The maximum f-stop is f/5.6 at 200mm, where the lens loses a bit of sharpness. But it still scores 3,393 lines, with solid perofrmance through most of the frame. Edges are drifting toward the soft side, at 2,478 lines, which can be an issue if you're making huge enlargements, but isn't anything to worry about in most situations

 One key advantage most mirrorless cameras have over DSLR's is light weight. You lose some of this when you go full-frame. The A6000 (which I also own) and the A6300 are great small cameras systems and I hope Sony will continue to develop more compact and high-quality APS-C lenses.

 However, this lens/camera combo doesn't come close to my Canon 5D3 with the white Canon 70-300mm L IS lens. I hope a firmware update will help solve this but I am disappointed by the slow autofocus. The Sony/Zeiss 16-70 doesn't seem to have this problem. AF does speed up a bit when you select the limited range (3M to infinity)

 The good news is that optically it is a real good performer, however, there are several negatives which caused me to rate it only 3 stars. The biggest is the slow autofocus when the lens is set to the full range. Sometimes the lens hunts for several seconds, even in good light which I find unacceptable. I am also using this lens with the A6300 which is supposed to have the fastest autofocus in the Sony E-mount line

 The Sony/Zeiss 16-70 doesn't seem to have this problem. AF does speed up a bit when you select the limited range (3M to infinity). I also find the lens a bit top heavy for the A6300, and the lack of a tripod collar seems like an oversight for such a heavy lens.  I should also note that I have no immediate plans to upgrade to the A7 FF line

I didn't want to give this 1 star because I own many Sony lenses and have typically had great experiences with them. I know that if this worked for me on my A6300, that I probably would have really liked it. As it stands I just want people to be aware of my problem with the lens. I was not able to find focus at most of the focal lengths, even in manual focus

 This is one of the first lenses I received from Amazon with lacking packaging so that might be the culprit. I didn't want to order another one of these just yet but I'll probably try again at some point in the future and update my review.

Just Didn't Work for Me

 It is light and for the size I found balances well on an a7 series body. Nothing groundbreaking, but its the only option really for a 'travel' size zoom in the Sony lineup. Optically slightly above average.

..auto-focus is a known issue as focal length increases but the ass-backwards fly-by-wire manual focus of this lens just renders it essentially useless for what I needed it to do.

 My a6000 has had issues with the autofocus choosing to focus on the closest object rather than the obvious animal in the viewfinder. Expensive at $1200. My previous SAL70-300 with LA-EA1 adapter had drawbacks but only cost me a total of $600.  Overall, I'm very happy with this lens

 The list of cons is completely outweighed, in my opinion, by having native autofocus and a 300mm focal length.

5-5.6 aperture means you need a lot of light or higher ISO to use if shooting wildlife. compared to other e-mount lenses this is quite heavy, but if you use telephotos, you get heavy lenses. autofocus is not as fast as some e-mount primes, and does miss on occasion

I was very excited to see a telephoto by sony for e-mount. I had been using the SAL 70-300G SSM with the LA-EA1 adapter for a while, and was growing tired of manual focus. Holy cow what a lense! This thing rivals my Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS in weight and girth (unscientific).  Pros: + Great image quality (caveat below) + Nice feel on zoom ring + So far I feel the stabilization is working decent + Hood is nice and not dramatic (think referenced canon lense above) + Really nice reach, decent aperture  Cons - Pretty bulky on an A6300 - Focus ring is a bit close to body and hard to use while holding lense, this would have benefited from a tripod collar - REALLY slow focus in low light, like really slow. That's why I say this is an outdoor lense only or good lighting indoor

 Little to no chromatic aberration. Sharp in bright light. Constant aperture.  Cons: Size

 Dwarfs the 55-210mm when set side by side. Very long barrel means travel photographers have to carry larger bags. Weight. This is a very heavy lens throwing off the balance of any of the a6000 models
