Drop Ctrl vs Royal Kludge RK61

After four weeks the cheap Halo-brand keys started flaking out. First the V key, then the R. They were so noisy people asked me to mute my zoom calls, and these aren't the colicky model. All of this was okay, because I had a set of MX Cherry Pink on the way, but I went to replace them and the Halos refuse to budge

I picked my Royal Kludge RK100 up for $80, it's usually $90 but there was a coupon that popped up on amazon. For $80, I couldn't be *too* upset about the lack of dissasembly options and the raised LEDs, but had I known that was the situation, I likely would have just gotten a Keychron K4 instead for a little bit more.

Other than the outrageously horrible examples I provided above the rest of the layout is all but standard and is simple to use.

I found that if I used the QMK firmware that is provided on GitHub and flashed that the problems I was experiencing disappeared. So, the online configurator that DROP provides delivers flawed firmware, which was causing the issues. Why they are behind an active open-source communities modifications baffles me. Although the software is powerful, QMK configurators can sometimes feel a little unintuitive to use. The best version I’ve come across is Via, which is the configurator that Keychron’s boards use. But Drop’s instructions are much less intuitive and point you towards its own configurator and its own software for customizing the Mythic Journey’s layout. One of the steps, which you’ll find on a separate GitHub page, involves literally running a terminal command to flash your new layout to your keyboard

4ghz receiver works fine for the price and latency is fine. Bluetooth and wired modes work fine. Really my biggest gripe is that the manual doesn't properly explain how the keyboard is laid out well, which is pretty essential on any board smaller than 65%, which is why I docked a star. Still recommend the board, but I really hope the manual and documentation can get an improvement in the future

Hey guys, I'm new to mechanical keyboards. I purchased around a year ago the Royal Kludge RK61 for a cheap price and I'm looking to replace it for a keyboard with better quality, the RK61 has quite the horrible layout for developers in my opinion and wobbly keycaps which are my main issues. I am a software developer so I'm mainly looking for a keyboard that is good for typing, don't really care about gaming, or RGB colors and stuff like that.

Save your money, it isn't worth a 1/4 of the price, I have had similar build keyboards for $50-80.

Personally, looking back I would recommend that people thinking about buying this spend a few more bucks and get one of the bigger names out there. I’m currently using a HyperX Alloy Origins wired keyboard and I love it. This keyboard is fine as a starter or something like that, but if you spend an extra 15-25 dollars you can get a (much) better quality keyboard that will likely last you for many years to come.
