TP-Link Archer A7 vs Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD

Actually I don't have a lot of experience with all this stuff, but have spent time through my years of using computers that I kind of learned my way around. I used the internet extensively to search for answers and understand terms that were new to me. Because I have so many wireless devices setup, I didn't want to have to set them up again so I used my old network name and password. With the new Archer A7, I am finally getting the internet speed I've been paying for and so far, haven't had a drop since I used a new ethernet cable and the included adapter

I am currently using a Motorola MB8600 modem and a TP-Link AC1750 Archer A7 router. I also have Comcast Xfinity 200mb for my internet. I have had almost nothing but problems with the Archer A7, it worked fine for about a week, but now it disconnects 3-5 times a day; and I am pretty sick of not having stable internet. For the record, I am 95% certain it s the router to blame, as when I plug my PC into the modem, I have internet, but when I plug it into the router again, I lose that internet

The good: - super stable, I haven't had the devices crash in the month I've had it (unlike the tplink it replaced, which crashed daily) - nice, if simple, ui, if you don't mind doing all config via a mobile app. - great coverage: Amplifi + 2 mesh extenders more than well covers more than an acre sized lot + buildings - ipv6 that "just works" The bad: - Config is buggy: I naively set my 2.4ghz channel to 40mhz bandwidth which killed the wifi (bad idea in a heavily congested area). fixing it it in the config software didn't actually reset the bandwidth to 20mhz, only a hard reset did

I was able to set up the VPN function so every device connected to the network automatically had the VPN but there was a severe downside I was not aware of. Normally my download speed is 80 Mbit/ps and upload is 15Mbit/ps. With the VPN function enable it restricts the download speed to what your upload speed capablity is due to how VPNs function. It hides the IP address by sending packets of data in and out simultainteously and therefor can on recieve data as fast as it can upload data

Whilst individually purchased mesh points can be connected to any router, even non-Amplifi routers, *mesh points purchased in a set, can only be connected to the router it came with*! These have been hardcoded to prevent connection to another router, even another identical Amplifi router!! There is nothing support can or is willing to do. They cannot send a firmware update to release the hardcoded lock, and they are unwilling to exchange these perfectly functional mesh points for ones that can be connected to the new router. In other words, if the router fails, and it will, you can trash the mesh points too, even though they are technically functional. I am returning my new set as soon as I figure out what competing mesh system I will get instead
