 In October of 1972, a Japanese firm that goes by the name of Panasonic today released a mid-range turntable with direct drive technology. This turntable would go on to change absolutely everything and pave the way for a new era of DJs. Of course, I'm talking about the Technics SL1200. Hi guys, welcome back to Crossfader, my name is DJ Holland and today on Trial and Tested we're taking a look back at the most important piece of DJ hardware there has ever been, the Technics SL1200 series

 The other thing to check on these decks is the RCA cable and the earth lead. Now the Mark 7 has removable and replaceable RCA cables and earth lead but the originals do not and these do wear over time so make sure you've got a good strong connection from these. If not again you can go get these serviced or changed out. There's a lot of companies now that make modifications to these decks to enable replaceable cables to be fitted however these can sometimes have a detrimental effect on the audio quality so it's completely up to you what matters to you more

 But be wary of decks that have already had the conversion done and if they have had a conversion done do ask who did it and what parts we used. Another popular mod is the internal grounding. Again this can really have a negative effect on the sound quality so make sure you do your homework before purchasing a set of decks that have had modifications done to them. A good indication of a deck that's previously been serviced or repaired is screws on the bottom base plate

 You see, back in the day when they were belt driven turntables, these were better for acoustic purposes, but it meant that the rubber band that drove the turntable platter would take a long time to get it up to speed. So any input a DJ would make on the platter itself, maybe scrubbing it to slow it down or twisting the spindle to speed the platter up, that action would take a while to correspond and that would engage a lot of wow and a lot of flutter. Now, back in the days of playing vinyl, when you sped up a record or slowed it down, the pitch would change because this playback speed was changing, there was no such thing as master tempo or pitch lock as we know it in the modern day. So a turntable that could keep its speed and get back up to speed very quickly when you make adjustments was vital for making sure the audio quality remained high throughout the playback and the performance

The history of the Technics SL1200 - Tried & Tested

The Technics SL-1200MK2 is technically vintage (it was introduced in 1979), yet it is still produced today and is often hailed as one of the grand standards of turntables. I've heard some people say the older MK2s outperform the newest MK7s.

Which vintage turntable do you think outperforms the modern ones?

 Let's the cartridge speak for itself. IMO, A-T and Denon cart.s are the ones to use with this.  One star taken off since if it had auto-return and maybe a straight tonearm it would be perfection

Excellent for the price

 On a well designed direct drive turntable that should not be audible but on some of the clones they do tend to have noisier motors on them. And an easy way to avoid that entirely is to go with a belt drive system where you move the motor as far away as possible from the platter bearing and the motor's own vibrations are isolated from the plinth and isolated from the platter by the rubber belt. These turntables only need very occasional maintenance. There's a bearing down here that just needs a couple drops of oil every thousand hours I believe of playback time

 In terms of cartridge compatibility these turntables are very versatile. It has a medium mass tone arm so it's compatible with most modern cartridges. Has a half inch mount obviously and a standard head shell mount. It has all the usual adjustments for vertical tracking force and anti-skate but one thing this turntable has that many don't is an adjustable vertical tracking angle here

 This is just a quick video about my Technics SL1200 Mk2. I bought this turntable around 2012 to replace my old Iowa LX100 which is a linear tracking front loading type. That turntable was kind of unreliable and sounded pretty good actually for a linear tracker but I wanted something that was simple, straightforward, easy to find parts for and most of all reliable. This turntable is all of those things

 It's got the pitch control which I just leave locked at zero. It does have this pop-up light for cueing the record which can be handy if you're in a dark room. Other than that it's pretty straightforward. So this turntable has a pretty long history

Look up the model number and maker whenever you are browsing and don’t trust eBay for prices (they always want the most money). Quality tables are going to hold their value, such as the Technics SL-1200. You aren’t going to walk into a thrift store and buy it off the shelf for a $1 or less (and everyone on here that says they got one relatively recent for a ridiculously low price like that are *lying to you* for karma points).

If I’m looking to spend around 250 on a turntable what we be a good beginner option? I saw that people don’t really like the lp60x

 I informed the seller but then due to the low price I ordered a new needle through Amazon for 13$ and it worked perfectly. I'm satisfied of this product!

The turntable came in well packed. No external damages or scratches. The whole equipment looked like new. The only problem was that the arm holding the cartridge was not properly secured and the needle got damaged during the transportation

Technics Turntable

 If you wanted to buy a new turntable that had the same performance as this, you'd pay far more than $400 or $500. You'd usually pay double that. So if you look at that through that lens and through that perspective, I would suggest the 1200s out there represent excellent bang for your dollar. So what is the bottom line? For me personally, I think the Technics SL1200MK2 is so much more than a DJ turntable

 For example, when compared to my Fluance RT85 and compared to my Project Debut Carbon Turntable, the MK2 had more of a pronounced bottom end and music had more depth to it and more clarity for lack of a better term. When it came time to set up my MK2, I tried a variety of different cartridges. These are the cartridges I tend to use in all my turntables, the ones I use when I was comparing turntables. The first one I tried on the MK2 was my Nagaoka MP110

 I can live with it. In terms of price, I know a lot of people suggest that the 1200s are overpriced. And the cost of these things is definitely going up. But you can still find decent ones out there, sort of between $400 and $500 USD

The obvious choice is the Technics sl-1200. Pioneer and Reloop also make tables with enough torque to DJ also. I would not recommend Audiotechnica for a DJ table. As for sound quality, in the mid-range of tables,  most of it boils down to the cartridge and stylus

Main reason for it would be home listening and ripping records but I would also like to add another one and be able to DJ in the future on it. 

I'm looking in adding a XONE 23(not sure if I should get the C version yet) as well and a pair of speakers, either my HS5 or a new pair.

I'm not really sure if I should buy a contemporary turntable with USB (like the Audio Technica ones) or a used one with USB Phono. Any idea which one would have the best audio quality ?
