Have the Asus ZenWiFi AX mesh in our 2000 sq.ft., 2-story house, and no problems with 2 iPhones and 2 iPad Pro's. They're always connected, and the reliablity and wireless coverage of the mesh is great

I've spent the last couple hours looking for a mid-tier mesh system for my home. My 10+ year old netgear router seem to have died (no longer powers on). This means no WiFi at home. In our current house, coverage has always been bad, because the router is in one corner or our home, which is basically a square footprint with rooms divided by interior walls, about 2000sqft of needed coverage. I have a CAT cable run to the living room, so I can do an access point or hardwired mesh node. 

Long story short, I starting looking at the Deco X60 kit, the Nest kit, and Eero kit, and basically all of them have recent reviews about how connections frequently drop for iOS devices. There's lots of reference to turning off 5ghz and turning off a Private Address setting on the iOS devices. Bottom line is that this seems like a pain in the ass, regardless of whether it is Apple's fault or an issue with new WiFi 6 hardware. 

I'm paying for half-gig service from my ISP, so would avoiding WiFi 6 and sticking with previous generation mesh kits be a decent option? 

My other option is to get into Ubiquiti. My brother has an ACPRO access point he can give me. So maybe I should get a UniFi Dream Machine and put the access point in the living room?

Looking for a mesh system, but they all seem to suffer from similar issues regarding iOS devices frequently disconnecting?

At the very bottom of the screen are the Home, Devices, Insight, Family, and Settings buttons. The Devices button opens a screen where you&rsquo;ll see a list of all of your network clients. Tap any client to view upload/download statistics, block internet access, and limit bandwidth availability for that client. Use the Insights button to search for available AIMesh nodes, share your Wi-Fi credentials, enable the remote Connection feature that lets you use the app when you are away from home, and view security information such as how many malicious sites were blocked and how many infected devices have been detected

 I tapped Setup on the opening screen, selected Asus ZenWiFi Series from the list, and the router was immediately recognized via Bluetooth. I tapped the router tab and connected the router to my modem using the included LAN cable. I power cycled my modem and followed the instructions to place the other node next to the router node and power it up. I tapped Next and then tapped Get Started, at which point I was prompted to create a new network SSID and password

 It delivered speedy throughput in our testing and comes with tough parental controls, anti-malware software, and a 2.5G LAN port.

Asus ZenWiFi AX (XT8) Review

ISP-provided router connects to the internet (Orange Livebox 5, if it matters). Asus Zenwifi mesh connects by ethernet to the ISP router and everything then connects via wifi or ethernet to this mesh. I haven't touched the default security settings on the Livebox (I assume none) and haven't messed with the Zenwifi either but I believe it has some basic default protections. I don't think I have a firewall enabled in the Livebox or the Zenwifi

 I have only 1 user on the NAS (strong password and 2FA enabled), all the other containers run with that user's PUID. I only configured one user in jellyfin too (strong, different password, no 2FA). I forwarded all the http ports for the above apps on my Livebox, as well as 5000/5001 for DSM. Going through Synology's DDNS, I have remote access to all containers and to DSM (and assorted apps - DS file etc

 I haven't touched the default security settings on the Livebox (I assume none) and haven't messed with the Zenwifi either but I believe it has some basic default protections. I don't think I have a firewall enabled in the Livebox or the Zenwifi.

I've finally got my NAS in a place I like, so now I'd like to patch up any security holes I left behind me while I was fiddling with everything. Not just vulnerabilities to malicious action but just accidents too. I'm looking for quick wins and low-hanging fruit, it's not like I'm likely to be targeted by (or, let's be honest, able to defend against) a determined hacker.

But if we apply those same points to the $450 Asus ZenWiFi AX, then we've found the sweet spot for a mesh router upgrade, with that same high-end performance at a price that's a lot easier to swallow. That makes the new ZenWiFi system my top-rated mesh router to date, an easy Editors' Choice Award winner, and the first system I'd recommend for anyone looking for a router worth splurging on

 But if we apply those same points to the $450 Asus ZenWiFi AX, then we've found the sweet spot for a mesh router upgrade, with that same high-end performance at a price that's a lot easier to swallow.  Some of them work fine 99% of the time, but 3 plugs and 4 bulbs are giving me issues still). These devices work fine in their mobile app and in the Google Home app, but not HomeKit. I've read this is an mDNS issue, but I don't know what else to try to improve the mDNS on my network.

 If the node needs to be that close what's the point in having the note at all?  If I could return this, I would. If you want a really robust router go away from home routers and find a commercial router.   Despite the semi-efficient family controls (things like domain or keyword blocking do help), the biggest issue we've had is the node losing its connection or it's full wifi strength regularly. On a regular basis we have to disconnect it and reconnect it to the main router. Oftentimes it requires that we remove it completely via the app, and re-add it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

 We keep the main router upstairs and the node downstairs.  We bought this $400 router because 3 video game playing kids, we wanted good family controls over wifi and MAC addresses. This is a decent router for that, but it doesn't stop the 13 yet old from masking his IP address and bypassing time blocks.  The app is good, but limited compared to the web interface, which has some inconsistencies itself

Returning this $600 garbage. Not sure how people deal with routers these days. Never had any trouble with Nest wifi. If only it was in 6ghz.

Excitement turned to disappointment! Not suited for WFH

I just implemented Asus ZenWifi XT8's for this reason - you don't have to use the cloud to manage them and they actually come with a lifetime license for Trend Micro AiProtection which is built-in (don't need an Internet connection to access and control it).

I've come close to buying a couple mesh systems, but reading their "Privacy Policy" has stopped me. They are asking the user to give them incredible amounts of information. Is there a system which doesn't require agreeing to give up one's privacy? Or can they be thwarted by something like Pi-Hole?

Mesh without giving up privacy ?

 Recently I’ve read on forums that this issue has plagued others as well. I feel this product has not lived of to the expectation of providing a reliable connection consistently. I have had another ASUS router from a few years ago and had a very consistent connection which prompted me to “upgrade” to these. Let’s say it’s been a big let down

 If you depend on a stable connection for work this is particularly frustrating and disappointing to say the least. I have had this router for many months now and have continued to update the firmware and app but the experience has not improved at all. Recently I’ve read on forums that this issue has plagued others as well. I feel this product has not lived of to the expectation of providing a reliable connection consistently
