SC48 is like that friend you haven’t seen in years and then you remember why.

Is there really any console better than a used sc48 in the 5k range?

I own an SC48 that I bought on the lower-spectrum of cost that I’m trying to resell. Like others have said, it’s coming up on its EOL and parts are going to be difficult to come by after a while. The SQ series is great, but it’s more of an entry level mixer compared to the 48–nonetheless, it’s very capable.

Got an opportunity to buy and SC48 in amazing condition.  I'll need to get a road case and remote IO cause I'm over that copper snake life!  I spent years on the console and love it. Just checking in to see if you guys think it's a good move or just the nostalgia getting the best of me!  I still see it out on shows so seems like it has some life left?

Too late to buy an SC48?

Long story short here. I'm the house engineer for a popular music venue and we have new ownership and are working towards building an in house PA for our outdoor stage which has a cap of 1000 people. Had a production meeting the other day and was essentially told "just tell me what you want and we'll get it" in regards to the FOH and Mon consoles.

Now that doesn't mean there is no budget, ideally less than 30k, probably going to pick up something used. I want it to be as rider friendly as possible. The two consoles I see preferred the most on our riders are an SC48, and CL 5, personally I like the CL 5 a little more. Midas pro2 is another option I'm looking at.

So what I'm asking is what house consoles do other engineers like to see when they walk in?  What consoles make you cringe when you have to work on one?

Recommendations for a new house console

TL:DR - Looking for sub $5,000 (including stage boxes) mixer recommendations for musical theatre.


I’m looking for two new mixers to fit into existing systems. These would be used almost exclusively for musical theatre. One 450 seat theatre and one 110 seat theatre (separate systems, I need a mixer for each). Both use up to 28 wireless mics (receivers located beside the board) and up to 20ish band mics (connected in a separate pit/room in both theatres). We have a very limited budget and $5,000 (for each space) is probably the max, but not necessarily a hard cap. I was looking at the getting an A&amp;H SQ-5 for each space. I’ve never used those before, but they seem very flexible and I LOVE the fact that you can customize the layout of faders throughout the levels. My biggest questions/concerns are:

1. How does the SQ-5 compare with an X32? Is it worth the extra $1,000? Is the X32 getting too old to justify buying now, assuming I want it to last at least 5-10 years? I'm not concerned with number of faders so much as sound quality, connectivity, and longevity.

2. How is the scene management on the SQ? In general, I need the ability to create as many scenes as possible (definitely over 100, and ideally closer to 500) and advance through them with just the touch of a dedicated button. Scenes would mostly change mic and FX levels and (if possible) layout changes for the faders. It looks like the SQ can do that by using a soft key to advance through scenes. Am I wrong that this would work more smoothly with the SQ than the X32?

3. Dante. I know very little about it, but I am wondering if it’s a world I should buy into. It does look like amazing flexibility, but I don’t know that it would save us much money so far, since we would have to buy several stage boxes no matter which direction we go. However, our video staff is also interested in Dante, so it might be a good world for us to collab on. I see that the X32 Dante cards are out of stock and apparently have no estimated restock date, so should that be a dealbreaker? Also, if using Dante, what are some relatively cheap stage boxes that fit into that network? Could I save money by getting different stage boxes than the A&amp;H ones, but using it with an SQ-5?

4. Are there other mixers in the sub $4,000 range that I should look for? I think 48 channels is plenty, and 32 would definitely be the bare minimum. Even though we can’t afford it yet, I do like the idea of buying into an IEM system in the future, and both Behringer and AH seem to have decent options for that. Also, as much as this messes with recommendations, all needed stage boxes would be included in the $4,000. There is a 20x8 snake in the smaller space that is great, but I’d still need a box at the board itself, assuming it has less than 28 inputs/preamps in the board itself. The bigger theatre is about the same. We have a permanent snake running to the pit, but it’s 24x2, so very limiting for monitors.
