Not everyone needs a top-of-the-line high-performance external hard drive. If you're looking for a simple, easy-to-use model with many storage capacity options, look no further than the Western Digital Elements. The Elements does not use AC power as it is entirely powered by USB. Although this model is far from the fastest, it shows comparable results to most HDD models during our write and read speed assessment. Best of all, it's affordable. While some external hard drives can cost several hundred dollars, the lower memory capacity versions of the WD Elements will hardly hit your pocketbook. 
Although the Western Digital Elements shows similar speeds to most of the other HDD models, it was substantially slower than the best. It's also only offered in one to five terabyte versions. If you know that you need a lot of memory and want to write and read your data quickly, you will need to invest in a higher-performing drive. We are a bit wary of the construction of the Elements. While several other models boast rubber coating, metal plating, or actual shockproof certifications, this device seems to be a bit susceptible to damage if dropped on a hard surface. Despite our small list of flaws, we think the Western Digital Elements is a fantastic option for those shopping for a quality external HDD on a tighter budget.

5 inch hard drive, it's just going to be powered off of a USB, it only has a USB cord, and there's no power button on the hard drive itself, you just plug it in and it automatically turns on. So of course people, the next question we'll have is can I run it off a USB power from my media player or a smart TV, and for me I can say yes, I'm using my LG TV right now, it's plugged in directly into the TV, the hard drive, and it's powering it, as you can see there's some files, I copied over a video of me unboxing the LG smart watch from Google and LG, and it's playing just fine. So my smart TV is capable of powering it and playing videos just fine, my media players in my home are capable of doing it too, but the question is whether it will work for you or not is purely dependent on the device that's playing the hard drive, okay, different devices will behave differently. The next question people are most likely going to ask is what if I fill the entire 1TB hard drive with random pictures and videos, will my media player or smart TV handle all those media files and play them, again that's purely dependent on your device, if your media player or smart TV is really slow, then probably not, it might just time out, it might not even read the hard drive, if you have a really good media player, then it's possible

 So I'm going to give this device an 8 out of a 10, and the first thing I want to mention, the first great thing is of course the price, that's the reason I bought this, I just quickly picked it off the shelf, I was like this is the hard drive for me, because most hard drives priced at the same price range are usually 500GB, not a terabyte like this one. The other thing is of course it's very mobile, because it's a 2.5 inch hard drive, it's easy to carry, you can just put it in your bag if you have a purse. It does of course support USB 2

 So anyway, so this is the hard drive, extremely light, very very light actually. This should be a 2.5 inch hard drive, if you don't know what that means, it just basically means it's small compared to your regular external hard drive size. So basically, I'm going to do the unboxing right now and I'm not going to record the review segment right away

 Although I understand how drive capacities are measured I still think it’s not ethical to call something a 4GB drive when the maximum formatted data capacity is only 3.63GB. But the game-changer is that a storage drive that is clearly intended for portability has such a poorly designed interface cable access port. My data is too valuable to trust it to something that might unplug if the cat steps on it

 When you plug the included data cable, or any cable you have been misdirected to go out and buy, into the port it can’t seat fully into it - the opening in the plastic case is too small so no matter what you do you can’t insert the cable end fully into the port. The result is that it is just barely in place and a tiny tug or flick of the finger and the cable either loses contact or falls our completely. That is a tragic design error because no matter what the ads tell you the absolute number one task of a data drive is reliability - if it can’t safeguard your data it is useless, and designing a portable storage device that doesn’t have a way of inserting the connecting cable firmly and tightly, is basically useless. All WD would have to do is retool the plastic case slightly to enlarge the data port area and it would make this a tremendously more reliable drive

 That is a tragic design error because no matter what the ads tell you the absolute number one task of a data drive is reliability - if it can’t safeguard your data it is useless, and designing a portable storage device that doesn’t have a way of inserting the connecting cable firmly and tightly, is basically useless. YES OR NO  People rate on emotions, sometimes minutes after the product is delivered to their door. Clicking the I love it button is the easy way out

 No issues there. What the fatal flaw is has to do with how the plastic case is designed in the area of the data port, something some of the others have misidentified as WD including an inferior cable (with the suggestion that can be fixed by going out and buying another one). Nope, that’s not the issue at all. The problem is that the actual port is mechanically an integral part of the drive chassis, which just lays in the case and wiggles around a little

Three failing drives out of the last six purchased. Guess it's time for a new brand

 The others are all fine (thus far); some have been in use for years. If you buy these, SAVE THE PACKAGING TO RETURN TO AMAZON. As I said, of the most recent six I have purchased, 1/3 have failed almost out of the box. Amazon makes return easy so do yourself a favor and hold onto the packaging

I'm not a very technically-inclined person , so if you're like me, you will have no issues getting this product up and running.  It took less than 5 min to format and I was transferring my MP3 library from my desktop to this compact external hard drive in no time flat.  Haven't really "tested it out" much, but so far I am impressed. I saw some negative reviews but haven't experienced any of those issues
