this (and any other fast) lens on NEX cameras

 It's quite good even wide open, with only slightly lower contrast and softer corners. At F2.8 it's very good especially in the center and at F4 it's really excellent and sharp across the frame.  Focusing seems about as good as it is with other nex lenses: a bit faster than 50mm and slower than 24mm

Finally a nice standard prime for NEX

  The issue is the optics just aren't good enough to even be on the shelves. It's definitely razor sharp in close focus and very sharp from about 2ft to 8ft. The problem is a lens design flaw outside of 8ft to infinity.  When shooting wide open to about f5

 I picked this up to be a 50mm walk around lens for street portraits and random fun stuff and sadly that involves many of my images to be in that 8ft to infinity mark. You'll notice that even the booked has a haze to it vs a smooth amount unfocus.  You may think this is just a one lens issue and mine was a dud. I had a replacement from amazon and went to a local camera store where I bought my a6300 and tried out 3 of their lenses

Edit 8/19/15 I ordered a new lens and the noise and vibration were not evident on the new lens. I've taken some photos and really like the images, especially some that I took with low light. I'll admit that I don't have much experience with buying or using photo equipment as this is a new thing I'm starting to get into, but spending the $450 for this bad boy was well worth it for the kind images I'm getting with it on my NEX-6. The only downfall I see in the image quality is the relatively loud chomatic aberrations that show up when shooting outdoors. Post process can reduce this but it's annoying to deal with

This is a nice lens, for a long time I was thinking about getting a fixed aperture lens like this. It has a nice depth of field on my APS-C Cropped sensor. I'm generally happy with it. It does give a little bit of chromatic aberration which is fixable in Photoshop
