 We can get really good deals on group buys of various tech items like keyboards, headphones, speakers, all that type of stuff, and the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7s were actually on Massdrop before, so use the link in the description to go make a free account and check it out for yourself. If Audio-Technica is known for one product in particular, it's the ATH-M50s. They offer very good sound quality for an affordable price, and over the years there's been some improvements and even a newer model, the M50X is released, but the headphones are still fundamentally the same. While the sound quality on the M50s is still incredible, they just lack that premium feel you're looking for in a pair of headphones of that caliber

 The headphones band is constructed out of a sturdy metal with just the right amount of flex, so there's no noticeable wobble or looseness that would have taken away from the premium feel. The earcups in these do not fold in like the ATH-M50s do for portability, but they do lay flat allowing them to sit down on a table easier or be stowed in a bag. I also really like the color combination of the MSR7s. I think it looks really classy and premium

 The last issue I have in terms of comfort is one that I have with almost every pair of closed back headphones. When I wear closed back headphones like these for over an hour, heat accumulates within the earcups and since there's nowhere for that heat to go, it gets very uncomfortable. Yes, I can just take them off for a few minutes and let my ears cool down, but when I'm wearing them for a long period of time, that's just a little bit of an inconvenience. But that about wraps up my review of the MSR7s

The ATH-MSR7 may just be that headphone. Priced at $250 (£199, AU $349) and available in a few different color options, it features rich, highly detailed sound, is well-built, should fit most people comfortably and comes with three cables, including one that has an inline remote/microphone for cell-phone use.      The ATH-MSR7 comes in black and a few other colors. The string orchestration that sounded so lush and opulent over the ATH-MSR7 was less so on the ATH- M50x. That MX50x is less clear yet more forgiving of harsh-sounding recordings. So what we're saying here is the ATH-MSR7 will delight audiophiles seeking oodles of detail and don't crave added fullness and warmth.It's worth noting that we did the the bulk of our listening with an iPod Classic,  Sony Walkman NWZ-A17  and iPhone 5S, but the ATH-MSR7 sounded even sweeter and richer, with no loss of detail when we switched over to a  FiiO X5 ($349) music player

The best recordings benefit from the ATH-MSR7's vivid character, so with bluesman Doug MacLeod's new "Exactly Like This" album sounded utterly live and the ATH-MSR7 could do no wrong. After we listened for a half an hour we started to feel that the ATH-MSR7's earpads' pressure was a little too high. As we said, it's not as comfortable a headphone as Sony's MDR-1R, which has softer, more laid-back highs and fuller lows.The ATH-MSR7 has more energy and livelier dynamics, and it projected wider, more outside-the-head stereo imaging

 The ATH-MSR7 also had the clearest, best defined, but definitely not over emphasized bass of the three headphones.Last but not least, we were curious to see how the ATH-MSR7 compared with company's popular ATH-M50x headphones while listening to Beck's "Morning Phase" album.The string orchestration that sounded so lush and opulent over the ATH-MSR7 was less so on the ATH- M50x. Audio Technica ATH-MSR7 review: The lowest-priced (true) high-resolution headphone

Full disclosure: I expect a lot from headphones. As a kid, my family didn't share my affinity for classical music and film scores, so I got used to listening with headphones–first my Dad's Soundesigns, then eventually my own brand new Koss Pro4x. In the 32 years since, headphones have remained my preferred way to listen to music when I'm not socializing. I've simply grown to love the detail and intimacy headphones provide, which I've not experienced with speakers and amps costing tens of thousands of dollars

 The Marshall Monitors and Denon AH-D600 have similar sound signatures, but with its filter in place, the Marshall headphones lack shimmer and with the filter out, it's sibilance run amok with all but the dullest recordings. Meanwhile, the Denons have a bit stronger (but less defined) bass and oddly synthetic-sounding treble. I only mention them as possible references. I don't recommend either over the MSR7 which, even with its shortcomings, is both sonically superior and a better value

 I love the sound, and have managed to set the EQ on my Astell & Kern AK100II to yield virtually the same sound, so I can enjoy it on the road, if need be.  But it's rare when I take the PM-1 out of the house, despite being easily driven by portable devices–its open-back design simply isn't practical for noisy environments or hushed ones where others might not want to hear my music. So, I've been searching the past two years, fairly intensively, for the right closed back portable headphones. Many have been tried and rejected, more often than not because of poor build quality (creaking and microphonics drive me nuts, especially in expensive cans made with luxury materials, such as the B&W P7!) or unbalanced sound

  Compared with a warmish source, like my AK100II, the MSR7s sounded lovely, almost a match for the sound of my PM-1 on the Onkyo receiver. Too bad about the poor fit and compromised build quality.

 In the end, the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 is a great headphone. It's not quite as comfortable as some competing Sony models like the MDR-1A, which is a little bit more laid back sounding and forgiving headphone, but if you are listening to well recorded tracks, it will certainly bring out the best in them. Now, I can tell you that until now we haven't tested a so-called high resolution headphone in this price range that can truly reproduce high res audio, but to its credit this Audio-Technica can, which is why we're calling it the most affordable high res headphone out there. There's a lot of energy and life to its sound, along with lots of clarity of course, so you feel a strong connection to the music

Audio Technica ATH-MSR7: The lowest priced high-resolution headphone

Been into headphones for a few years, previously had speaker set up, having kids changed that! Love my range of cans from the Audio Technica Ath msr7’s for portable use, Senny hd600’s for amazing neutrality, Grado sr325e for a very different (but brilliant) take on sound and my favourites the Hifiman Sundara which take my breath away every time I hear them!.

I have just put a post up with my electronics (sorry dont know how to link yet) i use a Rupert Neve RNHP amp which i think is incredible for the money, ive not tried the grados with a valve amp but they definitely need a smooth amp due to their forward sound. I dont think you can go wrong with the Prestige series ive heard the reference and wasnt keen.

I think buying a bunch of headphones is dumb, me included.  It's a fools market and thats why headphone companies make all these headphones because the person looking to buy will never  be happy because of the belief tbere is something better out there.  It allways is amusing when i read a reddit user who has $1000 + headphones but will in time want to buy again something expensive in the hope of finding a endgame headphone. Its like searching for a leprechaun's pot of gold, does not exist.  Recently i stop myself from buying any more headphones after i bough the Sennheiser hd 280. I have Sony, Beyerdamics, Akg, Audio tecknica, HiFi Man.  Headphones that allways lacking either in sound or comfort.  The Sennheiser hd 280 surprised me the sound and comfort are superb . For $100 this headphone makes my movies and music sound better then any other headphone i have .This has a bass quality that i love and have not experienced before. Hard for me to explain but it is such a nice exclamation mark to the music.

 Listening to Dirty Loops i found the bass to be clear but the synth, keys and other sounds were shrill to the point of not being able to listen to more than one track.  I am returning these to find another option because although they give clarity, are comfortable to wear, look cool and have a nice over the ear experience (decent sound isolation with a breathable design), they are too bright for my listening preferences.  If you want clarity and are fine with some brightness, these are for you. If you like warmth or want really strong bass, you would do well to look elsewhere

  These headphones have tons of clarity. If you are looking to hear detail in your recordings these will give you that. There is so much detail that they will reveal issues in streaming quality and recording flaws. In this regard these meet the expectation of "high res" as described

Notes: Headphone reviews are highly subjective. I greatly favor having a warm sound. CNET's Review is a good place to start for an idea of what these headphones offer.  I am fan of many types of music and also a warm sound

 I purchased these headphones because I wanted to find a more enveloping and "high end" listening experience beyond my Koss Porta Pro headphones (which are a much loved base point for pretty much all of my music listening). Beyond CNET's review of these headphones, I wanted to share my experience from the desire to find a higher end experience.  These headphones have tons of clarity. If you are looking to hear detail in your recordings these will give you that

Give a lot of clarity. Not for listeners who favor a warm sound.

I can wear them all day and neither my head, where they rest, or specially my ears, will hurt. These are a wonderful pair of headphones on this regard.

 I've used five year old $30 Sennheisers that have survived daily bus rides at the bottom of a kid's over-stuffed backpack that sound as if they enjoy greater structural integrity.  I'd like to believe these are atypical of this model's build quality, but the fact that the non-noise-cancelling ATH-MSR7s I tried last year were almost as rickety after a few days of use. I don't know what Audio-Technical was thinking when they engineered these, but you have been informed.

If all you care about is sound quality, you like near-analytical sound and have a fondness for listening directly from portable devices, these may be the headphones for you. I've owned or tried almost every option between $200 and $700, and good luck finding a closed back can in that range that sounds this great straight from portable devices. And because its response curve is devoid of oddball peaks and dips, it's responsive to EQ, so you can pretty much make it sound how you like. The noise cancelling works well to minimize steady state environmental noise, but isn't as effective as any Bose I've tried or the Sennheiser Momentum 2

Sounds greater than $300; feels more like $50.
