Audio Technica has a rock-solid reputation in the world of headphones, in more recent years their ATH-M50Xs have become one of the most beloved and recommended headphones across the entire internet, the success of which has led to the vast popularity of the entire AT series. Audio Technica’s flagship open-back reference pair, the ATH R70X, caught my attention while on the hunt for some high-end cans that offered a flat signal for editing voiceover tracks, while simultaneously offering a premium audiophile-grade listening experience. So, how do the R70Xs compare to the ever popular M50Xs, and are these reference headphones worth their steep price tag of $350? Allow me to explain.
 The R70Xs are a premium experience through and through. The patented “3d wing support system” means the headband never needs adjusting and simply slips onto your head. Your milage may vary with fit but the pair fits comfortably on my head. This headband, paired with the unit’s extremely light weight lead to the single most comfortable listening experience I’ve had with any headphones. In a sense, it almost doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything. The earcups are made of a pleasantly soft fabric, and fit snugly around the ears but never felt too tight. Compared to the M50Xs, these are far more comfortable and never leave me with any sense of ear fatigue like I experience with most other headphones. For long hours of editing, or listening to Tidal, this a huge plus. The dual-sided detachable locking cable which is L/R signal independent is meant to ensure proper stereo orientation, something I’ve failed ever to notice lacking in any headphones. That said, a detaching cable is appreciated, in the event you snap your cable like I have before with some past headphones. While I wouldn’t wear these walking around in public due to their size, I am a fan of their design and think they provide a very sleek, industrial look.
 When it comes to actually powering these headphones, you’ll want to use something a little more powerful than your phone for the optimal experience. The headphones impedance level of 470 ohms means you’ll need a rather powerful output to get the most out of these. My Audient ID44 effortlessly drives the R70Xs with plenty of headroom. However, when used with my iPhone SE I was still able to listen but only when set to the highest volume. If you’re in the market for these headphones, do yourself a favor and purchase some kind of headphone amp or audio interface to get the most out of them and to truly utlize their full potential.

The nearly completely flat frequency of the R70X means that you will hear everything exactly as it was recorded, imperfections and all.
 Using these with Tidal or the hifi tracks downloaded on my computer has proved an absolute treat and has provided the most detailed, powerful listening experience I have had the privilege of enjoying. The fairly flat frequency may not be to everyone’s taste, but in my view offers a stellar, invigorating experience unmatched by any other headphones I’ve used. I tried these with my usual playlist of Indie Folk, but also saw how they performed with hip-hop, classical, and Latin. I found the way these headphones reproduce acoustic guitar chillingly accurate, but ultimately they perform exceedingly well with all genres. Closing your eyes and listening to a favorite song with these headphones is nothing short of breathtaking.

These are a very bass boosted pair of headphones that sound good enough to replace my IEM’s when on the go. They get uncomfortable after an hour though, so these are only recommended to wear on short bursts.

 Just make sure you have a good headphone amp behind it, and make sure you get a well put-together set.  The only reason I've only bumped up my review by one star is because of the obvious issue of quality control and the lack of a second short cable and case. As a company, if you're going to manufacture a "super light" set of quality headphones, you should expect that editors, musicians, producers or audiophiles would travel with them. And without a case or 1

And without a case or 1.5m cable, I would NOT trust the durability of these nor would I want to fumble around, with a 3 meter cable, during travel. If the rest of the industry is anything to take note from, the addition of a shorter cable or case would not have cost much extra, especially since AT saved so much on manufacturing and materials

 Now, that still hasn't changed. The sound is truly awesome. These headphones are also super light, and very comfortable for short spurts, even if the cups don't fit my massive ears.  Something I am confused about is the cushioning on the ear cups

 The controversial Audio-Technica wing system with a foam padding on this that is very very soft but it feels pretty well put together all in all despite it's really light weight. Now in terms of comfort, it is decently comfortable but it's going to depend on your head shape. The reason for that is the cups don't lack any, what is this, tilt, yeah no tilt access so they don't do any of this, it just goes out. So you kind of have to hope that your head makes these things or the cups sit straight because otherwise they are going to kind of sit on like a little bit of an angle

 So the ATH-R70X in terms of build feels pretty well built overall, it is incredibly light, it weighs almost nothing. The top headband kind of looks like a hose clamp, it has like that same kind of hole cut out and look as like a hose clamp, it is using metal grills on both sides, plastic on the side of the cups, kind of like a soft micro suede pad. The controversial Audio-Technica wing system with a foam padding on this that is very very soft but it feels pretty well put together all in all despite it's really light weight. Now in terms of comfort, it is decently comfortable but it's going to depend on your head shape

 So it has some things going for it but it has a few weird things that I don't particularly like about it. And as I mentioned before, it's two closest competitors being the 6XX and the Sundara. Compared to the 6XX, I think it has even more forward of a mid-range than the 6XX does. It's brighter than the 6XX, it has better bass extension but it sounds a little bit thin to me and slightly shrill

 Okay so now moving into the sound of the ATH-R70X. So starting off with frequency response, the ATH-R70X has a surprisingly flat lower midrange and bass region. It extends pretty well, it seems to start rolling off around 40 or 50 hertz or so, it only rolls off I'd say maybe 5 dB by the time you hit 20 hertz but either than that you're lower mids is pretty much flat, almost like a planar, it's actually kind of surprising. After that your midrange is surprisingly forward, it is a shouty, shouty headphone, that like 2 to 3k region is forward a couple dB to my ear and it's almost a little bit annoyingly shouty

When I went to Sydney for uni I found a few audiophile shops here and decided to visit them. The Dunu sa6 was from Addicted to Audio in Newtown and the fit was amazing for my ears and the sound quality really wowed me so I bought one. I also went to Minidisc in chatswood and they had a sale for the Audio Technica r70x and tried it, paired with the ifi hip dac I got wowed again (especially with the xbass button it's so fun to use) and bought one.

 When positioned on my head, I almost felt like my ear was touching the inner plastic, rather than having the cups bracing them in a good listening position. Even if I did not have the Sennheisers in hand, I would have felt this was mediocre build quality -- but in contrast with the Sennheiser it is night and day. The Sennheiser 650 are fully adjustable, with plush, dense supportive ear pads that really grab your ears comfortably but firmly. The over-the-head portion has much more ample padding of dense foam

 But after listening to a few different reference tracks that I rely on (mostly listening to pop and rock, not classical or jazz), I came to the conclusion that this perceived "detail" is more likely the result of what they *lack* rather than what they *have*. The ATH-R70X seems to be lacking midrange. It's got more of a scooped response. Therefore, I was imagining that I heard more detail in the high-end, because it was standing out more

 Decided to try out both of them, since the reviews seemed to indicate pros and cons to both.  Having them in hand, I really cannot say that there's much of a competition -- the Sennheisers are far superior, and I'll break down why I felt that way:  Build/Material Quality & Comfort The ATH-R70X are not nearly what I would expect for $350. They are very lightweight, which is a good thing, but part of the reason they are very lightweight is that the material quality is not fantastic. They have a very thin metal perforated frame that joins the two cans, and then there's an inner flexible frame with foam padding that supports them on your head

Comfort: 3/10 This unfortunately is where my raving review ends for these headphones. They are so uncomfortable

 I listen to a lot of video game soundtracks and one of my go to tracks to test imaging is Can You Feel the Sunshine off of the Sonic R soundtrack. The sensation of hearing the arpeggiated synth moving back and forth across the soundstage was absolutely mind blowing. Lastly, the soundtage. The soundstage is moderately wide (from my points of reference)

The cable is dual-sided, so each end of the Y-cable can be plugged into either the right or left channel, which is neat. The sound signature is very neutral with a touch of warmth, and I think the ATH-R70X maybe even surpasses my Sennheiser HD650/H6XX for critical listening and music enjoyment. Male and female vocals are lovely, and I find the neutral, natural presentation works for many different genres of music in my collection. The soundstage I think is wider than the HD650/HD6XX. I prefer the sound signature of the ATH-R70X's to other audiophile-grade headphones that can veer on the side of too bright or harsh for the sake of extra perceived clarity (looking at you Beyerdynamic, piercing treble ugh). These are possibly the best audiophile-grade headphones Audio Technica has ever made based on measurements and reviews.
