is this considered a good setup for beginners? is there anything I could swap to maybe be cheaper? I'm in the UK and a lot of the stuff I've been recommended isn't available so far.

At this price point the speakers will make a much bigger impact on the sound than the quality of the turntable. If you are willing to go "hunt" for second hand equipment you should consider the Technics SL-BD20 and upgrade the cartridge on it instead of spending 350 pounds on a ProJect. For that price (180 pounds) you should also be able to find a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 100's. As far as the amp goes I would suggest looking at some NAD's (NAD C326BEE for example).

Found a Grado Red on a SL-BD-20D today?

Seem like a fairly expensive needle on a low tier table but it was 12 bucks and I needed a belt for a different table anyway. I have a Grado Black on my SL-1200 (which I never really liked) and low an behold it sounds great once I swapped the needles. The SL-BD20D had the Grado on it labeled XG, which I think is a GR-1 but P-mount?.
