Really hate that 13&quot; 1600 x 900 screen - it is just too small after 15.4&quot; on HP, and I also have to run fonts on 150%. Still taking my time to hook it up as my main rig through dock and dual monitors. Mostly using it now through Remote Desktop when I need Win 7 &#x2F; Visual Studio 2013

Ask HN: What's the hardware (read: laptop) that has lasted you the most?

The hp pavilion isn't a good buy, very outdated and underpowered. The Lenovo is much better, more modern and more powerful, and importantly has a decent sized SSD rather than hard drive, this will make the computer much faster just on its own, and you can always add a hard drive for more storage for very cheap(not sure about US prices bit could get a good sized one for £60 in the UK).

 

My son will be graduating from High School in May 2021.  He is interested in going to college to learn video editing (He is familiar with Adobe Premiere Pro) like a course offered at Full Sail in Orlando Florida.  He also likes to live stream while he is playing on his PC, XBox, or Nintendo Switch.

His current system is a DELL [Inspiron 3252 Specifications](https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_inspiron_desktop/inspiron-3252-small-desktop_reference%20guide_en-us.pdf) but because it is old and he has used it for the activities mentioned above and his school work it lags a lot.

Battery life will last you 8-10 hours which is amazing so you don't have to be near a socket every hour. Performance is amazing on this laptop. With its powerful processor, you will have no problem when web browsing, multi-tasking, and programming.

I only hit one real disappointment during my testing period, which was the speakers. The sound quality is not great, and the bass is particularly weak. There was some distortion that wasn’t a huge problem — I could only hear it if I was leaning close to the laptop — but also didn’t go away until the volume was below 50 percent. You can swap between audio presets in Bang & Olufsen’s audio control center for music, movies, and voice, but they didn’t make much of a difference

 The entire Ryzen 5000 line is fast.Having raved about the 1165G7-powered Spectre x360 14 not too long ago, I think the Aero was about on par with that machine in everyday use. It blew through my typical workload of around a dozen Chrome tabs with Slacking, Spotify streaming, and Zoom calls over top with no issues. The Enter key is SO soft and mushy and I've noticed many of the keys, like the pair of Space bars, are also soft and don't register contact multiple times. VERY frustrating as I can type around 50 wpm and I'm having to Backspace WAY too much! GRR!. I want to send this POS back and try another brand, but I've found no other alternatives in my searches.

 It might be marginally but use it for a couple hours and it's going to need a charge. I wouldn't recommend this for students. Having 2 classes in row will mean you're looking to sit near a plug in class to keep it charged. You can dim the screen down but that's not always possible when you're in a bright classroom

 My old model, with a card slot, I routinely swapped out cards depending on my usage. I was hoping the battery life was some improved. It might be marginally but use it for a couple hours and it's going to need a charge. I wouldn't recommend this for students

Good but with some disappointments.

We did not open the shrink wrap as there was no indication of a keyboard. Be aware of false depictions of keyboard included even in the video. Otherwise, the product should be ok if you want a tablet, not a PC.

Does not come with keyboard

 Any external wirless mouse would do EXCEPT the SurfacePro8 has two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports. :-{  However, I found the following USC-C docking station made especially for the SurfacePro8 that solved my USB (and other) interface issues: Surface Pro 8 Hub Docking Station with 4K HDMI, USB-C Thunerbolt 4 (Display+Data+PD Charging), USB 3.0, USB 2.0, TF Card Slot, Triple Display (Surface Pro 8+HDMI+USB C) for Microsoft Surface Pro 8  I ma now a happy SurfacePro8 user!! :-)
