my dad bought them 25 years ago and they still go strong against newer (cheaper) headphones even tho i had to change the foam earcups. As others said a lot of headphones were released a lot of time ago but still go strong (and are still for sale, unlike my sonys) like HD 600, AKG K712 Pro, etc..

I went around one day in Sydney and tested all the earphones I could find in 3 stores and was just stunned by the performance difference in the Sennheiser compared to the rest. It was a huge difference.

COMFORT First things first. In my opinion these things have way too loose of a fit. Compared to Sennheiser 650s, which are snug and somewhat tight, these feel more like they'll fall off my head. SOUND These headphones tend to have a massive dip in the upper mids

Clear: It’s pretty crazy how comfortable the Clears are for how heavy they are. They are so perfectly balanced on my head that I do forget I have headphones on sometimes.

Ultimately I am returning the K702 because the a) the 2khz hump is annoying to my ears, and b) the very wide sound stage is a bit too wide and unfocused. When I take them off and put my Senns back on, every instrument is immediately restored to perfect placement, but with the AKGs, it’s hard to place exactly where an instrument is in the mix. Instruments kind of dance from far left to far right. You don’t feel as close to the instruments as you do with Sennheiser, but I’d take the ‘intimacy’ of Sennheiser to get the accurate imaging

I’m not a headphone expert, though I have been using them in one form or another dating back to 1977, so a good 40 years on everything from the old Koss white eggshell looking things to Sony’s 1980s on the ear to noise canceling Sony and Bose phones. But for music (hi-fi) my AKGs had been my reference until they were damaged. But this review concerns some AKG K-712s that I purchased at the same time as the Sennheisers specifically to test. In truth I picked up the AKGs after being disappointed with the HD600s; feeling like something was missing

There are so many other great headphones for this kind of money! I think I would have kept them if they were about $175 but definitely not the mid $300 range. I hope this helps someone make the right decision!

Clearly the Grado's at $100 are the least expensive with the Momentum jumping up markedly to $299, while the more recently acquired Sennheiser HD600 hit the $400 mark. When a number of them are playing notes together the Grado's sounded smeared compared to the HD600s. Not unlike a poorly created JPEG from a digital point-n-shoot versus a well-made JPEG from an original RAW processed via Adobe Lightroom. Details are are lost in the former, but the latter does a far superior job of keeping the detail even in the process of losing information

I paired these headphones with Ear Studio, ES 100 Bluetooth reciever. This allows you to adjust the output that the headphones recieves. It also allows you to plug headphones into it and stream the music from your music device you are using, I Phone works great! They are worth $100, to be wireless.

They're about 100usd, and they link to your phone via a very high quality version of bluetooth. You can then plug your headphones into it and it'll do a better job at decoding the audio files, then powering your headphones than almost anything else in the price bracket. the BTR5 is also powerful enough to drive over ear headphones like the Sennheiser HD600's if you decide that you are ready to try something a bit more demanding!.
