In your opinion, what is the best laptop for Linux right now?

I've been enjoying my System76 Lemur Pro. My only real complaints are that the mic and webcam are pretty bad, and the speakers are weak. But it has a ton of battery life, and it should be easy to upgrade and repair as far as RAM/hd/battery/etc. It also has Coreboot so it is super fast to start up, and System76 is good at pushing out firmware updates to fix known issues.

Clueless as to which laptop I should buy for my use case

Just picked up a System76 Lemur Pro with an i7 and base ram and storage. Bought my own ram and ssd off Amazon to get 40gb ram and over a tb storage for around 1700 including shipping and what not. Installation took about 10 minutes and overall pop os, which ships with most System76 laptops, is really polished and similar to MacOS with the bubbly look and the "it just works" feel to it. Highly highly highly recommend.

A linux laptop that doesn't have compromises in display and build quality.

I'll put in a word for something no one else has mentioned: System76's Lemur Pro. It has a good build quality (maybe not quite as nice as some of the others, but still quite usable with any real issues that I've encountered).
