 Hi, bossy and today I have Sony's z1 are high-end headphones now I met now it's an order of Sony back in 2011 at one of the Fuji Arabic headphone festivals and then and every Six months at the festival since then I've asked him the same question When are you going to produce an r10 replacement now the MDR r10s were produced in? 1989 and were sold for about 10 years and were you know at the time you know an ultra high-end headphone where you know and Even afterwards there were still a very legendary headphone with people paying up to six to seven thousand dollars for a pair and They have it's been you know everyone's been looking out for Sony to produce a successor and since Sony was in the red for a very long time They it's been you know hard to kind of for them to I guess justify producing high-end gear until recently until they prove them that They could produce good. You know successful consumer goods, so now they've worked their way up to it Prior to that of course with the good old z7s and and looking at these just look at the the size comparison these look the the z7 look kind of puny Against the the the z1 are there. They're quite a bit smaller Quite a bit smaller headphones. You know the the big cups of the Z1 are you know making these feel inadequate now, so they're but the R10s when they were new were $2,600 with a you know fancy leather case and all that and $2,600 back in 1989 is probably about over $4,000 now So these at around the $2,000 mark are actually kind of relatively a bargain all things considering and they're light headphones They're not heavy at all You know you have we've been used to getting plain and magnetic headphones Which are quite heavy and quite expensive, but these are if anything quite reasonable, and I've seen the old person Online who seemed to have got the odd bargain way below retail so all things considered for a top-end headphone They certainly look like being the the bargain option there So as headphones go they you know they're fairly conventional if you looked at the you know the z7 you're looking at much the same Kind of thing they're very comfortable

You know ear pads that you have here And you've got big drivers now the the big driver thing if I just pop off a cup not a cup an ear pad You have these big 70 millimeter drivers now Sony's been going down the road of big drivers for quite a while now there's the ma 900s which were very kind of obscure headphones, but they started off a trend with with you know fairly inexpensive models that This big driver is what the design they've settled on and it came with much my first much like my first impressions that they to me they were You know like listening to you know and a dynamic driver pretending to be a planar magnetic They have you know they have a big authoritative and very detailed base, which is one of the main things that you got about with Planar magnetic headphones now they also use the same cable system as the z7 so you have 3

 These do fantastically, and they do have many Good aspects especially the level of detail retrieval is very high even though with a kind of darker tuning It's not always so noticeable through the bass and mid-range. You know the the detail that came out was fantastic especially But you know if you do want a kind of neutral dead tuning, and they're not going to give you focals utopias for half the price For example, they're going I think they're more interesting to listen with than Sennheiser's HD800s. They're they're more More in tune with the music, and they're not just one presentation, which the HD800s have They're not quite as balanced to say mr. Speaker's ethos which tend to be probably their only imbalance is the Sort of the the mid bass is a little bit strong I mean these just have strong bass, and they're not shy of it not excessively strong, but quite strong I think they're not shy of their own character whereas everything else is trying to hit you know some kind of perfect ideal These are trying to entertain you They're very much entertaining pair of cans So yeah, that's a kind of tough one on these I like them more than I've spent more time with them and the utopias aren't here to seduce me with their ridiculous levels of detail So I mean I could very much live with a pair of these they work with most genres of music much better Especially stuff

 These are fantastic. They'll give you that They are in many ways a more relaxing all-rounder than Other headphones I have here except maybe the mr. Speaker's ethos which tend to hit the spot now are heading a little bit towards the darker side of things with the latest tunings So in the end yes, I'm going to say a big yes for these what these really knocked off the peg was the $2,000 ultrason edition 8 ex which I just heard recently which just don't have that detail retrieval that you should get for $2,000 in a closed pair of cans while they're too large They're not portable you're not going to take them out in the you know the the bustle train with you ideally They are I reckon a fantastic effort from Sony and well whether they'll be a true successor because they're to the r10s Well, that's going to be probably hotly debated, but in a true example of of sony's Technological and engineering ability and ability to produce a fantastic product. These are definitely a good example So I don't know if I can really adequately describe These versus you know other headphones, but I hope you like what I attempted to do all the same And if you did give it a thumbs up also subscribe if you'd like to see more videos, and I'll see you online

Sony MDR-Z1R Headphones Review - Are these the new legendary headphones from Sony?

* piercing treble, even after two months of usage, sometimes I had to put them off after 5 minutes, sometimes I could survive two hours with them. * lack of warmth in the base (drop around 100Hz) results in dry, analytical sound, very annoying while trying to enjoy the music, not analysing music. * bass gets distorted very easily when bass-heavy music is played louder. * my ears are touching inside of the cups, annoying and painful; the comfort of these headphones is so over-hyped!

 My final words on how I graded the Sony MDR-Z1R: Comfort - five stars. No getting around it. Value for money - two stars. These should be go-to headphones for an audiophile like me and for the price tag

 I jumped on these as soon as they became available. Coming after the very mixed reviews of the MDR-Z7 and with the design being both bold and touted as revolutionary, and with 70 mm drivers to boot, I didn't think I could go wrong and was willing to absorb the $2,200 price tag. So I get the headphones. And mind you that I am comparing them to a collection consisting of high-end cans from Sennheiser, Fostex, MrSpeakers and Audeze

 Some reverberation at the lowest frequencies in my test tracks but it works. Mid range is forward enough but bleeds too easily into the treble. And it's in the treble where these get into trouble. There are frequency spikes in the treble range which can be sharp and fatiguing

Overpriced for the sound signature performance

 Let's see, the ear pads are very ample, there's lots of room in here for your ears, they're shaped like an ear and the pads are a nice grade of memory foam so that's very very nice. All in all, I would say this is, it's 380 something grams I think, it's very very comfortable to wear so full marks to Sony in terms of comfort and wearability on these headphones. There's two major kind of technological things, oh I should go through cables really quick, the first cable is a 3 meter cable so it's pretty long, has this ridged insulator on it. Sony uses this a lot in their headphones, this particular cable and I like it because it's not very microphonic but I'll caution you that if you're here in Montana and you're outside and it's cold it gets very very stiff so it's kind of an odd cable in that way

 Hi, Tile from Interfidelity here. Today we're going to talk about a headphone that I've long wanted to get my hands on and have a listen to. This is the new Sony MDR-Z1R, it's their flagship headphone, it's $2,299. It's a full-sized, circumoral, sealed headphone, although it doesn't seal as much as some sealed headphones do, I would almost call it semi-open, but it's a really very nicely designed headphone, it has a leather outer on the headband, the interior of the headband is beta titanium so it's very very flexible, it has very nice caliper pressure, it's very comfortable when you wear it in terms of the caliper pressure and fits very nicely

 Sony has created, let's see if I can, if you can see this, the earcups have a little protrusion on the bottom part of the earcup here that tucks nicely under the ear so that ear pads really do mate very very well with the side of your head and seal very well. The extension arms are aluminum, they work very nicely and detented, there's some laser etched markings here that show you how far each headband is extended so you can adjust them to the same number when you're looking at them and they adjust very nicely. The hangers are aluminum and in the bottom of the hanger is an integral connector that unscrews and it is a 3.5mm TRS plug and a jack in here that's threaded so that when you put the connector on and thread it back into position it remains nice and tight

 Also, I felt that I needed some variety in the character of my headphones, therefore I just pulled the trigger on the MDR-Z1R and prayed for the best (and also because there was a good return policy). Oh boy was I blown away.

Ages ago when I was new to the hobby, I tried the HD800S and the MDR-Z1R at a local audio store and walked away feeling absolutely impressed by the 800S. The Z1R on an A-B session stood no chance against the 800S, it felt muffled and bloated in the bass. Reading online reviews about the MDR-Z1R also further cemented my decision to go with the 800S. As such, I vowed from that day to never touch the Z1R again.

Oh boy was I wrong.

In these few months, I bought the IER-M9 and the IER-Z1R. Both IEMs are so fantastic that I decided to keep them for different listening moods. The one thing I learnt having owned Sony IEMs (N3, M9, Z1R) is that their build quality is seriously second to none. Anyway, I wanted to venture into high end closed back headphones, and wanted something that would definitely last. Also, I felt that I needed some variety in the character of my headphones, therefore I just pulled the trigger on the MDR-Z1R and prayed for the best (and also because there was a good return policy). 

Oh boy was I blown away.

I slept on the MDR-Z1R so hard because it was not as bright as the 800S. They don’t sweep you off your feet at first, but these headphones are definitely up there with the best. Despite being closed backs, they retain a wide soundstage and have great detail retrieval (though not to the extent of the 800S). Sonically, they are warm sounding, with the best bass reproduction on any headphone I have ever tried. Punchy and detailed, yet controlled and refined. It is a Sony characteristic after all. The mids are thick and feel full while the highs are sparkly enough without being fatiguing. Add these all together, and you get one of the most engaging headphone ever built. I definitely regretted sleeping on these, but I have finally found something to contrast my 800S. 

Quick Comparison with HD800S:

For soundstage, the 800S feels like a concert hall, while the Z1R feels like you’re listening in a music room (backstage kinda vibe). Both are enjoyable to have, but depends on the track you listen to.

Genre wise, if I want something that feels grand like classical, with the music commanding me to listen attentively, the 800S is the way to go. But when I just want to sit back and chill, having the music warmly envelope me, then it’ll be the MDR-Z1R.

The main takeaway is, take the online bashing on the MDR-Z1R (or any headphones, really) with a pinch of salt, and audition them yourselves to see if you like them. While pulling the trigger on the MDR-Z1R so abruptly was not the best action I should have taken, it allowed me to relearn something so simple in the hobby - trust only your own ears.

They're lauded by critics because of its frequency response and how it presents music inaccurately (which I can say is partially true, especially compared to the M9) but if you look at what users say about owning them you'll see it's one of the top most used headphones out of their collection. 

I've had the Z1R for a year and half now and I've put a *lot* of miles on them. I'm already on my 2nd set of earpads (Dekoni Elite sheepskin) and I've been enjoying them all this time. The build quality is still superb. No creaks or rattles.

What an enviable collection!

I am very fond of my lowly XBA-N3, lovely tone and very tightly controlled bass. The build is very impressive and it isn't an expensive earphone. I buy what interests me and try not to get caught up in hype and popular opinion.

“HD800S is my endgame...” The MDR-Z1R proves that wrong.

 These are easily the most comfortable headphones next my Senni HD800S. B. Bass resonse - tick. I love my Senni’s but I wanted something different - here I got it, brassy headphones with a great lower range response

 And so today we are enjoying Sam Adams and for personally being a lifelong bass stater, I am quite partial to the Sam Adams, which is a Boston lager. And Sam Adams, you know, founding father, history, and it got us thinking about a company with a long history and that's Sony. So essentially this is a new segment we're going to be doing where we essentially pour a glass of specific beer and we talk about a specific headphone and we just kind of take it from there

 They're now using, instead of that biocellulose way back in the 80s, this is a magnesium driver, and it's a really fun sounding headphone. Yeah, so I was going to say, with a lot of Sony stuff, they're either warm sounding or fun sounding signature-wise. Is this any different? Nope. This is a V-shape, and if you're not familiar with V-shape, that typically means it's tipped up on the top end, tipped up on the bottom end, so there's a lot of top end energy and a lot of bass

 It's definitely really cool looking, it's extremely comfortable, very light, I can easily let it disappear on my head for long periods of time. Nice. I think it's a good pairing, especially for the Sam Adams, too. Good pairing for the Sam Adams

 These Z1Rs are fucking incredible. The soundstage is huge, they are incredibly comfortable, the treble a mids are very natural/clean, and the bass is rich and deep but not boomy.

 It turns out, the InnerFidelity review is exactly right. The Z1R has a bit too much bass, although that didn't bother me much. What I could not accept was the treble peak that made orchestral strings sound unnatural. I listen mainly to jazz and classical music, and orchestral music just sounds wrong on the Z1R

 Amazingly, Sony has a much better headphone, the MDR-1AM2, which is more natural sounding, with only a small emphasis in the bass and treble. So, if you are looking at the Z1R, consider the much less expensive MDR-1AM2. Or, in the $2,000 price range, a much better headphone is the Ether 2 from MrSpeakers (now Dan Clark Audio).

 What I could not accept was the treble peak that made orchestral strings sound unnatural. I listen mainly to jazz and classical music, and orchestral music just sounds wrong on the Z1R. Amazingly, Sony has a much better headphone, the MDR-1AM2, which is more natural sounding, with only a small emphasis in the bass and treble. So, if you are looking at the Z1R, consider the much less expensive MDR-1AM2

Disappointing sound quality

I went and bought the HD650's. I thought they'd be a huge upgrade from my HD598's. They were not. They were great, but it turns out I was looking for a different sound. That's when I went to my local dealer and asked to audition the SR325's. I brought them home, and made a bet with the wife. 

She started singing almost immediately and when I walked in and grinned, she made a mad face and continued singing. 

I then caught her making that stupid audiophile face we all make when our new gear shows us a new part or phrase to our favorite music. 

Low and behold, they were on sale and I bought a new pair. These are them. 

Thoughts?

My wife put on my MDR-Z1R and listened to some music. Her verdict? "There's too much sound."
