Sennheiser HD 820 vs Sennheiser HD 600

All listening is done with my fully burned in OG 820 cable so that I don't have too much difference for my ears in the transition... (/s)

I’m not a headphone expert, though I have been using them in one form or another dating back to 1977, so a good 40 years on everything from the old Koss white eggshell looking things to Sony’s 1980s on the ear to noise canceling Sony and Bose phones. But for music (hi-fi) my AKGs had been my reference until they were damaged. But this review concerns some AKG K-712s that I purchased at the same time as the Sennheisers specifically to test. One question that should have arisen in your mind by now is, what exactly does the closed-back design add to the HD820s? I’ve been comparing their sound to open-back headphones because that’s what they sound like, though they’re technically different. Well, the HD820s do give you some of that promised sound isolation, but it’s not much. They’re really only semi-closed. Sound still leaks liberally out of them, and you won’t be able to indulge your audiophile hobby with your significant other sleeping in the same room

Also, as my first purchase of high end full headphones rather than IEM's, I did not consider the leather pads (not being replaceable, to my knowledge) and getting ear sweat with extended usage. I use the headphones for 8-12 hours a day as a heads-down programmer, these are my work pair.

I even played some games on them and I am more able to separate multiple footsteps in my environment than with any other headphone and doing it precisely. So now the price. I got this in Like New condition for 2k which is not bad. They came in just like the description said

Clearly the Grado's at $100 are the least expensive with the Momentum jumping up markedly to $299, while the more recently acquired Sennheiser HD600 hit the $400 mark. When a number of them are playing notes together the Grado's sounded smeared compared to the HD600s. Not unlike a poorly created JPEG from a digital point-n-shoot versus a well-made JPEG from an original RAW processed via Adobe Lightroom. Details are are lost in the former, but the latter does a far superior job of keeping the detail even in the process of losing information

So my conclusion is that if you are not using headset in noisy environment then HD800 would be better choice. Maybe HD820 suites office environment better.

I went around one day in Sydney and tested all the earphones I could find in 3 stores and was just stunned by the performance difference in the Sennheiser compared to the rest. It was a huge difference.
