Sony XE300 Review and Sound Test - What are they doing?

 This one fires out of the narrow strip of fabric. You have to pay attention to what direction that's pointing, as it has a huge impact on the sound.  Basically there are better speakers in this price range. It's hard to find a good reason to recommend this speaker

Sony usually makes excellent audio equipment and they charge a premium for it. In this case, they made a few missteps.  SOUND The out of the box sound quality is surprisingly subpar. It sounds muddled and it's VERY heavy on the bass

 A similar speaker from JBL has those options, at a lower price point. This one is pretty bare bones when it comes to features.  BATTERY The battery life is legit. I've use this to play a few hours of music and roughly 18hrs of standby and phone calls

 The EQ in Sony's Music Center app helps some when raising the mids and highs, but doesn't totally fix the issue. In my personal opinion, you'd be better served by something like the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 4 which can routinely be found on sale for much less than this speaker. My old JBL Charge 4 is much more clear than the Sony, but doesn't have as much bass. My JBL Boombox 3 blows this out of the water, but is also much more expensive

This isn't necessarily a bad speaker, but it's not great either and there are definitely better choices out there

Decent speaker held back by a few flaws

So let me start off by saying I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I love listening to music; at work, in the car and at home, so I own plenty of bluetooth speakers and what better way to test the XE300 then by doing a blind test against some of them.  I put the Sony up against the Sonos Roam, the Soundcore Flare 2 and the Soundcore Boombox Motion Plus. Yes I know they aren't all marketed as equal, but the prices are actually all pretty close (except for the Flare).  After connecting them to my Samsung S22 Ultra each, I played 2 different songs on each device

I'm not sure if this can be fixed by a firmware update or maybe we just got a bad speaker but I was very surprised on how bad the sound was.  I can't really recommend this portable speaker at all. What happened to the once mighty Sony??????

 Contrary to what Sony says, unless mine is defective, this speaker does not have 24hr battery life. More like 18hrs but that's not really a big issue. Still, I expected better from Sony for this price. My Harmon Kardon, in a similar price class, blows this one away in all areas!

LOOKS NICE BUT SUB-PAR PERFORMANCE!

 For starters from a sound quality stand point the XE300 sounds very muffled and narrow when compared to the XB33. But also from a design stand point the XE300 is a little larger than the XB33 now. So throwing it into your back pack isn't as easy when compared to the XB33. And also the XE300 no longer has a light feature like the XB33… something that could have been a deciding factor for some people

 So with all that being said, sound quality wise the XB33 easily out performs the XE300. The XB33 simply sounds more open than the XE300, its bass doesn't sound as muffled when in person, and it also gets noticeably louder as well. But finally lets talk about pairing this speaker up with other speakers. The Sony XE300 is using Sony's Party Connect

 So yeah, I really do feel that its a shame that the XE300 doesn't have a light feature cause I feel Sony really knocked it out of the park with their XB33. But now lets talk about tech specs. Regarding battery life, the XE300 has an advertised battery life of 24 hours. Now with both of these speakers I did find that you get a very slight performance boost if you use them while they're plugged in

 But the XE300 now mostly has a silicone wrapped body and some hints of fabric. Now this silicone makes this speaker feel very premium, very Bose like cause this is what Bose does. But this silicone body is a scratch magnet compared to the mostly fabric wrapped body that you'll find on the XB33. So over all from a durability and portability stand point the XB33 is my choice here cause its smaller than the XE300, its not going to collect as many scratches, and just like with the XE300 its IP67 rated meaning that its both water and dust resistant

I have other speakers half the size and weight that sound much much better but lack the battery life. I did get rained on at one point, not very hard, but the speaker had no problems with a bit of moisture

Ver well designed but was expecting better sound quality from this higher cost speaker. The bass sounds contained and boxed up to not allow the other frequencies to sound their best. The eq in the app can only do so much. If it allowed for a well rounded and balanced sound it would have been a winner
