 So while I don't feel like they're game changing in any way, and while I don't feel like they're anything super special, they're reasonably well-rounded and they're affordable. So with that in mind and with their faults in mind, I'm going to say I think that these are actually a relatively decent pair of headphones. I came into this rather skeptical. I had heard a few sets in the past and M50X was not a big fan of those

 So I mean, we'll get to that at some point. But along with build comes comfort. They were better than any of the Bose ones that I tried that costed way more than this. Honestly, you know, I like these more than the SHP 9500s, things like that

 And that's how, you know, it is locked and it's not going to pull out. So downside of that being that, you know, if you step on the cable and expect this to just pull right out of the headphone as a safety, that's probably not going to happen. You're probably going to end up like maybe damaging your cable, hopefully not damaging your headphones. That specific case, I feel like these wires are probably cheap to replace

 They were better than any of the Bose ones that I tried that costed way more than this. Honestly, you know, I like these more than the SHP 9500s, things like that. I think it would be a relatively difficult choice if you were trying to pick between these and the 598C, the closed version, just kind of based off what sound preference you like. The 598C is a more well-rounded headphone

Audio Technica M40X - Review

 Detail and soundstage are still present. All very good signs. Earpads still a little uncomfortable.  16-hour Impressions, Brainwavz Angled Pads: My opinion of these pads hasn't changed much since I first tried them

  Stock Earpads: These are the best isolating by far, but are the worst when it comes to comfort around the ears. They also have a warmer sound signature with a spike in the highs at the 10k frequency. This peak makes them sound "artificial" and "metallic" in some ways. Guides that I've found online outline ways to correct this peak, but it always results in the overall sound character being changed as well

 Equal amount of good things and bad things. Here's what I have to say about them.  Stock Earpads: These are the best isolating by far, but are the worst when it comes to comfort around the ears. They also have a warmer sound signature with a spike in the highs at the 10k frequency

  Shure HPAEC840 Earpads: I like these a lot less than I did at the start. Bass disappears, as does isolation, but the 10k peak is lowered by quite a bit as well. When I say isolation disappears, I mean that its getting really close to being like an open set of headphones. You want to turn the volume up more with these pads on, but because they are no longer warm, you're stuck with loud mids/highs

 What this results in is sound that is very accurate you're essentially hearing the track the way it was meant to be heard. Having all frequencies present creates clear instrument separation in all genres of music. The frequency response on the M40Xs goes all the way down from 15 hertz and up to 24 000 hertz providing a broad range across all frequencies. Highs are crisp and clear you can hear the finest nuances and details especially in vocals though when listening at higher volumes this can be a bit harsh and lead to some listening fatigue

 This all makes the headphones quite iconic and instantly recognizable. I quite like the design. To me they feel less like an elegant pair of headphones but more like a tool that is really built to last sturdy and meant for a professional environment. While the M40Xs feature a mostly plastic build to me they are well put together and feel sturdy in the hand

The headband also offers plenty of stretch making it great for both larger as well as people with smaller heads. Now along the sides of the headband you can extend and shorten this via a click mechanism and one thing I really like about the system is that it is quite stiff so that means that it won't be adjusting on its own when say taking it in and out of your bag or when taking it on and off your head

 That said as mentioned earlier the passive noise isolation is truly great and this definitely contributes to a better sense of immersion. When using the M40Xs for mixing sound in video editing I found them to be an absolute joy to work with. Knowing that these provide flat and neutral sound gives me reassurance when editing multiple audio elements in video and ensures me that the audio is balanced in the way that I want. Now I mentioned this in my previous Sony MDR7506 review and the same applies here

The biggest quality jump I´ve done before was when I bought AudioTechnica´s ATH M40x headphones, which I was stoked and shocked of how much I lost all those years listening to shitty quality music and movies. Just by getting studio headphones, everything changed. I even saw my dad almost cry when he heard a couple songs he liked in them, I was amazed.

I cried the first time I heard my new Studio Monitors. Haven´t been this much happy in a long time

 Nothing professional about it. Sound? The Bass is bloated. The Mids are hiding under a blanket. The highs are sibilant

 Buzzer Sound!!! Not even close. In comparison, the new M40x is a toy. Nothing professional about it. Sound? The Bass is bloated

 And lastly, the seal on your ears is pretty tight, so it does a pretty decent job at rejecting ambient noise around you in your room. Now, when it comes down to it, these are not going to replace my MDR7506s for mixing, but I will admit, these are a lot less straining on your ears just for casual listening over long periods of time. So in terms of pros, these do actually have a fairly neutral frequency response. They are relatively cheap for what you're getting

Overall I like them, but *to me* the M40X sound worse than my HD599. I don't really like the highs, they sound kinda noisy in a way compared to the HD599, I don't know how to explain it. Other than that tho, I think they sound fine and unlike the HD599, can even be used outside as they isolate well enough. Not amazingly, but certainly better than any open back

I got a pair of ATH-M40X recently.

  Overall, I give these a 3 out of 5. Sound is 3.5. The annoying way the earpieces fold and twist, and sometimes how difficult and annoying it can be to get both in the correct position to put on your head, well I give that a 2

 They aren't the worst, but they are no where as clear as people claim. These are fairly bass-heavy, if that's important too you, but the bass isn't as clear and defined as I would expect.  Sound separation isn't that great. I also find the highs to be fairly piercing, yet not musical at all

  I pulled them out again to give them a listen, but I still am not impressed in the least. Unlike most people, I find these headphones to be fairly muddy. They aren't the worst, but they are no where as clear as people claim. These are fairly bass-heavy, if that's important too you, but the bass isn't as clear and defined as I would expect

  I put the headphones on and wasn't impressed, but new they had to be burned in (yes, burn-in is a very real thing and varies between headphone models). So I burned them in, and sound improved quite a bit, but I still wasn't impressed and would only use the headphones occasionally.  I pulled them out again to give them a listen, but I still am not impressed in the least. Unlike most people, I find these headphones to be fairly muddy

 There is a layer of padding on the inside that's not quite as deep as the M50X, but it's okay considering this headphone's weight. The headband has quite a lot of adjustability available to it and it has a metal reinforced adjuster with markings to indicate how far it's been adjusted. And it does have a ratchet mechanism, which is good. It also has a fair amount of stretch to it, so it should be able to fit fairly large heads quite easily

 An M40X with a pair of Brainwave HM5 pads is a very, very comfortable headphone with a fun sound signature. And if you're looking for a very portable headphone with a fun sound signature that is very comfortable, then the Audio Technica ATH M40X with the HM5 pads is a really, really good choice. So there we are then. I'm sure this opinion might be a bit controversial to some people, but go on and leave your opinions down in the comments section below

 But again, if you're going to go out and buy cowhide or sheepskin angled leather pads or whatever, and then stick them on your cheap headphone and expecting to make a great headphone, that's literally like sewing a cowhide purse on a sow's ear. It just makes no sense. Now granted, if you do put these on the M40X, they do make them more tolerable to use and they do have a fairly fun sound signature. They're a long way from being considered flat or neutral, but it can be enjoyable at least

 And that is what monitoring headphones are designed for after all. However, for casual listeners, you're probably going to find that you need to stretch this out over a box or something because they're just not that comfortable out of the box. And that really leads me straight onto the ear pads because these are out of the box actually quite reasonably padded. But from experience, I know that these ear pads do wear down fairly quickly
